Jace: page 37

"It's about time, I sent them a letter weeks ago," Filnjar said. "That Elgrim... he'd forget his own pants if his wife didn't help him dress. But sorry, it's no use right now. I hate seeing a good mine go to waste like that, you know?"

Jace did not at all know. "What's wrong with the mine?"

"It's full of spiders, that's what's wrong with it! Almost killed Grogmar and me when they showed up. I'm worried that they'll come out of the mine looking for food soon. Then we're in even bigger trouble."

Vorstag stepped forward and made the offer to help. Jace checked her belt vials and quiver as they walked to the mine's entrance. A Rift Hold guard stood there in the shade, presumably ready to scream if the spiders emerged, or to fight if they turned out to be the mounts of the dreaded 'enemy soldiers.' Filnjar had not put much confidence in the local guards.

"This won't take long," Vorstag told her.

"I know, but wait a minute, Vors, this is my job. You're supposed to wait out here with the dog."

"No, it's mine." He snorted and gestured with his shoulder. "Ha, get it, 'mine.' I'm not going to argue, Jace."

Jacelyn's hands went to her hips. "Well, I am!"

Vorstag's words came out in a flood. "Listen, I like this life we have together. I don't want to change it. That means I can't want to keep you safe all of the time, and sometimes like yesterday at the fort I have to trust that you're watching out for me. And I know you're not someone who wants to be kept in a silk-lined box. But sometimes, like now, I can keep you safe. I can go in there and kill the spiders, and know that you're out here in no danger at all."

The guard pointed at the ridge above them. "There's a dragon roosting right—"

"Vors, I hear what you're saying," Jace interrupted. "But in this case I'm the better choice for the job. You are going to fight them up close with their," she wiggled her fingers in front of her mouth, "gross pointy mouth things and their venom, but I'm just going to shoot—"

"What about the jumping? They can jump as high as a mammoth and tear you to shreds. Jace, you're fragile. You—"

"Fragile?" Jace's voice rose. "Fragile?! Last night you nearly pounded me through the wall, and now I'm fragile?"

The guard cleared his throat. "There's a foul presence coming from Darklight Tower, south of the city," he said to the trees. "Some say the place is home to necromancers."

"That was a bad example," Jace admitted. "Please keep doing that."

Vorstag 's face underwent some contortions, but his tone stayed even. "I mean you've got your spell, but no real armor." He moved her hair aside and stroked a thumb over the still-tender scar on her neck. "You didn't have your spell on when this happened. This can't happen again."

Jacelyn looked into Vorstag's eyes. The love and concern there made her complaints seemed childish. "Let's go back to the smithy and see if Filnjar has something I can wear. I don't know how we'll pay for it, things have gotten expensive with all of the war and such. I'll think of something."

"That armor you bought to give me. Your thoughtfulness and generosity honor me. But Jace, I don't need it. Trade it to get some protection for yourself."

When Jace opened her mouth to argue, Vorstag covered it with his. By the time he let go she had forgotten her objection.

Filnjar had some pieces nearly identical to the armor Jace had bought for Vorstag. He spent the morning fitting them to Jace. Then they spent several hours getting her used to wearing it. When Vorstag was satisfied with the result, they approached the mine again. Vigilance waited obediently at the stable, but Dammit pranced along at Jace's side.

"Keep the dog with you at the entrance," Jace told Vorstag. "Put your hands around his jaws if you must, but keep him quiet. If what they said about the mine is right, you'll be able to hear me from all the way at the bottom."

Vorstag gave her a nod. They entered the mine.

Red mist filled the place. It must not be flammable, Jace thought. Their oil lamps are still lit. Filnjar said he and Grogmar left in a hurry. After a moment she could see horrifying giant spider shapes moving in the near-darkness. She silently cast her armor and muffle spells, then moved into position for the first shot.

Seven arrows for seven spiders. Jace reached the bottom and called up to Vorstag, "All clear!" She glanced around while he walked down to join her, Dammit growling at the spider carcasses as they passed.

Nothing down here but rocks and some personal items, Jace decided. I'm not going to steal from a bunch of miners. She flipped open a haversack and glanced inside. Unless they have some really good wine.

"Not for all the gold in Skyrim would I spend my life working in these tunnels," Vorstag declared. He handed Jace her sticky spider arrows. "You were right. You were the best one for this job."

Jace brushed the front of his greaves with her palm when she passed on her way back up the ramp. "Do you want to spend another night at The Tapped Vein, or should we ride hard for Riften? We might make it by moonrise." She put a little extra wiggle in her walk with Vors behind her, though she doubted he could see her dark leather-clad backside in the misty mine.

A smack on her rear followed by a squeeze proved her wrong. "Let's get paid and spend it all on mead and wine," he said. "We can drink it in that soaking tub."

"And this time I'll stay awake," laughed Jace.

I liked the back and forth with the guard interjecting, lol. Is that most added by the mod, too?

Maybe they're just looking for LIVING Imperials. Kirsla just fought a few undead Imperials there last night...

Oh I loved this one, as it was so full of goodness. The argument (hands on hips of course) about the mine is mine. That the argument both turned a bit bawdy and that it involved the guard. Jace's reaction to being called fragile. Even the movie reference to 7 arrows for 7 spiders!

Woot new armor for her!

Acadian, thank you so much! Hands on hips, the universal body talk for "You are not the boss of me." :D

Caught up!
Don't leave me without my next Jace fix too long hon ;)

Loved the whole mine sequence and exchange. The thief becomes the warrior ha ha. I see your modded mine really does have red mist in it....a strange ommission from vanilla.

Love Jace as always :)

I'm baaaack! But very busy until next week (plus Hurricane Matthew, ugh), so I will not be caught up for a while yet.

Rick, thanks! I think the unofficial patch restores the red mist, and I'm sure it's the unofficial patch that replaces the mine's ebony ore veins with iron. It also fixes the problem of re-spawning spiders. The transition from stealth archer to combat archer has been a bit scary. Vorstag is taking it seriously, ha ha.

My daughter's in northeast GA - but apparently out of the track (lots of wind and rain most likely), and I have a couple of acquaintances in Orlando and Tampa - the one in Orlando's evac'ing as I type.

Welcome back, and be safe!
