Siara Part Two; 14: Andur didn’t ask me why I wanted to be home. Perhaps - he thought it had to do with me being pregnant. Or perhaps.... he just understood. I needed to think over the rest of this. I had the bits of Dagon’s horrible weapon. There was a man waiting for them. And I just - couldn’t believe - he wanted to put them in a case in his museum.... I suppose you could say that “skeptic” is my middle name.... Whichever guard it was sent up the yell. I really wished they wouldn’t do that! But - by now I knew I couldn’t change it. I expected - eh well, hoped - they would be quieter if they didn’t know who was approaching. The problem seemed to be that most of these folk didn’t understand what had happened in Hammerfell. So they acted as if this was a holiday. Well, it was anything but.... Andur took the horses off and Deni almost knocked me down. “Here now - a little calm if you please!” She looked up at me, the strangest smile on her face. “You’re going to have a baby! I’ll have a sister or brother.” And before I could say a word, her expression changed. “Um. Mama. I - uh - brought a girl home from Whiterun....” She what? I must have been gone from home too long.... Edited by Serethil, Sep 26 2016, 08:16 PM.

Okay, having power "issues" tonight - Niels Fugel is down the road doing something (which should NOT involve power....) and every few minutes the power blips. So.... I'm not writing tonight because at this point I'm not sure I could actually save often enough not to lose stuff.... |

Siara Part Two; 15: Lucia was very quiet. She seemed.... distant, as if she were terrified by life. And how could she not be by this time? Perhaps.... she thought she might be turned out again.... My heart hurt at that thought. “Well, I welcome you to the family, Lucia. I’m sure the rest have too. From what Deni and Selalla say, you will fit right in. I am very glad you were with them when the bandits attacked!” She smiled a small tight smile, and Deni jumped up, saying “We have to go help Velima with day-meal, Mama. Come on Luce - it won’t take long with both of us to help! And then, we can go and have Arnem show you a bit about the horses.” I reached out and gave Lucia a hug - one she didn’t seem to know what to do with - or about. Poor child.... And as she left, Paranna entered. “Siara. Just the woman I need to talk to!” Oh gods. “Uh. Is Deni....” “Oh no no! Deni is a wonder. It’s hard to believe she was abandoned so young by her mother....” She settled herself onto the bench near me. “I - want to talk to you - about Lucia.” Hmm. “Is it - one mouth too many? Or what then?” “No. Not at all. I cannot have children. My first pregnancy ruined my body - and that child died stillborn. We - have always wished for children, but....” Ah. “Paranna - what does Termoru think about this?” “Eh, he’s for it. He knows I’ve wanted a child forever - and he wants someone to teach as well.” “A girl though.... and one who’s - Nord.....” “He - doesn’t have that ‘race-blindness’ thing. Not at all. And - that’s one of the things which made me love him. Most everyone’s forgotten by now.... but my birth-mother was Imperial. Not Redguard. I got Da’s looks, and that made me fit in better....” Siara was well taken-aback. Paranna’s Imperial mother had left almost nothing of her gens imprinted on her daughter... “Well, then. If Lucia is willing.... I think all will be. Andur and I would of course keep her - since Deni ‘adopted’ her. But.... I’m thinking.... her own family - without so many others....” “Aye! That was what we thought. She.... needs..... us - and... “We need her. We will love her. And we hope - she will love us.” |

