Box-office heaven for 'Angels and Demons'

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — "Angels and Demons" -- sequel to the hit 2006 thriller "The Da Vinci Code" -- topped weekend box office sales across North America, edging out last week's winner 'Star Trek,' according to industry projections on Sunday.

Directed by Ron Howard and with Tom Hanks reprising his starring turn, the thriller took in some 48 million dollars, five million more than number two "Star Trek," at 43 million dollars, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Superhero spinoff "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which claimed the best debut of the year two weekends earlier with 87 million dollars, this weekend netted just 14.8 million for a distant third place finish.

In fourth place was romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, earning 6.8 million dollars in its third week.

Superstar singer Beyonce's taut thriller "Obsessed" slipped one spot to fifth with 4.6 million dollars, while youthful fantasy "17 Again," starring US teen idol Zac Efron, also fell one place to sixth, with a 3.4 million dollar take.

"Monsters vs Aliens," an animated tale of a rag-tag group of monsters who save the world from destruction came in seventh with three million dollars in receipts.

In the eighth spot was "The Soloist," an inspirational musical tale based on a true story and starring Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx, which scored 2.4 million dollars in ticket sales in its fourth weekend.

Comic caper "Next Day Air," about a bungled cocaine delivery and the efforts to retrieve it, was ninth with 2.3 million dollars in receipts, while Disney's "Earth" documentary claimed 10th place with 1.7 million dollars.

"Heaven"? Hardly. It was wayyy down on the opening for The DaVinci Code and only slightly better reviewed.

The smaller gross is only to be expected though. The Angels and Demons book has only been read by half of the readers of the DaVinci Code which would effect numbers.

Secondly unlike the 1st film the catholic church hasn't commented on this one except to say that it's harmless, fluffy entertainment. They condemned the 1st film which raised the controversy factor.

Thirdly the 'DaVinci Code' film was so disappointing it put people off the 2nd one.

All in all $48 million is pretty respectable.

Oh it's not bad by any means, but it's not exactly gangbusters either. I wonder how it'll hold up. Anyone in here seen it yet?

I saw Angels and Demons last Friday with my dad who was just interested in seeing aeriel shots of Vatican City :lmao: . I hated The DaVinci Code, horrible stuff. But I left the theater last friday really enjoying this one. Good entertainment value, good suspence. Better than DaVinci on every count. All in all 3.5 out of 5.

I forgot how much I'm into Ewan. :shy:

Final figures puts Angels and 46 million which is only 3 million better than Star Trek's second week. Nobody saw this coming. They were hoping for at least 50 million. It will do great though overseas. As for the course ahead, I doubt it will have great legs considering most see this as a sequal or part of an installment regardless of the order of the books.
