Actress Nicolette Sheridan is to leave her role in Desperate Housewives, US network ABC has confirmed.

No details of when the star will exit the series have been released, nor is it known how she will be written out.

The 45-year-old, who was born in the UK, plays troublemaker Edie Britt in the show, who is often at odds with the other regular residents.

At the end of a previous series, Britt left only to return when the show moved forward five years.

Rekindled romance

Before landing the part in Desperate Housewives in 2004, Sheridan was best known for starring in 1990s soap opera Knots Landing.

Until last year she was engaged to singer Michael Bolton, but they announced their split in August.

The pair first started dating in 1992 and spent five years together.

They rekindled their romance in 2005 before getting engaged the following year.

The recorded a duet together, The Second Time Around, which appeared on the 2006 album Bolton Swings Sinatra.

They'll probably have that nasty husband of hers killing her. Or maybe a suicide because she can't have her true love McCluskey.

awww, I'm gonna miss Edie. She usually had the best comedic moments compared to the annoying Susan.

I'm surprised. She was SOOOOOOO lucky to get that role after 12 years in TV movie /straight to DVD hell.

I wonder why she thinks it's a good idea to leave one of the top rated shows on TV.

Nooo I love Susan. She's not the best (that would be Lynette) but she's amazing.
