I like the idea of ignoring the remake, although I do think that since they feel the need to make yet another Freddy remake is kinda bland. To be honest, I think the Nightmare franchise is done and should remain done. Why not try and create some new horror icons instead of rehashing and, in the process of doing so, completely butchering the image of the icon?

But if they are going to do this, and hopefully do it right, I think cutting out the back story of Freddy would be a big mistake. It makes him who he is and that's why he's terrifying to kids. God knows I was scared shitless of him. I do like the idea of a female killer, but not for this franchise, no. All of our big killers are male; Freddy, Michael, Leatherface, Jason, etc. A female killer would be something new and fresh to see, but not in replacement of Freddy.

If they're going to do this, do it right, and most importantly:

The reason I'm cool with it is because if we're going to keep these franchises going, new interpretations are going to have to be added to keep it fresh. Like with superheroes, James Bond, Dracula, Frankenstein -- they all drift from their universes at some point or another.

If not a female, I'd love to just see something new and cool, but still captures the essence of what the original was. For instance, I'd love to see Freddy or Michael Myers in a period piece universe.

Imagine we got to see Freddy's story taking place in the medieval ages? He was a crazed blacksmith who killed many of the town's children. When the king failed to bring him to justice, the townfolk gathered and killed him -- stoned him and left him to burn to death in his house. Fifteen years later, the nightmares begin. The perception of the dream world would be influenced by the medieval era universe, so we could get some really original, really creative deaths for the franchise. Imagine an awesome production team gives us a killer interpretation of what a medieval Freddy Krueger would look like. I'd be so down for something like this.

THAT is a kickass idea. Write it. Sell it. Produce it.
