i can actually understand why people may actually like her music - and there's millions of those - but it's just so amusing she keeps on recycling the same old formula and yet her audience remains obsessed with her. i mean, look at those song titles! one can tell what this album sounds like without even hearing it once.

hey, riv, is this music she's making a common genre in irish culture? cause frankly in my ears it doesn't sound too irish folk. but then i might not be really familiar with traditional irish harmonies executed by using cheap new age synths.

how old is she anyway? should be pushing 50 while ridiculously rich, too.

:lol2:

She's 54 and filthy rich indeed! Yeah, she's a "guilty pleasure" of mine and I totally get why people are amused by her and her music. I still really like it though. She has the same style throughout her entire career, but I think the key to her longevity is that there's a long gap between each album, so even though the music never really changes style, her fans don't get too much of it, so they're always happy to have her back.

Nah, her music isn't remotely like traditional Irish folk music. She does incorporate some Celtic elements though, but it's very much in the New Age genre, rather than authentic Irish traditional. She's not even really that popular over here. Her main markets seem to be the US and Asia. I read somewhere that she's the 6th biggest selling female artist of all time!

I thought she'd died in her sleep. During the making of the first album.

The same applies to all standards, vocal pop, traditional pop, adult contemporary, new age, adult alternative and jazz singers. They do the same abysmal MOR shit over and over and over again for decades and the fans still eat it up. Such people typically pathologically only listen to those types of music and have their faves for life.

In what way? What about that comment can be refuted? And how it is any different than the comment I quoted?

"Abysmal MOR shit"? In your opinion.

Also, I do not "pathologically only listen to" that kind of music. I enjoy it for what it is. Melodic, soothing, warm music. It's not meant to change the fucking world or be "cool" or edgy.

Bashing Enya and people who enjoy her music is every bit as tired and clichéd as you think her music is. Get over yourself.

I find the musical snobbery in here from some, a bit galling. You're all Madonna fans for fuck sake. To many people, the artist you love makes vaccuous pop ditties and nothing else. You'd think you'd have a little more of an open-mind as to what constitutes good music.

Anyway, thankfully I like what I like and don't only follow artists that it's deemed ok to enjoy.

She sticks to the same sound, yes. The melodies are different. If people don't actually bother to listen to her stuff in any sort of detailed way, I can see how they could be so wrong though.

In the meantime, keep holding out for that Enya electo-pop album that some of you are clearly holding out for for some reason.

Please, Riverwide, I'm in no knowledge of what Enya is about,
can you post the song that defines her? (I'm in shock that you love her, then I respect, and should maybe rethink)

And not the song that we all know.

The song that defines her? Her most famous one is Orinoco Flow, but my favourites are Book of Days, Storms in Africa, Marble Halls and Caribbean Blue.
