Yay!! A new song! ![]() The track-listing for the forthcoming greatest hits album, "Ultimate Pet Shop Boys" has now been finalised. It includes 25 years of hits from 1985's "West End girls" to 2009's "Love etc." and concludes with a new song, "Together", written and recorded this month. The full track-listing is: West End girls Suburbia It's a sin What have I done to deserve this? Always on my mind Heart Domino dancing Left to my own devices Being boring Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you) Go West Before Se a vida é (That's the way life is) New York City boy Home and dry Miracles I'm with stupid Love etc. Together The new song was written and produced with former Xenomania staff member Tim Powell and will also be released as a single. The release date will be announced shortly. "Ultimate Pet Shop Boys" will be released on November 1st. It was originally proposed by EMI to celebrate 25 years since the release of Pet Shop Boys' first hit, "West End girls". A special edition (full details in the earlier news story below) includes a DVD of Pet Shop Boys' performances on BBC TV and also their Glastonbury Festival performance from June this year. |

It's a fairly ropey tracklist. Some essential stuff is left off, only to be replaced by fairly second-rate songs. Oh well, I'm just thrilled that we're getting a new song! |

Popjustice review of the new single! What's the new Pet Shop Boys single like, then? 'Together' is the new Pet Shop Boys single. We first heard it at the start of last week and it sounded a bit tremendous but we didn't want to rush into a review. You know how these things are - you hear a song, you think it's some sort of epoch-defining masterpiece, and the next thing you know it's three weeks later and all you're left with is a fairly listenable, three-star-rated moment of alrightness clogging up your iTunes library. (In other words, 'Happy' by Leona Lewis.) Now the dust has settled, we can confirm that while epoch-defining might be pushing things a little 'Together' actually is - as we initially suspected - really rather good. It's forward-looking rather than retro-sounding tune that feels like a proper 2010 Pet Shop Boys single. Soundwise it's a bit of a clattering rave banger, sounding a little like Pet Shop Boys produced by Tony Lamezma, the spooky Xenomania employee who made a good name for himself throwing kitchen sinks at songs like Girls Aloud's 'Biology'. There is a good reason for the Lamezmalike sound, which is that the single is produced by ex-Xenomania (exnomania?) musician Tim Powell, who's also responsible for the new Ed Drewett single 'Champagne Lemonade', and was closely acquainted with (ie actually was) Tony Lamezma during his time at Xenomania Towers. The single is being released to coincide with* the band's new best of album 'Ultimate'. 'Ultimate' is out at the start of next month and it's a 1CD compilation of some of the duo's best bits. It kind of makes sense in a post-Brits Outstanding Achievement, post-Glasto renaissance, pre-Christmas sort of way, and there's a really good bonus DVD on the special edition. You need to be quite careful when listening to new songs off best of albums because there's always the chance that at some point during the single or album campaign the act will turn around and go "oh actually this is our farewell single, thanks 'The Fans' but we're off now byeeeee". Would 'Together' be a good farewell single from Pet Shop Boys? No, because we refuse to entertain the idea that there could ever be any such thing as a 'good' Pet Shop Boys farewell single, BUT: 1. It is a stomper. Tragically if you would like to know precise beats-per-minute info we are not much use because we haven't quite been able to get our heads around it all, due to the fact that (fanfare): 2. IT'S GOT A 3/4 BEAT. (Waltz have we done to deserve this etc etc etc.) 3. Finally, and most importantly of all when considering whether or not this would be a good farewell single, the chorus seems to be about a loveular relationship but could also be about the relationship between Neil and Chris: "together's amazing, together we're blazing, together we'll go all the way". The middle eight contains another oh-dear-this-all-sounds-a-bit-final line, in the shape of "everything's easy in this state of mind, the world starts to fade as we leave it behind". We don't actually think this is a farewell single at all, incidentally. This said, we haven't contacted Neil and Chris to ask them to clarify in case they come back and say 'well actually yes'. It is better not to know about these things until they actually happen. IN SUMMARY: Amazing. * Not really a massive concidence to be fair http://www.popjustice.com/#ixzz11Wi67lYN |

Yay! 2 other new recordings in the single bundle! Pet Shop Boys' new single, "Together", will be released by Parlophone on November 29th on two CDs and digital download. As well as "Together" the track-listings will include: * "Glad all over" - a version of the early 60s hit by The Dave Clark Five which Pet Shop Boys performed in Chris's home town of Blackpool this summer. The song has become a victory anthem for Blackpool FC which rose to the Premiere League this year. This new studio version was arranged and produced by Pet Shop Boys and Tim Powell. * "I cried for us" - Neil sang this song by the late Kate McGarrigle, mother of Rufus Wainwright, at her memorial concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London in June in an arrangement by Pet Shop Boys. Chris and Neil produced this studio version which was mixed by Pete Gleadall. * "Together (extended version)" - remixed by Tim Powell. Dance remixes of "Together" will also be made available. Full format details will be on this site when they are finalised. A promotional video for the song is being shot later this month in Eastern Europe. "Together" was written and produced by Pet Shop Boys and Tim Powell at the beginning of September and will also be included as the final track of Pet Shop Boys' new greatest hits album, "Ultimate", to be released on November 1st. (The artwork shown here is for the radio promo not the commercial single.) |

Good to know I'm not alone. I think this collection was more Parlophone's call as opposed to PopArt and Discography so Neil and Chris probably just threw out an effortless track. |

Definitely. They were on The Graham Norton Show last night and they performed just one song, "It's A Sin". I think that says it all really! |
