So the film received a PG-13 rating after being given an R last year/2014. Here's what I think (copied from a post I replied to on IMDb). Here's the argument: "I'm not one of those gorehounds who wants to force blood and violence into every horror film—Insidious and The Ring didn't need gore, and it would have felt unnatural if it was present—but I find it despicable when a movie that's intended for mature audiences is butchered in the editing room to please young souls. If a movie naturally translates from the script to the screen as an R-rated movie, then KEEP IT THAT WAY. Let it play out naturally. If a film plays out like a PG-13 film, but there are few unnecessarily explicit moments (that wouldn't be missed if they were cut) then it's okay if you trim the film down a bit to fulfill your desired MPAA rating. But to go from R-Rated "strong horror violence" to PG-13 "horror violence" shows that there were extreme cuts that the studios made to desperately reach a wider audience, while limiting creativity and excluding the film's most exciting/memorable moments in the process....ultimately lessening the impact. Deadpool just proved that there is an enormous audience for R-rated films. And I don't know why studios think that PG-13 horror will benefit them more. Films like The Conjuring, The Purge, Sinister, Annabelle, and all the '80s horror remakes have gained more profit than most modern PG-13 horror films. UGH IT JUST UPSETS ME WHEN THE NATURAL FLOW AND ARTISTIC FREEDOM OF A FILM IS LIMITED TO APPEAL TO YOUNGER AUDIENCES WHEN IT DOESNT NEED TO DO SO TO MAKE MONEY." My reply: I understand where you and people are coming from when expressing their anger towards the 'from-R-to-PG-13' rating, and as annoying as it is, I think many fail to see why it makes perfect sense. I'm all for artistic freedom, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it, yadda yadda, but let's get real here. This is another Amityville film we're talking about. A franchise that hasn't received much love since... ever? For starters: it's a hard sell. Especially as a R-rated horror movie. This isn't Deadpool. Which leads me to your point about Deadpool. That film was fresh as f*uck, had Ryan Reynolds starring in it and extremely clever marketing, and is a totally different beast all together. That is what audience got excited for, a R-rated super hero film. Reynolds was in the last Amityville, but unfortunately he's not this one for obvious reasons. You can't pull off Deadpool's marketing techniques with a film called "Amityville: The Awakening". You just can't. We do have Bella Thorne in this movie, who may be box office friendly. Bella is a popular actress among the younger audience (she has 10.1 million Instagram followers and 6.28 million on Twitter), she's huge on social media, so the new poster makes sense, and her fans will guaranteed fill a lot of seats in cinemas. Jennifer Jason Leigh also stars, and she's straight off Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and got nominated for a friggin' Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Something the marketing team can use to fill seats with a more mature audience. The Conjuring was rated R, true, and that was f*ucking scary. Annabelle, however, an R-rated film as well, riding on the success of The Conjuring, was awful. Both films relied on terror and suspense rather than gore, but the latter one failed hard when it came to scripts and characters. As for remakes of 80s films - Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street are household names, but they weren't received very well critically. A horror film with an R-rated stamp on it doesn't automatically make it good. Look at Insidious, The Ring, The Others, The Sixth Sense, The Last Exorcism, Drag Me To Hell - all pretty good films and some damn creepy and rated PG-13. Plenty of bad ones out there, too - White Noise, The Grudge 2, Poltergeist remake, etc. I'm not excusing or defending the producers of the film, I'm just reminding people to not forget that Hollywood's film industry is a business, too. Films are expensive to make and really expensive to promote. Just like any other company, The Weinstein Bros/Dimension Films expect to earn more money than they've spent on this film. The last time I checked, they're having some serious financial troubles so jumping from R to PG-13 for Amityville makes perfect, and perhaps the only, sense. It's a smart business decision to make. Will the film suffer from it? Probably. Probably not a lot. Probably not at all. Also: You can get away with *beep* when it comes to supernatural horror films, so I'm not too nervous about this film. I'm sure Dimension will release the original R-rated/unrated version on DVD & BluRay as a separate version to make an extra buck, too. They're gonna need it. It may not be fair to the people, me included, to get an altered, "water down" film we've been anticipating to come out, but it's just the way things sometime work in the film industry. Phew. Anyone agree and see where I'm coming from with this? What do you all think? |
