They're now being accused of stealing the melody of "Viva La Vida". Check out the comparisons in this link. They are similar, but I doubt very much it was stolen.

I'm on the fourth play of this album and I'm kind of divided. What I like, I love, what I don't like, leaves me cold. Its half and half. Their last two albums I thought were flawless. This one just doesn't do it for me like it's predecessors.
I kind of feel the same way. There are some fantastic melodies on there, but there are also some tracks which do absolutely nothing for me. In particular I don't like 'Lost' - though I love the acoustic version of it.

Yeah, I agree with you about "Lost". It's a wasted opportunity. The album version is clunky and leaden, and goes absolutely nowhere. Definitely one that I find myself skipping now.

I do like Coldplay and they are good live but Chris Martin is truly an annoying little pussy.

Plus he's a vegan so he thoroughly deserves a good slap.

Coldplay made their live return tonight (June 16) playing tracks from new album ’Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’ at London’s Brixton Academy.

The show, which was broadcast live on Radio 1, is the first of three free shows the band are playing following their fourth album's release last week (June 12), with gigs set to take place in Barcelona on June 17 and New York on June 23.

Taking to the stage at 8.45pm (BST) the band kicked off with the new album's instrumental opener 'Life In Technicolor', before launching to former NME covermount track, single 'Violet Hill'.

Without pausing to talk the band, wearing the French revolutionary-inspired jackets they wore on NME's recent cover, then dipped into their back catalogue playing the likes of 'Clocks' and 'In My Place'.

Finally before 'Viva La Vida' frontman Chris Martin addressed the crowd as tymphany drums were being set up.

"We were in Germany the other day and an interviewer said to us 'what does an English person do when they've won the World Cup and the European Championships? Turn off their Playstation'," recounted the singer. "We said that's true but we've written this song which you sing when you know you're going to lose, or maybe 'We Are The Champions', to get yourself through."

Ahead of fellow new track 'Chinese Sleep Chant' the singer joked about the fact the band's live return had been a free ticket give away.

"I know there have been complaints about the ticket price," he dead panned. "What can I say we're money grabbing whores!"

A trumpet-free version of 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face' followed with Martin suggesting the intro sounded like Radiohead's '2+2=5'.

"Sorry you shouldn't talk about plagiarism when you're live on Radio 1," he joked. "Ignore that!"

Later on Martin paused 'Trouble' mid-song to ponder his future.

"Wasn't that a seamless crossover?" he asked the crowd of the switch between songs. "In years to come when the band split up and I'm doing a piano turn on a cross channel ferry you can say to me 'Chris I remember when you used to be a pop star, you used to do great crossovers between songs' and I'll say thank you! What a ferry journey that will be!"

Wrapping up their set with 'Strawberry Swing', Martin declared, "You're the most intelligent crowd in the world, thank you, see you in 35 seconds!"

Coldplay duly returned for their encore performing from the venue's balcony, playing an acoustic version of 'Yellow'.

Next Martin declared: "We're going to do something super extra double special which I've been looking forward to, please welcome to sing lead vocals our drummer Will Champion.

After the sticksman fronted an acoustic version of The Pogues' 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God', the band returned to Brixton's stage to play 'Fix You'.

They then wrapped up the show firing red, white and blue confetti into the crowd during 'Lovers In Japan'.

Coldplay played:

'Life In Technicolor'
'Violet Hill'
'Clocks'
'In My Place'
'Viva La Vida'
'Chinese Sleep Chant'
'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face'
'42'
'Square One'
'Trouble'
'Lost!'
'Strawberry Swing'
'Yellow'
'If I Should Fall From Grace With God'
'Fix You'
'Lovers In Japan'

I just had my first 2 listenings of the album and I concur completely with Johnnox....'X & Y' was much better than the new one...but hopefully it will grow on me...

in some forums they also state that 'Viva La Vida' is very similar to Alizee's big hit 'J'en ai Marre'

Riv - I love Cemeteries of London, the first half and last bit of 42, Lovers In Japan, Yes and Viva La Vida. My fave track so far is Lost!

The rest leave me unstirred.

I think I might be overdosing on Coldplay today.

I listened to to it on the way to work on my ipod, I'm currently at IPC working for Nuts and they are playing the album. In the open plan office behind us, Loaded is playing it, and I just walked to the toilet and the NME office, also open plan, is listening to it. I can hear three songs playing at the same time.

Have finally given this a listen. On first play, I like it a lot more than "X and Y". Its sound is far more expansive and its bollocks are bigger. I couldn't really pick out any particular song that stood out for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the little instrumental at the start.

I'll start listening to it properly this week.

Yeah it's great. I love how it reprises in the last track, with lyrics and stuff. A nice "bookend" effect.

I bought the LP/CD combo today at Best Buy, for $15 it's a steal to get it both on vinyl and cd together.

BTW, does anyone else think the drummer is hot? I guess I have a thing for 30-ish stocky balding guys with facial hair, but whatever it is, he does it for me.

The drummer is INCREDIBLY handsome. Especially in the "Speed of Sound" video when he's pounding away on those drums.

Ooooooo ...

Yeah, Will Champion is very attractive. He has a lovely speaking voice too. Very calm and intelligent guy. He sang a song at their Brixton gig the other night and his singing voice wasn't bad either!

as one of the few American posters on this board, I come here with excitement.

VIVA LA VIDA IS THE #1 SINGLE IN AMERICA THIS WEEK!!!!!!!!!

About fucking time something that isn't r&b or hip hop hit #1. And they did it all with iTunes because US radio is still hung up on hip hop (Chris Martin's track with Kanye has more airplay this week) that they won't even give it a chance. So this is a huge "fuck you" both to Billboard (who sets rules in favor of urban artists) and the US radio industry who won't support Coldplay because they aren't rap.

Wow! That's incredible. I knew it was huuuuge on iTunes, but never thought it would hit #1 due to lack of airplay!
