For anyone who doesn't know, a graphic novel is like a comic book, but... it's a novel. DJ has stated that The Merchant of Death will be published as a graphic novel on the same day Raven Rise is published--May 20th, 2008. From the offical Pendragon website:

On May 20th, 2008, the graphic novel of Pendragon: The Merchant of Death will be released, by D.J. MacHale, and adapted and illustrated by Carla Speed McNeil.

It’s an amazing thing to see Bobby and the Travelers come to life in another medium.  At first I was a little nervous about it, since everybody has their own image of the characters in their heads.  I didn’t want to spoil anyone’s personal vision.  Including my own!  But the graphic novel form is so specific I realized that this is more about going along with an overall style, as opposed to making the characters look exactly as they might in real life.  When I saw Carla Speed McNeil’s sketches, I was convinced.  This is a great way to depict the characters, action and story contained in the novels.  She has captured the essence and spirit of the story, and that’s what it’s all about,

Carla’s storytelling through images and words is masterful.  We’re seeing the Pendragon story in a whole new way.  It was fun working with her to relate my vision of some specific things like the flume and the quig bears.  Many things are pretty close to what I envisioned.  With others, Carla let her imagination take over.  That was fun too, seeing how somebody else interpreted my words.  I think the result is terrific.

This will introduce the Pendragon saga to a whole new audience…the fans of graphic novels.  Check out some of these early sketches.  It’s a little taste of what the first book is going to be.  I hope you like them as much as I do!

–D.J.

So, if there are any Pendragon fans here, I'd like to know what you think of this. I, personally, think it's great.

I haven't read the Pendragon books yet, but I think making graphic novels widens the audience a bit, say to younger readers and those who don't like to read at all. That way the ycan enjoy the story and maybe look forward to more.

The only thing that concerns me is that I think it would be a little... um... disturbing at the scene where the quig expoldes and is described as Hamburger Helper.

I don't like the idea of a Graphic Novel, but it will attract younger readers. It's been a while since I've read the first book, but he will surely make more graphic novels.

*Spoiler Warning for series*

In the 6th I wouldn't like to see the part of Loor dying. But then she comes back to life. Or the part in The Pilgrims of Rayne when Bobby is attacted by the Quig-bees.

Bobby looks pretty young, but I guess he's supposed to so far. I'm hoping they put up some more pics soon.

Thoughts on thier appearences?