[[Attention! This is not "lore" period....]] Siara Part Two; 16: I was moody and distracted. Paranna and Termoru had gone to Selalla with the news that Lucia would become their daughter. This was all to the good. So there would be a full ceremonial birthing on the morrow. But after that - we had to return to Dawnstar. And I still hadn’t.... oh. Hmmmm. Now, would that work.... it might.... I needed to think on it some. And I had to decide - before telling Andur. So, I set to work with the rest of the women to put together a young feast for the birthing. I suppose that sounds odd. Obviously Paranna and Termoru would not be actually birthing Lucia. But this particular sort of adoption was seen that way (unlike when Deni and I chose each other). Though in the essence, Lucia would be “birthed”- as the daughter (a very valued one) of Paranna and her mate. So this ceremony would have different elements; and even I would not have seen it performed this way since Andur’s clan was not mine. I did whatever needed doing, keeping busy enough that my mind settled into a sort of calm. I embraced it - calm just now was a VERY good thing. There were so many changes - to my body, my life - and my quest.... Right now, just following directions was the best thing for me. And since many of the directions were a bit unusual to me, I didn’t have time to let the angst in my emotions free. That too was a good thing. The ceremony started the next morning at dawn. The women began a strange ululation - a not-song that was so compelling everyone assembled as quickly as possible. They stood - the matriarch Selalla with the rest of the women ranged round her in a semi-circle - and Paranna in the birth-posture before them. I - was almost appalled that her features showed the pain of birthing.... Soon she began to pant. And then Termoru entered the space, knelt behind her, and supported her against his chest. This - was - eerily like a true birthing.... A while more of chanting and hard panting.... and Lucia was led into the small area beside her mother and father. A scream of triumph from Paranna, and Termoru’s muttered words.... Then Selalla put both hands on Lucia’s shoulders and intoned “Paranna has birthed the child Lucia. Termoru is her father. Do all of you of our clan accept this as a true birth?” Everyone assented verbally - I thought that non-verbal wasn’t probably protocol. And then the three were wrapped into a knot, holding each other - crying and laughing. The feast was anti-climactic. I was.... so tired I could hardly put two thoughts together and make sense with them. Andur finally scooped me up and took me to bed. Edited by Serethil, Sep 30 2016, 09:05 PM.

Doesn't have to be lore friendly, it's your story, and that of a birth, of a child or a new life, fits anywhere. :hugs: |

Poor Siara she must be emotionally exhausted....sound to me like she had better be careful or itll be nervous breakdown time...poor cow :( The birthing sequence...it sounds awful...because it's alien....not what we do for a normal adoption, but this is an alien culture! I have heard of sects IRL...religeous I think....who do a re-birthing...forcing the subject to fight their way out of a sack held closed and squeezed womb like by the gathered attendees....didn't someone die due to suffocation during one of these rituals not so long ago....anyhow that's what Lucia's birth put me in mind of...harrowing really, but well imagined in rich detail. Sure, the ceremony is freaky as hell, especially for an Imperial like Lucia, but honestly, just because there isn't any lore to indicate it exists doesn't necessarily mean it isn't "lore" at all. After all, Bethesda adds, removes and replaces lore all the time and leaves a lot of things open to us to fill in anyways. Who's to say there aren't Redguards who practice such a ceremony? (Not like anyone's going to police you or has the right to anyways.) Anyways, gotta feel for Siara. Things are already hard enough and the worst is most likely to come. Maybe. At least there's some cause for celebration for their new family member. |

Thanks, neil and monkey! There's just not a whole lot of "family" sort of lore about Redguards. I tend to see them as a Skyrimish Bedouin sort of culture. Though the "birthing" scene doesn't come from the Bedouin, AFAIK.... I really don't know where that came from - it was just THERE and I had to write it.... |

Hmmm. I haven't read that in a while. Was there something in there like that? I tend not to remember specifics (well - I remember VERY specifically the "oaths brought home to roost" chapter - and in fact, the MINUTE someone mentions Misty Lackey, I get the shivers because I remember it so well....) Guess it's time to go back and reread it! |

I'm doing the ..."was it in that book" or was it one of the short stories in the anthology that the original short story of Tarma and Kethery was in... I'm catching up on the series atm...slowly. |

Well, I can't actually recall it. So I'll have to go reread stuff. Hmm. I bet I don't even have the S & S anthology on my kindle. I'll have to find it. Was it S & S III? |
