The room is small, but it has a cozy feel to it. It is the very last room on the top floor, and the single window was built into the roof. The sun is RJ's alarm clock. It rises directly above his room and fills it with too much light to sleep under. But RJ doesn't mind; he hates sleep with a passion.

RJ strolled up to his bedroom door. He dug into his left pocket as he whistled the melody of "You're Timeless To Me" Not finding what he was looking for in the first pocket, he tried the second, and there it was; the key! He quickly unlocked the door, stepped inside of his room and closed the door once again. He stopped whistling and began to sing. You're like a stinky old cheese, babe! Just getting riper with age. But the song was dull without Millie's beautiful voice. RJ took off his formal outfit and changed into pajamas; a white Tshirt and blue plaid pajama pants. Once in a more comfortable outfit, RJ flopped onto his bed. He put his hands under her head and continued to sing. You're like a fatal disease, babe! But there is no cure so let this fever rage. RJ paused the song as he stared out of his window. The moon seemed to be staring down at the boy. He thought about the night. Mostly about how he and Millie had performed in their own mini-musical on the playground. As he began to miss her, RJ sighed and quietly sang one last line. You're timeless to me. With that, he rolled over on his right side. Putting his right arm back underneath his head, he rested there and continued to think about Millie until he drifted off to sleep. |

Cassie couldn't sleep. Surprise, surprise. The kid, RJ, who had seemed to care so much about her scars and such, was really bugging her. Why does he care at all? What's his deal? Her clock read 3:10 AM, so Cassie figured if she hadn't slept by now, there was no hope for tonight. Leaving her room, she wandered the hallways until she happened to come across RJ's room. Out of curiousity, she slowly opened his door up. She was as quiet as she could be, but the door sqeaked slightly. Peering in, she saw the boy there, sleeping under a window that allowed some of the moonlight to fliter in. Insictively, she flinched away from it. She stared at him for a moment. As much as you hate sleep, at least you can when you're supposed to... She was aware she was being quite the hypocrite, but she didn't care. What this guy didn't know wouldn't hurt him. I wonder what his story is anyways.... |

RJ's sleep was suddenly interrupted. His eyes shot open and he gasped a little as he heard his door open. He sat up and looked over towards the door, surprised and slightly frightened to see Cassandra peering in. Hey. He uttered quietly. What are you doing here? Is something wrong? |

Cassie froze for a moment as RJ suddenly woke up. Aww, shit... This was embarssing. She sighed slightly and shook her head. "No, it's nothing... sorry to wake you..." Her face having turned bright read, she was thankful for the darkness. She started to back up and shut the door again. |

RJ watched as Cassie started to leave, and wondered why she had come to his room in the first place. Wait! He moved around to sit on the edge of the mattress. A small smile came to his lips as he scratched the back of his head. I hate sleep, remember? So thanks for waking me up. He firmly put his hands on his knees and tilted his head curiously. Can't sleep? |

Cassie stopped and leaned againist the door frame. "Nope. it doesn't surprise me though... I got a good two hours in day before yesterday. Unfortuntly, I was out in the park and just kind of passed out..." She gave him a small smile, and the looked at him for a moment. She bit her lip and asked, "May I come in?" She might regret it, but she would rather have someone to talk to than be alone and bored for the rest of the night. |

RJ nodded his head lightly as he thought back. Cassie had already told him that she usually went a couple of nights without sleeping a wink. He figured that staying up by yourself for nights on end could get lonely, so he grinned when she asked to come in. Of course! He got up from his bed and grabbed his desk chair, setting it out for Cassie. |

Xassie came in and shut the door behind her. She sat in the chair RJ offered and muttered a "Thanks." She was silent for a few mintues, not knowing what to say. FInally, she blurted out the one question that had been on her mind since she first met RJ. "Why do you care? Why do you care what's happened to me?" She looked at him imploringly. She wanted a real answer, or this was just going to keep driving her insane. |

RJ sat indian style on his bed, waiting for Cassie to say something. He would have started a conversation, but he could tell that something was on her mind, so he let her have control of the conversation. He expected her to ask for advice about something, or appologize for tackling him in the hallway, or explain the scratches on her arms and legs. But he wasn't expecting her to ask that question. He looked away as he thought of a good answer. Every situation is different. He began. But sometime you'll run into a person who has a similar situation. He shrugged. He had to prove that he could be trusted. He tugged at his shirt until he pulled the collar down enough to reveal his collar bone. There was a purple scar all across the right side. Keeping the scar out for her to see, he continued talking. I know what it's like to have scars. I a lot of my own. |

Cassie listened quietly as he began to explain. "I doubt it's similar..." she retorted, but let him continue. As he moved his collar down to expose a large purple scar, Cassie leaned forward curiously. Slowly, she stood and walked closer to him, tentatively reaching out to touch the scar lightly with her thin fingers. "Who did this to you?" she asked quietly. She traced the scar, imagining the how bad the wound must have been in the first place to leave this kind of mark. |

RJ followed Cassie's finger with his eyes as she traced his scar. He thought back to when he got the scar in the first place. The hit was so brutal that at first he thought that the bone had split in two. He let out a small sigh as his mind refocused on the present. My mother... That's why I'm living here. My dad is dead and my mom thinks that I'm responsible, so she saw it fit to ... He paused. Beat me every day. |

Cassie frowned and then winced slightly. Sitting down next to him, and shook her head. "Gosh, I'm sorry." she breathed. "I've had my fair share of beatings, but none from someone I loved. I just didn't even know my parents long enough for all that... If I had, my dad might have hurt me, but he wouldn't have meant to..." she stopped there. She still didn't want to talk about this. She now traced one of her own scars on her arm absent mindedly. It was a long, jagged one, and fairly recent. She didn't remember how she got it either... "If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your dad?" |

RJ watched again as Cassie traced over one of her own scars. He looked at her directly when as she talked about her own father and his mind began reeling with questions, but it seemed to be a touchy subject for her, so he let it slide. He leaned over to the nightstand and turned on a small lamp. There was an unframed photograph of a man who looked like RJ leaning against the lamp. RJ looked at the picture silently for several moments. He got a phone call at his job one day. He began, failing to make eye contact with Cassie. His wife, my mom, was in labor. He was excused from work so he climbed into his red pickup truck and began driving to the hospital. He got on the phone with my mom for a minute, and the last thing he said before they hung up was, "I can't wait to see him." A drunk semi truck driver was heading in the opposite direction and lost control. He paused. My mom got a phone call at the hospital ... No more dad. He sighed. I was born two hours later. |

Cassie was speechless for several seconds. A thousands thoughts were trying to make themselves heard in her head. "I'm so sorry... You never even knew him." She paused for a secind, remembering what he had said before. "Wait, so your mom blames you? She blames you being born for his death?" she asked, outraged. That wasn't right, in any sense. She stood and paced for a minute, watching him. She couldn't stay still when she was angry, and the injustice here really pissed her off. |
