I never understood the hatred people had for the album. TONS of artists have done the 80's throwback thing, but very few have actually done the "wasn't this on the Flashdance soundtrack?" thing, and I loved it. It was pure 80's cheese and I loved the album.
I agree. I think it's a strong album. Full of very melodic songs and retro production with a modern twist. If Madonna had made that album instead of Hard Candy, most of us would still be wetting ourselves over it.

They were never huge sellers, but they still sold well. The last album sold *far* less than their previous efforts, that's why it was seen as such a flop.

People just didn't realize that an alternative act like Goldfrapp weren't going to maintain commercial success. They were arguably never meant to.
The interesting thing is that the record company had clearly lost faith in them as unit shifters even before "Head First" came out. Alison has spoken of the vastly reduced promotional and touring budget they'd been given. And the two videos (ignoring the performance clip for "Believer") look like shit (despite some good ideas behind both of them). The combined budget probably wouldn't have covered the catering bill on the "Happiness" clip.

As much as Alison would protest this, she clearly did buy into the "let's try and be massive" mindset at one point. She went on the kids TV treadmill to promote "Black Cherry" and, especially, "Supernature". Either it ended up not sitting well with her or she realised that it was never going to happen.

Personally, I think "Head First" didn't sell too well (although it was hardly a disaster) because, while it is true that they didn't have the "cool" vote anymore, it was their first truly pop album, and it got a bit lost. "Black Cherry" and "Supernature" were twisted disco for adults. But I could imagine The Saturdays singing some of the tracks off "Head First". (Not well, mind.)

I am still stunned that "Alive" bombed so badly, however. It got decent support from Radio 2, and I thought that would be enough to punt it near the Top 40 and give the album a minor shot in the arm. But, no. It's almost as if that track never happened.

Yeah, I liked Head First; I still play it a lot.

Studio version of "Melancholy Sky" is streaming here: http://goldfrapp.us/

Apparently it's for sale now on US iTunes too for some reason. Someone purchase it for us!

What a gorgeous song. The production and instrumentation are sublime! Those saxophones... :drama:

How was it looking back over the singles ?
Pretty good really. I like them all and I think it's a nice thing to put a body of work we've done over a period of time in an album. Apart from [Grammy-nominated March 2010 single] Rocket, which I sort of....don't like very much (laughs). What's wrong with it ? What's bloody right with it. Oh my god, we've opened a can of worms now. I think with things like Ooh La La or Strict Machine, although there were poppy elements and a fun-ness to them, Rocket was a step too far in a direction that was maybe too poppy, or something. That's why we (hisses) hate it.

It's good they realise Rocket wasn't that good. I was scared they were gonna go Madonna's road.

"Yellow Halo" is utterly, utterly wondrful. But it's one of those rare song that works better as an edit than a full length version.
