Popjustice Song of the Day

'Starlight'

By Sophie Ellis-Bextor

It is so much easier being a Sophie Ellis-Bextor fan once you accept that she is never ever going to have another hit single.

Once you learn to live with that fact, and once you are able to leave behind questions like 'will Radio 1 play this?' (NO AND NEITHER WILL RADIO 2), 'will she promote it properly?' (SHE'LL DO HER BEST BUT NOBODY'S REALLY INTERESTED) and 'will it get into the Top 10?' (NO), all you are left with is one question: 'is the song any good?'.

And the answer here is 'not as good as some of her other songs but generally yes it is a really enjoyable listen and her voice is rather nice as per usual'.

Popjustice has a lot of nerve. You could remove Sophie's name and substitute it with "Britney", easily. However, they praise Britney like she's the second coming.

Well, no. Britney's song would at least have a decent tune. This is just piss.

I imagine Sophie on some TV show in Russia as a judge next year... There's Janice Dickenson on Russian Top Model already. Poor thing.
PJ had some fun which is sooo true

Sophie Ellis-Bextor sets up record label

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has announced that she has set up her own record label.

The singer, who is gearing up for the release of her long-delayed fourth album Make A Scene, said that she decided to release the LP independently after her label repeatedly shelved the project.

"Make A Scene is finally making its way into the third dimension," she told WOTYOUGOT. "It's been recorded for a little while now, but I left my old label and I've set up my own label. I'm doing this by myself, which is exciting!"

The 'Not Giving Up On Love' star also revealed that the LP will be out in Russia on April 18, six weeks ahead of its UK release.

Discussing whether she feared her UK fans would illegally download the record, she insisted: "To be perfectly honest, what we've achieved... getting the album to fruition is a big achievement, and I'm just thrilled it's going to be out there.

"I don't feel too strongly about how they're getting hold of it, I'm just glad the fans will get to hear it."

Make A Scene is out June 6, preceded by the single 'Starlight' on May 30.

Sounds like someone has resigned themselves to their fate. It's a bit of a shame. I still think she has a nice voice and has the potential to be a semi-interesting pop star. Her choice of songs is usually decent ... but she always works with producers who give them this uniform, polite dance production, when they're screaming out to be club bangers.

Couldn't agree more. She has a very good and very recognisable voice, which is such a great thing in a pop star. She also has a good personality and striking looks, and yet she just hasn't realised her full potential somehow. As you say, her music is just too "polite" for its own good. It's a shame indeed.

I only listened to it once, but it didn't do much for me. Her songs have a way of sneaking up on me though. I must try it again.

And yeah, I'm looking forward to the album too. Only a few more days!

TickTock once again decides to bring up Britney's name for no reason even though apparently he doesn't care. How utterly petrifying and sad at the same time.
