The Apocalypse Hockey League is set centuries in the future. The opening season took place in 3000AD, which makes tracking time extremely simple.

Sometime around 2500AD, a catastrophic event destroyed most habitable planets of the Universe. It not only obliterated worlds but also disturbed the space/time continuum, causing beings from different universes to now share the same timeline.

Luckily, small groups on every planet were saved from certain death by embarking on a journey through the vast emptiness of the Cosmos. While advanced civilizations built their own ark-like ships, more primitive ones discovered them on their planets and learned to use them in secret. When it became apparent that there was no other way to survive, civilizations left their planet, searching for nothing but a way to survive.

In 2950AD, two stations met. Curiosity overtook inhabitants from both ships and they looked past potential dangers to enter in communication with one another. Anything to break the isolation they were both victims of for over 400 years.

The two people quickly bonded and organized to join their stations together. They would name their joined station Apocalypse, as a reminder of what brought them all together. Although controls were strict to move from one station to the other, an era of cooperation and friendship began. One of the things that resulted from this was the creation of a sport that closely resembled ice hockey.

One could believe that civilizations this advanced would have no interest for violence but staying isolated for centuries and a growing lack of space on their stations developed a fondness for barbaric sports that every people joining Apocalypse shared. They saw the creation of this new common sport as a way to establish their superiority, give their people pride and also control the population. It quickly became a rule of Apocalypse to provide players for this sport every year. Stations that would fail to do so would face consequences that could go as far as seeing their station detatched from Apocalypse.

Winning the championship gives the champion station more political power for the year that follows, like deciding the direction Apocalypse is going, being the one to welcome new civilizations to the station or simply redecorating the common areas to fit their people's esthetics. A reminder of their victory over all others.
