Chapter 1: Greenest in Flames

The road to Greenest has been light, but scenic, as you slowly make your way through the countryside of the Kingdom of Valeria, formerly known as the Burning Coast. You have each taken different paths to get to this point, but each path was as uneventful as the other. The lush plains of the coast don't allow for many hiding places for bandits or ambushes, and even so, adventurers such as yourselves don't typically have much difficulty with the random brigands and thieves that find themselves lurking in the shadows, waiting for unsuspecting prey.

Upon approaching the city, however, you immediately sense that something is wrong as the sun dips down towards the horizon. The normal sounds of summer suddenly draw quiet, instead replaced by screams and what sounds like the crackling of flames. You hear a cacophonous explosion, shaking the ground at your feet, even as far away from the town as you are, and your pace immediately quickens. As you crest the top of the hill that looks down into the valley where Greenest lies, you see a city in flames. From your distance, you can make out humanoid creatures frantically running around, causing chaos and attempting to strike down any villagers that come their way and, amongst all of the chaos down in the city streets, you hear an enormous "whoosh" as a blue dragon flaps its wings, soaring over your head and dipping down towards the town before letting off a blast of lightning that hits something, causing a massive explosion in the center of town.

Your pace quickens and each of you passes through the gates into the town at different times, all ending up in the town square at roughly the same time, each on different sides of the square, looking and surveying the damage done to the city.

Before you can react to anything, however, you notice three kobolds and what appears to be some sort of dragon-like creature anarchically destroying the town square. They are all too preoccupied with their current task to take notice of any of you. What would you like to do?

As far as who is who, Jareth is the top left token, Soliel is the top right and Oakenheel is the bottom left. Also, click on the spoiler to see an explanation of the map.

Jareth

Jareth, having listened to all of this curses under his breath as he taps on the hilt on his sword with his thumb. He locks eyes with Castellan.

"What are you getting us into here? I was asked to meet up with an old friend here, not to come and fight dragons. I've got business of my own to tend to. I'm not like Ulric here, ready to get myself killed for a bunch of strangers out of some sense of duty or justice or whatever. I'm a bandit and a mercenary, not a hero."

Castellan glances at Jareth.

"I know your type, boy, and I'm not expecting any more from you than self-preservation...But I promise you this. If your friend is alive, he's in the keep. So as long as we're heading the same way, you might as well help me keep these innocent people alive in the meantime."

Castellan steps out from the alcove.

"Once we get there, we can talk to the governor and you'll get your coveted reward."

Jareth

Jareth sets his jaw hard and glares at the dwarf.

"Don't call me boy or you may not make it to the keep, and there better be a reward for this."

Jareth turns to Soleil with a grim look on his face.

"Please tell me you're going. Ulric over there can't hit dirt if he fell off a horse. At least with you there I don't have to do all the work."

Soleil Moonshadow

Soleil gives a pitying look to Sir Ulric for a mere second before turning an intense gaze on Jareth.

"Jareth, if this is the Cult of Winged Fury, they murdered my family and twisted me into what I am today. You have no idea how much of myself I surrendered the night I took the Hunter's Bane. You call yourself a mercenary but I am a blood hunter. My very life's blood connects me with the darkest things you've only heard about."

She gives a grim look at Castellan then back to Jareth.

"At this point, my main focus is destroying them and the hell they are trying to unleash. Helping them is secondary to me although they may be useful soon, so try not to be such a dick. But I do need two things. You, Jareth, by my side, using those swords like you did today; like I know you've trained your whole life for." She turns to Sir Ulric with a tight smirk, "And you, Sir Ulric, I need you to actually grow a pair and fight beside us."

Jareth

As he takes in the words of Soleil, Jareth's expression turns dark and brooding. He goes from tapping on the hilt of his sword to unknowingly and instinctively grasping it.

"Vengeance is a cause I can get behind more-so than goodwill."

He turns to the dwarf.

"You have my swords."

Sir Ulric

"Today was... an aberration. Amonkira gave me a lesson in humility that I will not soon forget. You, Jareth, will not have to worry about me."

Ulric raises to his full 6'3" height, completely healed by Pike's actions, and turns to Soleil.

"As for your request, siha, to 'grow a pair'... I will prove myself on the field of battle when it arrives next, and if this quest truly leads us to a dragon, the next battle will get here quicker than before."

He returns his attention to the dwarf.

"Castellan, I pledge my axes to your cause."

"It's settled then," the ginger dwarf says, hefting his battle-axe once again. "To the keep."

He turns back towards the diminutive gnome accompanying them.

"Pike, you hang back and make sure none of these people get left behind. We'll forge ahead and make sure that it's safe."

No sooner does he say that, then you turn the corner to the final stretch between the city and the keep and find five kobolds and three humans standing in your way, the humans all wearing masks that are clearly recognizable as those of the Cult of the Dragon. Before you can do anything, the kobold closest to you sees you, quickly shouting out "Intruders! Intruders!" in draconic.

Castellan quickly takes stock of the situation before charging at the closest kobold -- the one that sounded the alarm. With a wild-eyed ferocity, he shouts, "For Greenest!" as he charges and swings his massive battle axe.

Castellan's ferocious swing finds purchase on the Kobold's torso, cleaving the lizard-like creature clean in half as he screams. Blood spatters across his armor as he continues moving towards the next Kobold following the attack.

Jareth

Jareth watches as the dwarf drops one Kobold. He unsheathes both his swords and shouts over at Soleil and Urlic.

"I'll go help him on the right, you two go left and we'll meet in the middle."

He locks eyes with Soleil, "Kill that bastard, and Ulric, you just try not to get killed".

Jareth does a made dash forward, past Castellan as he engages the Kobold with both swords flying.
