It's not doing much for me at all. It's all rather blah. The melody isn't a patch on their best stuff and the production is like a standard album filler for them. There doesn't seem to be anything special about it at all, as if it was a leftover from their previous two albums.

I hope it's a grower!

Yeah, usually I love their stuff as soon as I hear it, like I did with those songs and most of their new singles. This just sounds incredibly mediocre for such a great band.

I like it (after about 15 listens it's grown a lot) but it doesn't really scream "single" to me.

#3 on US Itunes which isn't bad considering there's been very little buzz about it, unlike how Viva La Vida was promoted on an overplayed iTunes ad which really helped that song.

Coldplay in 2011 is really doing very, very little for me. How does a band that wrote so many fantastic melodies end up coming out with weak, drab songs like these latest ones?

NME review of "Major Minus"

Coldplay, 'Major Minus' - Track Review'
By Luke Lewis
Posted on 23/06/11 at 10:27:41 pm

Sneaky of Coldplay to unveil a new track when almost every music journalist in the country is busy getting sloshed at Glastonbury - but here it is: surprise! The follow-up to 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'.

It's actually taken from the EP of that name, which - cunningly - is released digitally on Sunday June 26, just hours after Coldplay's Glastonbury headline appearance on the Pyramid, when presumably the 'buzz' will be at its peak. Interestingly, it's also 11 years to the day since the release of the band's breakthrough single 'Yellow'.

The timing could be auspicious. You may remember that 'Yellow' was released the Monday after the band's first Glastonbury performance, on the Other Stage in 2000. It was the summer they became huge.

A cynic might point out that 'Every Teardrop...' is no 'Yellow' - in fact it might be Coldplay's least enthusiastically received single to date - but 'Major Minus' is a decent enough B-side, powered by a chunky U2, 'Elevation'-style riff.

Indeed, signs are that Coldplay are becoming more like U2 with every release, their guitars set perennially to "anthemic chime" mode.

However, 'Major Minus' also finds them channeling another of their influences - Radiohead. From the paranoid, finger-pointing lyrics ("They got one eye watching you...") to Martin's wobble-headed, gucci-little-piggy-style falsetto wigout at the end, it's pure Thom Yorke circa 'OK Computer'.

That's no bad thing. This is an addictive, tightly melodic little track, a world away from the self-conscious grandiosity of 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'. You get the impression Coldplay's forthcoming album will find them dialling back the over-reaching ambition, and will see a return to the simpler, more heartfelt charms of 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'.

Time will tell. Meanwhile, the 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' EP will also include another track, 'Move To Mars', which will be unveiled tomorrow.

Coldplay headline Glastonbury Festival on Saturday 25 June.

Coldplay tease details of new album 'Mylo Xyloto'

Coldplay have revealed information on two new songs taken from their forthcoming album.

The band will release their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto on October 24 and have teased details about two of the record's tracks.

In the band's official blog, their roadie, who often writes entries on the band, revealed information on a new track titled 'Up In Flames', which was written before their iTunes gig back in July.

They explained: "Apparently, Chris [Martin] had started the song the previous night, so it was less than 24 hours old at that point.

"It was hypnotic in its simplicity, but devastatingly, achingly gorgeous. The final version has lost none of this and is a masterwork of restraint."

They continued: "It hasn't been crammed with a million ideas and embellishments. Every part is there simply to enhance the emotional impact. I can only predict floods of tears in every quarter."

The roadie also mentioned a second song, which was referred to as 'DLIBYH', saying that it "couldn't be more different".

The group are expected to premiere their new single 'Paradise' on September 12.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin recently admitted that he feels every album the band record could be their last.

Here's the new single. Sounds a bit meh on first couple of listens. I dunno really, it's perfectly pleasant, but their new stuff just doesn't seem to be in the same league as their previous work.

Coldplay reveal Rihanna duet will feature on 'Mylo Xyloto'

Coldplay have revealed that they have recorded a duet with Rihanna for their forthcoming fifth studio album 'Mylo Xyloto'.

The band will release the album on October 24 and have now confirmed that the 'Good Girl Gone Bad' singer features on a track, which is titled 'Princess Of China'.

Singer Chris Martin told The Sun of how the duet came about, saying: The album is designed as a whole piece. It has boy and girl lead characters and top of our list for the girl part was Rihanna, but it took a while to pluck up the courage to ask her. We did a show in Las Vegas and I met her and said, 'Do you think there's any chance?' I was very Hugh Grant-like and spluttering about it.

He continued: She has such an amazing voice and it's so different to mine. When the vocal happened I thought 'Wow, you sound different' but I think that's also because she was singing a different song to what we are used to hearing from her and it is written by a bloke from Devon.

Coldplay debuted the album's second single 'Paradise' earlier this morning (September 12).
