Let me make sure I'm doing it right . . . I have a blank layer. I move it to the top, fill it, change it to "soft light," and . . . then make it more translucent? Is that right? |

Erm.....you confused me o.O lolz If what you're saying is that same as going to Layer >> Add New Fill Layer....choosing a yellow color of some sort then setting it's blending mode to soft light, then yeah o.O I'm putting up a coloring tut right now in the tut section so you can check that out and see what I mean with all this coloring business lolz |

The blending is fine but the image quality is meh. You either need a more higher quality image or you over sharpened o.O |

You can use different textures to make things more interesting, alot of people just erase the texture that is on the face, or major parts. Text...hmmmm it would depend on how much you wanted to put on probably. |

if you're going to leave the text like that, it's fine where it is.....as for backgrounds being more interesting, you could always duplicate your blend layer and set it on blur and then erase the part over the face like i did for matt's banner his background is blurred out. Also what kate said, textures are a wonderful tool and I believe moni mentioned coloring. There are several tutorials that can be found here on how to do coloring and I belive Des made one with a pretty cool moon texture so yeah.... |

For me the text placement really isn't that great. You don't want to really put text in corners like that. Here's something that may help, don't think of the text as something separate from the graphic. Think of it as another picture, start thinking about text placement when you're placing your pictures. And also try blending the pics closer together and maybe all off to one side or all center. having too much space between pics in a small blend calls for complicated text placement *nods* |
