The road to Greenest has been light, but scenic, as you slowly make your way through the countryside of the Kingdom of Valeria, formerly known as the Burning Coast. You have each taken different paths to get to this point, but each path was as uneventful as the other. The lush plains of the coast don't allow for many hiding places for bandits or ambushes, and even so, adventurers such as yourselves don't typically have much difficulty with the random brigands and thieves that find themselves lurking in the shadows, waiting for unsuspecting prey.

Upon approaching the city, however, you immediately sense that something is wrong as the sun dips down towards the horizon. The normal sounds of summer suddenly draw quiet, instead replaced by screams and what sounds like the crackling of flames. You hear a cacophonous explosion, shaking the ground at your feet, even as far away from the town as you are, and your pace immediately quickens. As you crest the top of the hill that looks down into the valley where Greenest lies, you see a city in flames. From your distance, you can make out humanoid creatures frantically running around, causing chaos and attempting to strike down any villagers that come their way and, amongst all of the chaos down in the city streets, you hear an enormous "whoosh" as a blue dragon flaps its wings, soaring over your head and dipping down towards the town before letting off a blast of lightning that hits something, causing a massive explosion in the center of town.

Your pace quickens and each of you passes through the gates into the town at different times, all ending up in the town square at roughly the same time, each on different sides of the square, looking and surveying the damage done to the city.

Before you can react to anything, however, you notice three kobolds and what appears to be some sort of dragon-like creature anarchically destroying the town square. They are all too preoccupied with their current task to take notice of any of you. What would you like to do?

As far as who is who, Jareth is the top left token, Soliel is the top right and Oakenheel is the bottom left. Also, click on the spoiler to see an explanation of the map.

Castellan steps behind the cultist, flanking him as he's distracted by the impressive display by Ulric, and swings twice at the masked man's back with his massive great-axe.

In his fury, Castellan's first swing at the cultist fails to find purchase as the cultist saw the attack telegraphed and ducks out of the way. As he turns toward Castellan's second swipe with his axe, the masked man brings up his scimitar, deflecting the reckless attack with ease.

Jareth slashes at the cultist with his black-bladed swords, driving one through the masked man's midsection. As the sword slices into his midsection with ease, Jareth twists it and pulls the cultist forward before slicing his head clean off with his second swing. The cultist's head topples to the ground as Jareth pulls the blade from him and slowly begins to clean it. While he is doing this, Castellan shouts out, "Pike! The townsfolk! Quickly now!"

He looks at you as you all congregate near him once again.

"The keep is right there. We must hurry, before that damned beast makes another pass."

Jareth

"Not before I check these bastards for loot. I need something for me out of this."

He calls out to no one in particular.

"I'll check the corpses. Someone else check the area."

As he stars to search the corpses he glances at Ulric.

"And maybe you can hold your own. "

Soleil Moonshadow

Soleil just shakes her head and mutters "Bossy son of a bitch."

She turns to Sir Ulric with a smile, "Nice job, by the way."

She then moves to search the surrounding area for loot.

Between Jareth and Soleil, you find 22 gold pieces and a scimitar. Jareth, you also find a golden ring on one of the bodies. As you pick it up, it appears to change sizes and now looks like it would exactly fit onto your finger.

Castellan looks at the townsfolk and Pike, then at you.

"If it's all the same to you, I'd prefer to take care of any other business in the keep. The longer we're out here, the longer we're at risk."

Jareth

Jareth rattles the 22 gold pieces in his hand a moment. Then he slips seven in to his pocket, passes 7 more over to Soleil, then tosses 8 at Ulric.

"That extra is for the healing. My gratitude."

Jareth then turns his attention to the ring, the magic apparent. Then he turns to Soleil.

"You know magic, elf. When we're done I want to know what my new ring does. "

Castellan looks at the group, then nods at Pike and you begin to move forward towards the keep. As you move closer, you notice bodies strewn all about, some burnt, others dismembered, all wearing similar armor to that which Castellan and Pike are wearing.

Noticing your gazes, Castellan nods towards them.

"You see now why we need your help? Greenest isn't a large community. We're mostly made up of farmers and merchants. Our army...My army...It wasn't equipped for this sort of battle. Most of these people...They were our workers. Members of our militia called upon to try and turn away this attack. They were fathers...Brothers...Sons. They weren't soldiers. They didn't ask for this fate."

Castellan pauses, choking down his anger as Pike places a hand on his arm.

"You say you're not signing on for a goodwill mission, Jareth? That vengeance is more your style? These were my friends...My family. The only family I had left. If you think that vengeance isn't the first thing on my mind, you're sorely mistaken."
