This one is called Nokandu, and this is his story. Nokandu is Khajiit, born in Cyrodiil of Khajiiti mother and indeterminate father, and orphaned at six. He grew up in the streets of the Imperial City, and at 17 was accepted to the Blue Team in the Arena. There he fought for three years, and was billed as The Clawyer, for he used no weapons. And there this one would have remained, to die young and happy, but for an unfortunate misunderstanding with the Guards, over a matter of some noble's jewelry unaccountably finding its way into Nokandu's pocket. While in prison, Nokandu was befriended by an old Breton jailer, who instructed him in basic magic, and taught him how to brew simple potions When he was released, this one could no longer find employment in the city, so he joined a band of Khajiiti merchants as a caravan guard, and traveled with them to the cold and forbidding land of Skyrim. And there this one would have remained, to travel from city to city hawking wares, but for an unfortunate snowstorm on the road west of Windhelm, and a missed turn in the blinding whiteness, and the seeking of shelter in a cave that seemed little more than a cleft in the rock, and a sudden fall into a deep pit, and into rushing waters, and down many cascades through the darkness that even Nokandu's night vision could not pierce. And so it was that this one was flushed out into a small lake, in the most enormous cave that ever was, wet, cold and tired, and all alone. And he found there great Dwemer towers, and roads, and strange machinery. And enemies, too. Falmer, blind but wily. And machines that walked or rolled along. This one was very tired, and was perhaps not cautious, because when he was sneaking past a strange metal globe, it suddenly opened up and became a warrior on wheels, and gave chase. And Nokandu ran like a frightened rabbit, and rushed to a strange house, and slammed the door behind him. And so it is that poor Nokandu now is imprisoned inside a small room, next to a long-dead alchemist named Sinderion, with a Dwemer Sphere standing guard outside the door. * *Live Another Life alternate start mod...Nokandu is starting in Sinderion's laboratory, deep in Blackreach. He will be played at Adept, if he can, at level 1, get past the dwemer sphere, without dying a horrible death. Nokandu is an unarmored "monk" (a mod-added "class") who will use a combination of Claws (modded to improve with level), Archery, Alchemy, Alteration, and Sneak. |

This one lives. Nokandu found herbs among the effects of old dead Sinderion, and a dusty old alchemy set. Nokandu remembered well the lessons of his old Breton teacher, and brewed nirnroot, chaurus egg, luna moth, and ice wraith teeth into two potions of very brief invisibility. He found also herbs and mushrooms to make several healing salves, and a strange humming ball, which he put into his pocket. Thus equipped, this one burst through the door, gulped an invisibility potion, and sprinted for his life. Nokandu was hit one mighty blow on his back as he fled, but leaped to some rocks, and hid in the shadows. There he applied a healing salve to his wound. The Dwemer Sphere rolled to and fro, searching for this one, and attracted the attention of a lurking Falmer. The two fought, and lucky Nokandu was forgotten in his hiding place. The falmer died, and the sphere, greatly wounded, returned to its post near Sinderion's door. This one was now free to explore a bit. He found gold on the falmer, and cut off his ears as trophies. He then found a big dwemer crossbow, and on impulse aimed it across at the wounded dwemer sphere, and let fly its arrows. The aim was true, and the guardian flew to pieces. Nokandu found two soul gems and five golden crossbow bolts in the wreckage. Nokandu now had secured the area, and could explore freely the nearby buildings. He discovered a closed portcullis at the lower part of a high tower, and found a concealed button to open it. Inside was a handle, which this one careful pulled, and Nokandu was suddenly carried high up through a vertical shaft, and up to daylight. Nokandu was free, but he did not know where he was. |

It was snowing, but not as hard as before. The daylight was not bright enough to be midday, but this one had no way to know whether it was morning or afternoon. So he climbed a nearby rock, and had a look around. Below him, and some distance away, Nokandu could see a road, and it passed near a distant large nord-house with a thatched roof, which this one thought to be perhaps an inn. Looking back, this one noted what sort of building he had arrived from; the dwarven lift machine was housed in a metal cage, and the door stood open where Nokandu had left it. Nokandu wondered if perhaps he should close the door, to prevent some wanderer from entering, but decided that he would not meddle with the device any more, lest some other danger might arise. This one is neither a fool nor a hero. Nokandu now descended by the trail from the lift-hut, and found that it intersected with another path, running straight up to a mountain pass. Here this one found two fur-clad warriors, a nord and a dunmer, running back and forth with their weapons raised. Nokandu approached them cautiously, fearing they might be bandits. Speaking with the dunmer, who was named Athis, this one was informed that he and Torvar were "companions." This one thought that was perfectly obvious, since they seemed to be traveling together, but Nokandu wondered if perhaps they meant something different by the word. He did not want to offend by asking, though, because it was really none of Nokandu's business what sort of companions they were. To each his own, as Nokandu sees it. Further along the path, this one met a large man named Farkas, who was killing two wolves. He claimed also to be a companion, although clearly there was only one of him. This Skyrim can be a most confusing place. Nokandu climbed to the top of the pass, and found there a shrine. He liberated an enchanted amulet, which he put on, and he also picked up a few pieces of heavy armor, which are too large and heavy for this one to wear, but which will sell for several gold septims should Nokandu survive long enough to see a marketplace. Beyond the pass was snow and ice, and far away, Nokandu could see icebergs floating in the sea. This one now had his bearings; that direction must be north, and there was nothing that Nokandu wanted less than more ice and snow. So he returned down the path, and it was evening by the time he reached the thatch nord-house, which was indeed an inn. Nokandu had a few goldpieces, and a bed seemed a good idea. So now Nokandu has had a good meal of roasted goat, and rests beside a warm fire. |

