Gurls And A Goddess Put EMI At No. 1 On European Charts

July 15, 2010 - Global

By Paul Sexton, London

In a double victory for EMI, Kylie Minogue's "Aphrodite" (Parlophone) makes a No.1 debut on Billboard's European Albums chart while "California Gurls," (Virgin) by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg starts a second week atop Hot 100 Singles.

Minogue's new set leads the way in the United Kingdom (on sales of 79,000, according to the Official Charts Co) and debuts at No. 2 in Switzerland, No. 3 in Germany, France and Austria, No. 4 in the Netherlands and No. 5 in Ireland. It also climbs 3-2 in Spain and 11-3 and 6-4 in the Belgian regions of Wallony and Flanders respectively. The Australian star's last album "X" debuted at No. 5 on the pan-European chart in late 2007; four years earlier, "Body Language" opened at No. 9.

aphrodite also debuts at #8 in canada

I love 'Mighty Rivers'

Better than the banal tracks like 'Closer' or 'Better Than Today'

Most of the tracks, hoever, I am quite enjoying. The title track also wants to make me barf.... tacky and faggy

OMG I love "Closer"! That harpsicord-y production really makes it! Better Than Today has such a strong pop melody too!

more likely it'll be dropping rappidly in the coming weeks. it'd be quite unexpected if it has any legs on its own, at least until the second single comes to the rescue. in the long run, i expect its international sales to match those of x, unless the tour gives it a big push. its uk fortunes will be interesting to track, though. with x selling close to 500k, a result below at least double platinum should at this point be considered a commercial failure.

Seriously, who does her "choreography"? It's sooo dated, early 90s, TOTP stuff. Bless her!

it reminds me of the CLASSIC wouldn't change a thing/never too late video routines

as in the subject of early 90s TOTP, let's just take a brief moment to appreciate the utter joy of this monumentary kylie performance. take note on the frenzily choreographed last minute or so

:lmao: She really is a spectacularly bad dancer. No wonder she doesn't even TRY anymore. She's better off.

:lmao: She's DIRE. She has no sense of music or rhythm at all. Some idiots say that Madonna isn't a natural dancer, well THIS is what it looks like when someone isn't a natural dancer. Madonna has such energy and fire and passion and sweat in her dancing. You can tell she genuinely feels the music. Kylie can literally *just about* go through the motions. It's mortifying!

it really is unfair to compare kylie's dancing skills to those of madonna's as the latter is undoubtedly a unique stage dancer and we're all aware of that. kylie does know how to work the stage, it's just that she's blatantly uncomfortable when strictly choreographed
