Good luck with the restart, Areial. Hopefully no more problems will pop up.

Archmage Cassalda has been asked to retrieve a book for that pompous Orc in the Arcanaeum. Cassalda likes books better than she likes orcs, but has agreed to help.

Also, that idiot Onmund has gotten himself mixed up with the college black marketeer and scoundrel, and needs a bailout. Nords! It seems that being Archmage is more like being Chief Babysitter!

So...

Fortunately, Archmage Cassalda didn't have to go far to fetch Urag's book.

Unfortunately, he sent her into Sightless Pit.

Fortunately, she survived. :)

Is the Skull of Corruption an acceptable artifact? Cassalda is in Dawnstar, but I won't bother with the quest unless this staff counts (since I don't like to do the quest the "evil" way.)

Oh yeah....the skull of Contessa in Dawnstar...we gotta get that (once we get going) Although, quite how you're supposed to take down those Orcs with a couple of fireballs while they are whaling on you with axes is beyond me (which is, I guess why I don't DO robe wearers).

Glargg...as a "named staff" the Skull of Corruption ...counts for points.

Rick... you know, one does not have to wear a robe. Alteration work's pretty good with minimal armor rating, then when you get the right perk, you give up all armor for that ( or not). But let the Ax and 2h Orc's hack into a Frost or Storm Atronach. Or a Dremora Lord...cause Sanguine Rose count's for point's also..

Edit:
Works like this ( depending on magic...leave out some steps)
1) Summon Dremora * from Sanguine Rose* ( or Atronach)
2) Use Alteration spell
3) place Rune in doorway
4) "XXX Cloak"
5) throw spell that matches Atronach or use staff of XXX matching Atronach. or which ever spell if summoning Dremora

If it comes to an either or mostly I will use "cloak" spell and back peddle, keep them IN the range of the cloak spell, but out of hitting range.

Everyone is different and plays a bit different, I always choose to use some armor at lower levels, almost always have a follower to absorb some of the heavy hitters. Soon as the character has enough magic to use all the needed spells in one fight...the tank generally goes home...cause Runes and Follower AI don't mix well.

Thanks Areial,

Yeah, I know you 'casters' make it work really well, cos you survive.....

Here's a more typical Rick scenario..... Sneak in and find a 'chief' (any kind will do)....launch a ranged attack (bow or MfD), then back off and let follower (or a Dremora) take their attention, so you can support follower with additional attacks to the foes back, yes!......except...chief ignores follower and runs at you directly, weapon raised. Backing off is futile as they are fast....result....you get one two hander power attack on yer head! Narrow corridors, pitch dark and Deathlords waking up behind you...seal your doom!

Not just generically either....I have quite a few deaths tattooed in my mind in glorious Technicolor

Although at lower difficulties....I guess those hits aren't insta kill....so maybe my fears are due to my countless char deaths on Legendary...I may be mentally scarred for life....

I WILL try your suggestion...from behind a dragonscale shield ;)

Thanks, Areial. I thought that was the idea, but I wanted to make sure. :)

Rick,

In addition to what Areial said, there's more to Destruction alone than just "a couple of fireballs." :)

My Cassalda is basically unarmored most of the time, but she rarely gets hit by a melee fighter. Until yesterday (when she finally hit 50 Destruction), she was fighting almost exclusively with dual-cast firebolts or lightning bolts. It could take several hits to kill, even at Novice or Apprentice. The secret is the Impact perk, which interrupts any attack.

You just have to always control the situation, take on the enemy on your terms, and avoid getting into melee at all. Cassalda can easily defeat a heavily armored enemy just by blasting, stepping back, blasting, etc.

Many of the Destruction spells are "area of effect," so they hurt multiple enemies at once.

And the cloak spells are very effective. They extend further than the reach of any melee weapon, and you can dodge through groups of enemies, run around so they can't hit you, all the while roasting them.

What Glargg said... plus..how many perk's and how long smithing does it taking to get to making a Dragonscale shield? You also use a lot of Alchemy Perk's to make the potions to make the armor...

Nothing wrong with either...cause it's not against the rules... but that's a lot of non-magic perk's and skills to be leveling...

Thanks for the tips guys, We will be trying it out as you advise......but my training wheels is enough AR to take a good hit....cos I am not going to be that good at duel casting while backing up and NOT taking a deathlord hit.

The "Dragonscale" shield is a bit dramatised.....you only really need legendary smithed glass and a block perk ;)

The concept of "not getting hit" is alien to me, because I am used to getting in the thick of it and invariable a few blows land.....unarmoured that would be the end of your game with the first hit or arrow that gets through.

Even when I go all archery'ish I soon end up mobbed and have to switch to melee tactics (sniping is fun....until they're running at you).

Well......no matter....the point of this round for both of us is to get comfortable with those alien techniques.

The ultimate survivor in the TES universe is the Battle mage...incorporating all the methods.....archery, magics, melee and stealth.....juggling them to use whats best in each situation.....that is the true art :)

One day.....when Adella has grown....we will RP different styles properly....just for fun.

I was thinking of participating this time, but... well, things are a bit messed up in RL for me just now. My wifey, already struggling with terminal COPD and stage 4 enphysema was just diagnosed with lung cancer yesterday. She starts treatment next week, and I know I just won't be able to concentrate well enough to make a competition worthwhile.

Thanks to those you who asked me though, I do appreciate it.

Sorry to hear that Neil....like you I am a carer....in my case for my mother (87) who has a hospital bed in my lounge!

So I understand your troubled heart.....and the stress you are under.

In my mothers case....that inevitable fateful day could be tomorrow or next month or in two years....but no matter how much preparation we have....it will hit hard when it comes. Be strong for her....its all you can do.
Best wishes....

Neil...

I'm sorry about your wife. I'm wishing you both the strength and stamina to get through this, and that it works out the best it can be.

I also have a small-scale idea of what you're going through. My wife has recently come through a fight with breast cancer, which was fortunately caught early. She'll be okay, but it wasn't fun getting to here.

Hang in there, and keep us posted. You have friends here.

Areial's post of Adryannia's stats is interesting to me, because I think we're all approaching this in different ways, which might be enlightening to compare.

Here are Cassalda's present (Level 16, 22:54) stats:

Spoiler: click to toggle

Obviously, Cassalda is being played as a "pure" robed mage. Early on, she concentrated on Destruction and Conjuration, but is now adding in Illusion and Alteration. Mage armor, Crowd Control, and Stealth will become more important as the difficulty level rises.

She has slight rises in both armor skills because she wears gauntlets, boots, and a dragon priest mask (alternating between Krosis and Morokei.)

Her modest rise in Smithing has nothing to do with armor or weapons, but is from making jewelry to raise cash for spells and magic training. She also only makes potions for her use, and has not, to this point, put any perks into either of those crafts.

I have intentionally avoided raising skills that force one's level up too quickly, choosing to get the main CoW quest line out of the way early, and ignoring the Main Quest. This may or may not prove to be a good strategy in the long run. (I suspect that it doesn't really matter, because we're all going to be at high level and difficulty by the time we get to the Master quests.)