Nokandu has come safely to the city of Whiterun. After this one stayed the night at the Nightgate Inn, the innkeeper suggested several local sights that might be of interest to tourists. He mentioned, in particular, that the Shrine of Azura was to be found less than a day's journey to the northeast. Nokandu decided to go southwest. This khajiit has heard about daedra. Outside of Silverdrift Lair, this one met two fur-clad bandits who had never heard of khajiit claws. This one gave them a demonstration, and acquired a bow and 16 iron arrows, and also several lockpicks and a rusty iron sword. This one was not sure what sort of animal their fur armor had originally been part of, but no matter; it was not from any kind of khajiit, and it would sell. Nokandu will not wear fur; he finds it disturbing to put another thing's skin over his own. A bit further on, a roadside peddler tried to sell Nokandu moon sugar at a very high price. Nokandu had not enough gold to make the transaction, and anyway was skeptical about the quality of the sugar. Another danger this one encountered on the road was a small frostbite spider, who was also ill-informed about khajiit claws. After killing the spider, Nokandu had a strange feeling of greater well-being, as if he had somehow become more healthy. He also felt that he suddenly knew more about Alchemy than he had before. It was very odd, almost as if this one had risen somehow in the world. A bit further on, Nokandu came upon a madman in a strange hat, with a broken wagon; this one walked far around him, so as not to attract his attention. Nokandu was once bitten by a madman in Pell's Gate, and will not soon forget the long days of lying in his sickbed, with a poultice on his fevered brow, and the terrible taste of the potions of Cure Disease. This one caught many butterflies on his walk. Nokandu wonders why there are no butterfly nets sold in Skyrim. Arriving at last at Whiterun, Nokandu was pleased to see that Ri'saad and his caravan had set up camp outside the gate. Nokandu traded some items to Ri'saad, and asked whether he might join them as a guard. Ri'saad replied that he did not need a guard, and further added that Ma'dran, this one's former employer, had said that this one was unreliable, having abandoned his post during a snow storm. This one tried to explain. Ri'saad made all the right sympathetic noises, but Nokandu does not think that his story was believed. This one is not sure that he believes it either. Nokandu is curiously cautious these days it would seem. His ruminations on his current situation make me chuckle, smile and feel for the poor Khajiit! Let's hope he gets to spend quality time at an alchemy station and just sort some things out! :) |

The guard at the Whiterun gate gave this one a hard time, accusing Nokandu of belonging to "that thieving pack of cats outside the wall." Nokandu protested innocence, and showing the guard a handful of flowers, claimed to be working for the local alchemist; Nokandu hoped that there was a local alchemist. Obviously there was, because this one was given a scowl, and the gate was opened. Inside the gate, another guard looked at Nokandu and said "No lolly-gagging!" Nokandu assured the guard that he did not know Lolly, and had no intentions of gagging her. Nokandu hoped that the local alchemist was not named Lolly, else this one might fall under suspicion. It turned out that the local alchemist was an absentminded Imperial named Arcadia, who allowed Nokandu the use of her alchemy equipment. Nokandu brewed up several healing potions, as well as some dangerous poisons, and then made several extra potions to sell to Arcadia. She particularly liked the potions this one made from blue flowers and blue butterfly wings; Nokandu left her shop with his purse jingling with coin. Nokandu met a Redguard named Amren, whose family sword had been stolen by bandits and taken to a place called Halted Stream Camp. Since the Skyrim bandits this one had met so far seemed unacquainted with khajiit claws, Nokandu decided to help this man, and perhaps earn some easy coin. Nokandu also was given a bounty letter from the Jarl, for more bandits in a place called Valtheim Towers. Nokandu bought arrows from the smith, and set off on his adventures. The guard at the gate made a rude noise behind Nokandu's back as he left, but Nokandu pretended not to notice. It was raining when this one returned two days later, cold and wet, but loaded down with bandit loot. At Halted Stream Camp, Nokandu found no stream. Perhaps it was halted somewhere else, and that is why it did not arrive at the camp. But this one found bandits aplenty, and killed them all. Those outside he lured away from their walls with arrow shots, and killed one by one. Those inside he attacked by stealth, and set fire to them with the oil from their own lamps. Amren's sword was there, in a chest, but it looked no different to Nokandu than any other sword. Nokandu also found a tome, which taught Nokandu to turn iron into gold. It took all of Nokandu's magicka to cast it, but with patience Nokandu was able to make several pieces of gold ore. This spell is a secret that this one intends to keep to himself. For this work, Nokandu was given useless lessons in fighting with a sword. Nokandu does not need a sword. The Valtheim Towers were on the other side of the river. There Nokandu killed several more bandits by luring them out of their towers. These nords are foolish, coming out of their safe walls to fight a khajiit. An armored nord with an axe is no match for khajiit claws. For this work, Nokandu was paid a few coins. This one is not greatly impressed by the steward of the Jarl of Whiterun. The odd sense of rising in the world has happened twice more. This one is healthier, and has learned to overdraw his bow for more power. Very strange. |
