Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is working on a TV series based on his film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, according to reports.

The film-maker is producing an English language pilot for the US Fox network, says the Hollywood Reporter.

Grey's Anatomy writer Mimi Schmir has been hired to pen the hour-long show.

The show will be "a suburban drama about a group of women who have known each other for a long time," she told the industry publication.

First released in 1988, Almodovar's original film starred Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas.

Set over a two-day time frame, it told of a voice actress abandoned by her lover who becomes embroiled in a series of farcical situations.

Another of Almodovar's movies, All About My Mother, was adapted into a London stage play in 2007.

His latest work, Broken Embraces, had its premiere in Madrid in March and will be screened next month at the Cannes Film Festival.

I'd like to see him make a movie version of Loose Women.

I'd be very interested to see it. He's probably my favourite director.
