At some point I decided to do a Pokemon Fire Red speedrun. I'd never really done a seedrun before and didn't practice or learn routes. It was [flash]stressful and exhausting. I eventually gave up.

I did go back to it later because I hated leaving it unfinished. Before I gave up, it was all in one exhausting sitting.

Eventually I did a second, better run. I beat the game at 4:01. I still messed up a few times and could have shaved a half hour off the time. I also saved and quit several times because of how exhausting it was.

Both playthroughs were on the same bootleg cart. I checked back around 3 years later and the team was still there so I decided to preserve my team. Here's that video. I'd like to do this again sometime but I might prepare more. this is not something I find fun to be honest.

Make sure it's a game you're familiar with. That's why I picked Fire Red. Because I spent so much time in Pokemon Blue years ago when I got into handheld gaming. I was really rusty, despite still playing Pokemon. I also did a partial speed run of the game NIER. There was an Xbox 360 achievement to beat the game in under 15 hours. When I got to the second half of the game and realized how much time I had, I slowed down a handful of times only to speed back up and see how fast I could get. I got somewhere around 7 hours and saw a speedrunner do it in 5.

I'd also suggest doing a shorter game. Playing a game for 5 hours straight can be exhausting. Especially when you're trying to do everything fast and every little mistake is costing you. It's exhausting, stressful and tedious and it's why I've never done it again despite wanting to. I've considered Hitman, Risen, Crackdown, Two Worlds, etc. It requires a lot of planning. I'll help in any way I can if It's a game I know.

I've considered some games like Outlast, Among the Sleep, Mirror's Edge. The games I know best would be Silent Hill and Resident Evil. All of these I've completed at least once.

I'd suggest picking your game, trying to plan out some strategies and paths. Then just do a casual playthrough and try to be fast but don't bother too much. Just observe your mistakes and see what could be improved, try some different paths. Work on things like optimal reloading times, cover, avoiding enemies, shortcuts, ammo, exploits, etc. When you feel like you have a pretty good idea of how to get through a game, just give it a shot. It can be a lot of fun but it can also be exhausting. Just take it at your own pace or you'll end up like me, wanting to speed run but too wary of the toll it takes.

There's also the whole dedicating so much time to just playing 1 game when I have so many that I've yet to play.

Not to mention some of the glitches that you'd have to do to even compete with some of the best, you have to perform practically flawlessly. Best speedrun I saw was probably Ocarina of Time or Outlast

Slightly off topic, one guy was playing the game blindfolded and he actually glitched out of the wall in OoT. He was playing it blindfolded because he knew the game so well he could tell where he was but the random glitch (that I've personally never heard of or seen before) threw him off, it was so perfect.

I saw an Awesome Games Done Quick video from Jan 2015 where the guy was blindfolded. I didn't really pay attention to it as I was playing a game. I wonder if it's the same video.

You don't have to be flawless or the best to speed run though. You can just compete against yourself or your friends. Always pushing yourself to do better. If you want to get more serious, you could plan out or study routes through games and then practice them. It's not difficult to get into, but it does require some effort. Effort I sadly don't feel is deserving of my precious gaming time.
