The Mortal Coil CHAPTER ONE “Jason! Anna! It’s 7:00, you need to get your things together and get ready for school!” The kids didn’t hear her. She figured she’d give them another 15 minutes. She was nervous. She needed to calm down. She had these moments of tension, she hesitated to call them panic attacks because she could still function; but this feeling was a nuisance nonetheless. She walked into the kitchen. There still wasn’t anyone up. She’d yell at them in a little while. She walked up to the back door in front of the garage; where she had placed her purse last night. She dug around for a little while and got out one of the mini bottles of vodka she had been saving. She thought to enjoy the drink, but she needed to go yell at the kids pretty soon, and Harry would be up pretty soon, so she shot-gunned it. She had gotten good about hiding her drunkenness, her tolerance for alcohol being something she took great pride in. She figured she could sneak another drink in a little later in the morning before she went to work. The kids still weren’t up. She went back into the bedroom to go talk to Harry about a concern she had about their oldest son. She sat by the bedside as he still lay there. “Are the kids up?” “No, they’re probably still asleep.” “I thought Anna had a project for Biology that she had to get to school early to work on.” “Yeah; I’ll have to kick their butts.” “When do you have to be at work?” “In about an hour, I’m gonna get up in a minute here.” “Alright, I’ll go take the kids to school then.” “Ok, I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help, Alli.” “It’s fiiiiiine. Say, I’m a bit worried about Jason.” “Why is that?” “His grades are dropping and girls at his school have accused him of stalking.” Harry got up slightly, not quite enough to where he was fully awake, but awake enough to where it was clear this bothered him, and looked at her intently. “Holy shit. What are we going to do?” “I don’t know, I’m really worried, I think he might be retarded.” “Should we get him checked?” “No, no. There’s a woman that works in special ed. at his school that has already agreed to work with him.” “You sure this’ll be good for him?” “Well, clearly he needs it, right?” “I mean, I guess. Well, whatever, we’ll see how this goes.” “Yeah. I think it’ll be good for him. He’ll learn how to behave like a human.” “Yeah, I better go get ready.” “I’ll go roust the kids and get them in the car, then.” She left the bedroom and began to walk upstairs to retrieve Jason and Anna. Jason was early into his brooding teenager years, as such she always struggled with getting him up and ready to go. Anna wasn’t quite there yet, she was only 10, not even in middle school. “Jason! Anna! Time’s up! Get up! We gotta go to school!” “Jesus Christ, mom! Don’t yell like that!” “Hey! Language!” She headed into Jason’s room, there were papers strewn all over the place. She could barely stand the sight of it. “Are you ready?” she asked. “No!” he said with a snarl. “Well, get ready, we need to be at school at…….” She was trying to think of the time, she wondered if it was the booze that was making her do this. “8:00” Jason corrected her. “Hey, get over that attitude, young man. It’ll get you in trouble.” Jason scoffed, and Anna poked her mother in the side. “Yes?” “I’m ready to go.” “Very good! I wish other kids in the house were this well-behaved.” Anna looked satisfied with herself. She was a good kid. She always was really. Jason still wasn’t moving, she went in there to yell at him some more. “Jason! Go fix your sister breakfast!” “Why can’t you?” “Because you’re going to!” Jason called Anna and headed downstairs to pour a bowl of cereal for the both of them. She told them she was going to go get the car ready. She still had ten minutes, she complimented herself for how she handled that. She went to the car, a Honda Odyssey, unlocked it, pulled a bag out of her glove compartment, and pulled out a bottle of malt liquor. She figured she could sneak a few shots in before Jason and Anna came out. She popped the cap and took a good swig. Immediately she felt a lift. She had another five minutes, so she took another shot. Jason and Anna were going to come out in a little bit, so she put the booze away in her bag, trying really hard not to spill but she was struggling. She saw Jason and Anna coming out through the rear view mirror so she tried her best to look normal. She put her key in, and got the car running. “Wow, mom, you only just now got the car running?” “Quiet, Jason.” She started the car and got on the road. She had a tough time driving straight getting out of the neighborhood, the kids didn’t seem to notice at first. She got to one of the crossroads, and it was during the morning rush hour so there were cars lined up to get where they needed to go. |

Its not the whole chapter; this is still very much a work in progress. This is a black comedy I'm working on. |
