Roleplaying Advice; For the roleplay impaired

Hello ! This thread doesn't really constitute hard "rules" that you'll have to follow to the letter, but something closer to general advice or guidelines when it comes to roleplaying on this forum - stuff to remember to make sure we don't end up with awkward situations someone'll have to awkwardly write their way out of.

1 - Remember the time and place. This is a fantasy RP in an original setting - be careful not to sneak in accidental references to modern stuff, even if it's just in expressions or words. We're very tolerant when it comes to the level of language required - no mandatory "ye olde butcherede english" here -, but don't accidentally break immersion by adding a reference to cellphones.

2 - Use clichés wisely. Clichés have been around since the dawn of litterature, and litterature has been a thing for so long that complete originality is effectively impossible. There's nothing inherently wrong with using clichés to build a character or a story: however, a casual reader shouldn't be able to guess your character's entire backstory and motivation just by vaguely glancing at it, and they should be deeper than skin-level.

3 - Be reasonable with meta stuff. A meta joke can be very funny and refreshing when it's used at the right moment and at the right spot: but excess of meta humor can completely suck a story dry of all its momentum, and is very, very obnoxious.

4 - Don't RP with yourself only. Having multiple characters controlled by the same roleplayer in a thread can be a very good occasion to create new, interesting situations and devellop new character interractions: but don't forget that other characters are here too, and there's a good chance that they'd react to what your character is doing. Don't have your two (or more) character hold entire conversations between themselves without leaving a chance for anyone to interject, it's pretty boring to read and frustrating for other RPers. This ties into the preceding point: don't try to show off how witty you are this way.

5 - NPCs are people too. Just because NPCs are here to help the story along and don't share the spotlight with the PCs doesn't mean they're all two-dimensionals props: it also doesn't mean your character would be able to kick their asses without any trouble - they're not here to make your character look good. Remember to treat them with the same respect you'd treat one of your PCs.

6 - Tag at a reasonable pace. We all get moments when our muse just doesn't show up when we want to, and when real life gets in the way. That's perfectly fine, however, make sure not to hold up threads for weeks and months on end.
