Ugh, not a fan of sopping wet, especially while travelling when there's no other choice! Andur is so sweet to worry too! Great read, and I sympathized with them!

I like him. He strikes me as very strong when he needs to be, but very private, quiet. :) Very caring.

Thank you Kind Sir Rick! This draws on an elk hunt in.... hummmm.... 2002 maybe - we took the horses and didn't have a trailer or camper at that point. We were camped at 7k+ feet, a tent pitched for getting out of the weather, and for cooking, and we were sleeping on an air mattress in the back of the truck (under a high shell, so fully OUT of the weather.... but not WARM....)

Husband had to take the horses a mile to water - we.... um.... looked at the folks camped there.... and chose to NOT stay there. They weren't about to mess with him - and the shotgun (which was NOT loaded with something innocuous....)

During the days, we rode out north and east looking for elk. There were plenty of creeks and streams so the boys had water. It was just getting them tanked up for overnight that was iffy.

Anyway, that was literally two weeks of cold wet frozen HELL. It rained, hailed, snowed.... the entire time. By the time we needed to leave.... the roads (dirt....) were bogged. Getting the truck and trailer out - was an exercise in sheer endurance and stubbornness. We didn't bother to try to get "UN-muddy" - we just lit out for home.

And we didn't get an elk. THEY were a lot smarter than people that year.

Siara Part Two; 20:

Vesuius was.... a bit miffed we’d taken so long. Finally Andur cut him off. “The daedra’s not going anywhere. So, where’s this shrine?”

I handed over my little map and Silus marked a spot - near the top of a mountain outside Morthal, halfway to the nowhere between that city and the white nothing southwest of Dawnstar. “I’ll meet you there” he said, and left immediately.

“We should just camp out and sleep some, in the meadow like we did the last time. I’m not interested in finding this place in the dark....” Besides, I was, as usual.... tired. Andur nodded. We gathered up Elgial and Deni, and did just that - though we did, after staking out the horses, go to the inn for a meal. None of us really wanted to worry about cooking this night.

I think none of us slept well. Deni eventually wormed her way between Andur and me, and with that much extra warmth, we three got a bit more sleep. Morrowdawn, Elgial looked like the seven hells warmed over, poor man. But we all chewed trail biscuit, saddled, and got on the road. It was probably a good day and a half - and who knew what the trail would be like. The daedra generally hid their shrines - according to Elgial, they weren’t really good neighbors.

Mid-day on the second day, we passed a mine holt. It seemed to be directly below where the shrine should be, but it looked to me as if there was no way to get up the sheer rock faces of the mountain. We rode on, to the north and east, hoping to find a trail upward eventually. By evening we were all dead tired, and exasperated.

I finally called a halt. There was a decent corner off the road - some rock had fallen off the mountain-face, and a tree was down over it, which would give us some protection from weather and cold.

“Enough. We’ll camp, eat, and sleep. There is no hurry to this. We will arrive when we do.”

Deni cooked something from the stores, and we all ate - actually it was good, but none of us were very forthcoming with praise. Well, I did thank her for the cooking.... she smiled, and after cleaning up the pan, hurried through a wash and into her bedroll. I wasn't much behind her. I heard the men talking quietly, but couldn't stay awake to listen....

Rick, the thing is - this is Skyrim. It's a HARD land.... Now, this is how I see it: kids mature early - they have to. Beth set up a LOT of orphans.... so it's obvious why kids have to grow up fast. And once they know how to kill.... well, they feel they shouldn't be kept "wrapped in tundra cotton".

That's my take on it. I do my best not to try to put "today's mores" into this game. Deni has mage-gift; she's good with those daggers. And some of her gift is "knowing".

Or so I'm told....

Areial.... Hmph. Husband (82) is still a child in SO many ways. Do NOT get me started.
We, as a society, have chosen to ignore the strengths inherent in children. I don't mean to say that we should be careless or callous in protecting kids, but... I'm minded of something said by the Taylor in the movie "Poltergeist II"...

"Children have fought wars. They've built nations. They are strong and have courage. Don't treat them any less than that because they're young."

Heh, that's a whole other subject, eh? Of course parenting in Skyrim would be a good bit different from parenting in RL as most Westerners experience it anyway. :)

Siara Part Two; 21:

We found the way about mid-morning. It looked like a long climb. “We should leave the horses here. We might not find any way to turn them up there” Andur said.

“Yes, you’re right. The higher we go, the likelier the path will be cramped, narrow.”

Elgial and Deni nodded. I - just - kept myself from telling her to stay with the horses.... I wanted to, desperately. But I didn’t. She turned a grateful look on me. Now how on Nirn was I to be mother if the child could read my thoughts? I sighed to myself. I could only hope that by the time I was a mother the normal way, I’d have figured things out.... even if I thought it not too likely. And then I thought that things like thinking that were mostly because of being pregnant. And I really needed to stop worrying about the wrong things....

It was not only a long switch-backing climb, it was cold - and got colder. Whether that was just the weather hereabouts or something of Dagon’s doing, I couldn’t have said. But by the time we were maybe halfway, we were moving (VERY slowly) through a blizzard.

Finally we stopped at the opening of a cave-mouth. As we moved into it slightly out of the weather, I shuddered with more than cold.

Deni exclaimed, “Be careful! Go no further. This is an evil place - we’re safe enough here, but do not enter!”

Elgial nodded agreement. So we stopped, and wished for a fire. We were out of the wind and snow, barely. We waited about an hour, until the blizzard died off a bit. I was never so glad to leave something behind as I was that opening. And after more thought, I decided that the blizzard was likely to do with that place, and not Dagon. I hoped I wasn’t making my wish out to be the truth....

Suddenly to our right was a flight of very steep steps climbing up the shoulder of the mountain. I looked at Elgial and Deni, and got nods from both. So we went upward, another long ascent. And then we were out upon a clearing, with an ugly dark altar in it, and - oddly enough, a door set into the mountain beyond it.

Vesuius turned from the altar. “Good - you’re here.” He returned to the altar and laid out the pieces of the dagger as well as the sheath on it. Raising his hands, he intoned a probable invocation to Dagon.

The silence was deafening. Vesuius stepped back, an odd look on his face. “It’s.... not working. You try it.”

I looked at him as if he was crazy, Then a huge echoing voice wrapped around all the silence. “You. Mortal. YOU are worthy. Or.... hmm. What ARE you? Oh. How.... unusual. You’re one of those Hammerfell whelps. What are you doing here?

“Ah. You seek a death - mine. And weregild from me.” Suddenly horrendous laughter echoed from all directions.

“Mortal. I cannot be killed. I’m sure you know that. But I can be coerced....”

I shuddered. Vesuius looked - shocked. Deni stepped next to me and took my hand. Elgial and Andur, both pale, stood to each side of us. I wasn’t at all sure what to do....

Hmmmm......well its ALL a bad idea....Dagon will toy with them....they' ll be lucky to all escape. I say throw him a sacrifice...Vesuius.....might be enough! Dagon is effectively a god....how Siara hopes to get revenge on him is beyond me.....

So I wait with bated breath.....good one Sere!

You know, I do appreciate that you all "got" that. It's obvious Dagon's an immortal, and has powers beyond those given even to the mage-gifted.

I was more than a little surprised myself at how that part of the scene played out. But yes, it was very much a "Holy SHIT" moment....
