He used to give me roses... I wish he could again... But that was on the outside... And things were different then...

OMG! It sounds like my life story!

Loved that show! Especially the uber-baddy Joan "The Freak" Ferguson!

All the fags and fanny lickers used to obsess over it around the time I was at Uni! :uberfag:

I ADORED "Cell Block H". So many favourite bits to choose from, but my personal highlights were always when Lizzie would get drunk.

In fact, thinking on it now, I am turning into the old lag!

The show did have a habit of killing off the top dogs, though. They could never just escape and be done with it - they always ended up dead. Even the (I'm not worthy) Bea Smith eventually died in a fire.

Lizzie was my favourite too. Her endless grog-making schemes were hilarious!

Watching Prisoner Cell Block H (or simply 'Prisoner' for purists) was my self-imposed reward for a night's A-level studying back in the 1950s 1980s when I was a lad.

The third 'celebrity' I ever interviewed as an 18-year-old (me, not her) was Vera 'Vinegar Tits' Bennett who was on the promotional trail for the travelling Prisoner Cell Block H musical (in itself, a visual and aural delight that could have rivaled the best works of Sondheim)

Vinegar Tits was both charming and endearing, yet maintained a steely eye and a firm lesbionic handshake.

Oh Vera was fabulous and so deliciously evil. :sadbitch:

One of my fave plots was when Lizzie, Bea and the gang launched an escape whilst performing in the prison panto!!! :lol2:

OMG! It took a fiercely heterosexual show like Prisoner to bring Johnnox out of his posting exile.

How BUTCH! :chuckle:

Doreen was a personal favourite of mine, particularly the actresses ability to say a line of dialogue like it was being fed into her earpiece at the same moment she was delivering it.

And of course Lizzie, a woman who looked 100 years old and remained looking a 100 years old throughout her prison tenure.

And of course The Freak, one of the best characters ever to grace a TV drama since Shughie McFee, the Chef in Crossroads.

I will always be disappointed, however, that I missed the very last episode of the final series. I believe The Freak may have had a sad but fitting demise but alas, I forgot to programme the video recorder for it.

Instead, I go to sleep at night dreaming wistfully of my own conclusion for this show.

How or when did she leave it? I can't remember how she left!

She left about a year into the show, when she went to be the 'Guv of Barnhurst.

Unlike you, I am clearly a TRUE fan of the show and can even remember her parting words to Bea Smith:

"We'll meet again, Smith. And if it's at Barnhurst, I'll make sure they roll out the red carpet for you."

They were always being threatened with being sent to Barhurst weren't they? I'd love a spell in Wentworth. It always looks like great craic!

The "threats" to send them away to Barnhurst were comical because it was supposed to a minimum security prison -despite the fact that the likes of uber toughie Marie Winter were there!

But, I concur, Wentworth looked like a laugh and a half. All you do is stand around all day having a smoko, fold the odd sheet, and then every once in a while, run down the corridor with two other inmates, shrieking your head off, all in the name of a "riot"

Plus you got to keep rocks as pets and had numerous opportunities to shag visiting electricians.

What more could anyone want?

I guess this is another one of Riv's favourite series you only can enjoy when you're over 35.
