Confederate Flag Taken Down

On Thursday Gov. Nikki Hale signed a measure to remove the controversial symbol from the grounds of the Statehouse. This flag obviously has some deep history behind it, which can be shown by how emotional the debate got for the flags removal. In the end the vote was 94-20, which came after 13 hours of debate. Supporters of the flag view it up as a symbol of Southern pride while others say it is a symbol of support for slavery and racism, how do you feel about its removal? Or more specifically the flag in general?

I feel glad it's finally removed, this flag is a symbol of hate and oppression not only for some Americans but oversees. The nazi flag is outlawed in Germany but the confederacy flag isn't and is widely used to show support of their neo-nazism ways.

It means what people want it to mean, if your from India then the swastika is still probably a religious symbol for you.

I do not believe it should have been taken down, you cant ignore the past by sweeping it under the rug. The Confederate flag was a symbol of southern pride, which include our prides inability to admit what we were doing was wrong; But also our pride in our way of life, our pride in where we came from, our pride in who we were and what we had built. It shows the regional unity of the south and our set in stone ways, to take it down gives into pressures of the rest of the world which demands we meet their ideals.

I disagree with this sentiment.

- Look, some say that the flag represents heritage, and culture. Some will say that the flag represents, the will of the Southern States, and the "right's of the states", but it also represents a time where slavery was legal, encouraged, and a large part of our society.

By taking a flag down from a public area, you are not destroying your heritage. Heritage, will be, and should be carried on in classrooms, and through education.

Heritage and culture, can never be, and should never be an excuse to flaunt the negative aspects of our past around, like it doesn't represent anything remotely racist.

That is my badly organized argument. I'm tired, and my thoughts are all over the place, but you get the point.

Guys, this isn't the confederate flag. This is the confederate battle flag. This flag was just what soldiers marched under. The only thing this flag should mean, is those who died for what they believe in. It's not a flag of hate, it's a flag of men, fighting for what they believed, and that was their family. Most men, did not fight for slavery, but fought for their state and family.

Yet we fly the American flag over lands that we Took from the natives.

The only difference is that the south lost.

Have to agree with Coyote, We fly the american flag over Native land when they did not wish to be intergated or suffer the cost that Western nations have inflicted upon them.

But personally, it is a symbol used by many Racial organizations and has been several times just used for Slavery but the flag is horrible anyway, we need fashionable flags in our country ;)

The Confederate Flag never was up there anyways.

The Battle Flag, pictured in the original post, was not the official "Confederate Flag." The Battle Flag came about because of a battlefield necessity. The actual flag of the Confederacy looked too similar to the flag of the Union, so as I understand a General of the Confederate Army headed/helped to head an effort to come up with a more distinguishable flag. That ended up being the Confederate Battle Flag, also known as the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia I think.

People now refer to the Battle Flag as the "Confederate Flag" almost every time it seems like, in posts and so forth around the internet. Only once, today, did I see someone specifically refer to it as the Battle Flag, and they maintained still, that it is a symbol of hate.

Now, I'd have thought that the official flag of a country would be the most 'accountable' as a symbol of hate, indeed being more symbolic in nature, not a more utilitarian flag meant for an army.

That the Battle Flag has indeed been used as a symbol of hate by white supremacists (mind you, decades after the flag's initial inception and usage) doesn't out of necessity mean that the flag is, absolutely, a symbol of hate, does it?

I think we have to consider how symbols can be co-opted, and such. Nordic runes and religion, the ancient South Asian swastika symbol, and so forth have been used by white supremacists, nazis and neo-nazis, and so forth--yet as I understand all are still used in much more median capacities, and shall I say original capacities(?).

I have to wonder if some people are letting the proverbial few bad apples ruin the whole bunch, in this case? If so, rather ironic, considering that probably the same people would also readily remind you that not all Muslims are bad/terrorists for instance (and I do not believe that all Muslims are terrorists or bad by the way), and there are likely other instances.

To avoid confusion: I do not live in or originate from the South. I do not have any real strong connection to the South. I do not condone slavery, racism, etc. I would just like to think that I am approaching this from the perspective of history, which I love, and logic (no guarantees there), with a cool head.

Yet to the poll question of is it a symbol of hate, I am tentative to vote "no." If you believe the press, every single owner of the Confederate Battle Flag is racist. C'est la media. But maybe it is more commonplace than I think.
