I know we're fairly new as far as forums go, but I've got a favor to ask of you guys. I recently found out that one of my great friends in band is having a hard time. His littlest sister was diagnosed with aplastic anemia about a month ago. http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/medicine/...ow/bmtinfo.html The only hope for her to survive is a bone marrow transplant. There's a 35% chance that one of her siblings will be able to donate, but so far that's not working out. 70% of people needing bone marrow transplant cannot find a suitable donor. As much as I hate to say it, the numbers aren't on her side. But I refuse to give up hope based on the folly of numbers. I've proved 4=5 before, so I can rightly say they don't matter. These people are very active members of their church and community and they're a really nice family. This is a truly tragic thing to happen. All I can do is hope for the best. Please, PLEASE, keep them in your prayers and thoughts. It means a lot, faith has gotten them this far. If none of her siblings can supply a good marrow, they will try to organize a drive with both the band program and the church. I would agree in a heartbeat to donate if I could. I understand it's a risky procedure and sometimes the donors don't make it out alive. I also understand its an extremely painful procedure that will affect you for the rest of your life. But the thought of giving an eight year old girl a shot at life is not asking too much. Please pray for this family. Thanks guys. EDIT: They didn't find a match with her siblings. |

I'm terribly sorry to hear about this, and I know I could never know what your friend must be going through. I will make sure to keep their family in my thoughts. Please let them know that we are all pulling through for them and wish them only the very best. Not to sound self-righteous or anything, but this situation has led to me beginning to read a medical encyclopedia, so that I can learn as much about medicine as possible. I guess it will keep me prepared if anything happens to anyone in my neck of the woods. Is there any possibilty of an autologous transplant? |

In fact, I did. It was on the link you supplied. An autologous bone marrow transplant is when the person who needs the transplant supplies the marrow from another part of his/her body. Now that I think about it though, the disease needs to be in remission, and the donor bones healthy. If the bones ARE infected, they can be purged of malignant viruses. How are your friend and his sister doing? I sincerely hope that they can quickly find a match from a donor bank. |

As do it. They didn't find a match with her siblings. I don't think so. That would probably have been one of the first questions asked. I really can't ask him these questions, I can tell by his indifference about it it's obviously bothering him, he doesn't want people to know or make a big deal about it... Really all I can do is cheer him up all the time and hope for the best... Supposedly after this is all over, he's moving back to Florida..
