Siara Part Two; 17:

Morrowdawn, I settled to thinking about Dawnstar, Silus Vesuius, and Mehrunes Dagon. I didn’t really know why I didn’t trust the museum’s owner - but I didn’t. It might have something to do with Dagon being involved. And I wondered if it would be better to seek out Vaermina first. Or Sanguine. Sanguine didn’t seem to have a shrine in Skyrim though. At least as far as I’d been able to find.

Elgial sat down next to me. “You are fretting over Dagon, aren’t you?”

“Yes....” I explained about the man with the museum, the Razor’s shards that we’d collected, and that I didn’t trust Silus Vesuius.

“Will you let me come with you when you go?”

I looked at him, startled. “Why would you want to come with us?”

“I - think - having a mage along.... would be of some assistance in this....”

Ah. So he was one with the knowing. Not being mage-gifted myself, it was hard for me to understand - but usually those who knew also felt they could help. “Well, then. Yes. You should talk to Arnem about which horse.... I’m not sure just when we’ll be leaving....”

“Thank you, Siara. I’ll go talk to Arnem. Um. Deni’s probably going to come along too....”

I almost fell over. “She can’t!”

“If you don’t agree, she’ll just run off and follow on her own. That’s not safe at all....” He looked at me in concern. “You’re awfully pale....”

That Deni kid is a liability. Too old to control, too young to understand. I would be placing her under house arrest for her own good.

I feel for Siara, she's got her hands full and about to head into great danger, the last thing she needs to have to worry about is willful children (no matter how well intentioned).

I can't wait for the show down at the shrine! :)

At the risk of giving away some of my darker past, I know a little something about such a ritual in RL. It's actually a Satanic ritual intended to make the "child" (even if already an adult) the offspring of Satan or the Deity in question. It can be very complicated, but it usually ends with the sacrifice of the "child". We can certainly hope that is not the case this time, eh? :)

If you think that bit of knowledge is unusual, just wait until I describe how to pack a dead man's head with beans to create a RL invisibility spell...

Siara Part Two; 18:

After Elgial left, I just sat in sheer stunned stupefaction. Deni can’t.... but Elgial was right - she’d do something unsafe if I told her no. And I couldn’t exactly tie her up and leave her in a cell. Though I WANTED to....

I suppose I hadn’t realized how.... difficult being a mother would be. And now I would be one again.... but I do think it will be easier to begin at the beginning instead of in the middle as I did with Denira! Well, the next thing to do was find Andur. Perhaps my mate might have some ideas.

Not so much as it turned out. “I don’t know either, wife! We can’t jail her” - and hadn’t I known that myself? - "and she’s fully old enough to follow. Now she’s got magic, she’s.... dangerous in her own right....”

True. So perhaps.... I should quit being a mother hen. The whole thing made me shaky inside though - Denira was in my care and keeping until she was grown. I thought I was trying to be careful that she live to grow up.... but apparently she thought she could help by being with us.

I went to find her after a bit. She was - just sitting on her bed, her face blank. She looked through me for a moment before becoming aware.

“Mama.... I know you’re angry....”

“No, not so much. Afraid. But we know we cannot put you in a cell so you can’t follow. Perhaps - you might tell me why you think you have to accompany us.”

“I.... it came to me - that in some way, if I’m not there with you, nothing will fall out as it should, either with the museum man or with that daedra. I don’t know what or why - but I feel it here and here and here” her hand went to her forehead, her heart, and her belly.

“Andur says you are dangerous in your own right. Because of the magic.... Are you getting good with the tantos?”

“Aye. I practice a lot. I use the magic to disappear, and the tantos to kill from behind. A coward’s trick I guess - but if they’re trying to kill me....”

“Well, that’s only fair after all. I will talk to Andur again, and with Selalla - and we will see what comes of it. I can only burn once if I fail to protect you....”

She suddenly broke down in sobs and tears. I left her to it. That had been a bit mean, but well....

Nicely put together Sere.
I WOULD leave her in a cell...no question.
She could make Siara take her eye of the ball at exactly the wrong moment...could be a disaster. I hate pushy kids.
Good story though Sere.

Great read... Life, decides how "old" one is... not biology.

some are "children" til they are in their mid to late 20's.. some are as "adult" and responsible as one could ask for at 13.

Rick, the thing is - this is Skyrim. It's a HARD land.... Now, this is how I see it: kids mature early - they have to. Beth set up a LOT of orphans.... so it's obvious why kids have to grow up fast. And once they know how to kill.... well, they feel they shouldn't be kept "wrapped in tundra cotton".

That's my take on it. I do my best not to try to put "today's mores" into this game. Deni has mage-gift; she's good with those daggers. And some of her gift is "knowing".

Or so I'm told....

Areial.... Hmph. Husband (82) is still a child in SO many ways. Do NOT get me started.

Very good Sere, though it's sad that Deni IS old before her time...

But then, I know it feels.

Hmmm....I reserve judgement
See...theres much difference between a grown up attitude
And adult experience
Kids always think they know what to do
Until they find they don't
Learning that lesson is best not done in front of a Daedric prince, hmmm.

I enjoy the tale all the same :)

I fully support the small mage-child. Especially one that combines invisibility and surprise stabbing. That said, while it's good to let her get some experience, she might need a bit of supervision. For now.

Well, guys.... I'm not doing anything but being the scribe here. So.... we'll see how it works out.

Regardless, medieval societies didn't really go in for child protection. Perhaps a bit in the aristocracy - but common to middle level folk? Nope.

Siara Part Two; 19:

We spent the next few days preparing. Deni was very quiet. Well, we all were. The four of us and Bandaganvar left early on the seventh day, to ride as far as Whiterun then take the carriage to Dawnstar - the stable was still a-building in Falkreath and a carriage driver had to be hired before we could use the local city.

The ride to Whiterun was easy and calm - until the skies opened and the rain decided to drown us. We covered what we could with cloaks and hoods, but by the time we reached the Whiterun stables, we were wet through. The rain showed no signs of letting up.

We were fully as miserable in the carriage (open wagon more like) as we had been riding. We paid extra to take the dog inside with us, and tie the horses behind. We tried to keep covered in cloaks, but it was impossible to cover every bit of us - though Deni and the dog, being smaller, were a bit drier than we adults.

Andur whispered to me, “Is this going to hurt you, being with child?”

I shook my head. “No. I probably won’t even catch a cold. Being wet isn’t fun, but it’s not really harmful.” Of course, if the temperature dropped, and this turned to snow.... well, we’d deal with it if it happened.

Bjorlam stopped at dark, pulling into a deep copse of trees which broke the rain somewhat. Elgial and Deni set to cutting some of the branches from the trees and brush to make the area even more tight against the rain. I’d never seen that done before - of course, living in Hammerfell, where there weren’t forests.... well, or rain.... We actually managed to get some sleep, and the rain had become just a mist by morning, which meant we made better speed.

Two more nights without rain, and only a couple of times did we have to fight off wolves. Bjorlam dropped us outside Dawnstar in late afternoon. We saddled the horses, and mounting, rode through the town to the house of Silus Vesuius.
