| Welcome to Talo Balka! This is the forum for the NationStates region known as Talo Balka. We're a new region that came about as a result of a merger between New Talos and Franco Balka. We're still in the very early stages of building our new home. You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. This is inspired by real-world international currency trading. Basically the idea is to write some code for our region so we can have our own currency exchange. Basically: > All nations in the region are given an amount of money (bigger government & bigger economy = more money). They periodically earn a small income as well based on the same. > Nations can spend money on buying the currency of other nations > The price of currency is determined by the supply of currency (smaller government & bigger economy) as well as the demand for the currency (if lots of people buy that currency, the price goes up, and selling brings the price back down) > The exchange rate is naturally determined by the price of your own currency and the price of theirs. > Nations can sell that currency for a profit (or loss) Other features we could have: > Leaderboards for top investors this month / week > Opportunities to loan money to other nations > The same simulation could also be applied to trade goods. Our nations could buy up gold or something > In the long term we could add all sorts of neat stuff I just thought it might be fun to code this. Would anyone here actually be interested or would it just be me? |

You can just use a standard 'a' in my currency's name if that damn extended Latin alphabet gives you trouble.

Nominal exchange rates based on my calculations so far. This is accounting for trade but not investment. Nations that are more importers than exporters will generally have values below 1. The model assumes floating rates and free trade. Note some nations can have a good economy but a weak currency position if their trade industries (for which I've just used the industries that NS gives stats on) are weak. Yes, believe it or not, pizza and drinks are far more heavily traded commodities than retail in our world.

Finished coding the AI for private investors. Again, very basic. Private investors like business subsidies, pro-market policies, and highly developed people who aren't particularly rude. How much private investment there is, is a set percentage of publicly held wealth. Their main effect is to push up the price of a currency by reducing supply.
People really are investing a lot into the Talo Balkan Standard it seems. Almost $50 million of investments for a "nation" with a GDP of about $275,000

BTW, I think these exchange rates equations will be final for the initial release. This should account for basically all important factors in determining currency valuation.
