X Factor only brings in 5 million viewers, and all time low for the FOX NETWORK

Just one day after Fox announced it was renewing "The X Factor" U.S. for a third season, the show hit an all-time low in its U.S. ratings in the show's entire history so far.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the new episode that Fox yanked around the schedule three times and finally aired on October 23, 2012 (between 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time) got only 5.71 million U.S. viewers. It was the episode that revealed the Top 16 contestant acts who will perform in the live episodes that begin on November 1, 2012. (Major League Baseball's World Series is pre-empting "X Factor" episodes on October 24, October 25, and October 31, 2012.)

The highest U.S. ratings that an "X Factor" U.S. has gotten for an episode was in 2011, when 12.5 million viewers tuned in for the show's Season 1 finale. In Season 2 so far, "The X Factor" U.S. has been averaging 9 million U.S. viewers per episode. Needless to say, 5.71 million viewers for a new "X Factor" episode is absolutely dismal.

The two-hour episode was originally supposed to air on October 17, 2012, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. Then after Fox botched the airing of that episode, Fox announced that it was moving the episode to October 23, 2012, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. Then it got reduced to a one-hour episode and moved to October 23, 2012, at 9:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time.

Even though the episode was moved to this 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. time slot with just four days' advance notice (and many "X Factor" fans did not know about this sudden change, which no doubt hurt the ratings), the ratings for the episode were even worse than what Fox expected. Sources say that some high-level executives at Fox are now expressing regret for the decision to renew the show for a third season.

As previously reported, "The X Factor" U.S. was on the "chopping block" and was headed for cancellation, mainly because the show was extravagantly spending more money in Season 2 (compared to Season 1), even though ratings for Season 2 were going down. Fox showed its displeasure for the show by botching the new two-hour episode that was originally supposed to air on October 17, 2012, but was instead interrupted by reruns of Fox sitcoms in some time zones, or not shown at all in other time zones where Fox showed a repeat episode of "The X Factor" instead.

All of this was occurring right in the midst of Fox deciding whether or not "The X Factor" U.S. was going to be renewed for a third season. Fox's botched airing of this episode was a "big wake-up call" to "X Factor" creator/executive producer Cowell, according to an insider, because it was an obvious and very public indication of how the show was falling out of favor with Fox.

Over the next few days after that programming fiasco, there was massive turmoil behind the scenes as Cowell and company fought hard and won in convincing Fox to give "The X Factor" U.S. another chance and renew the show for a third season. As previously reported, Fox renewed "The X Factor" U.S. under some major conditions -- chief among them is that the show has to make big spending cuts in Season 3. Another saving grace for "The X Factor" U.S. is that many of Fox's new shows that debuted in September 2012 are bombing in the ratings. "The X Factor" U.S. ratings don't look so bad compared to these new shows' flop ratings.

But it's still a big failure for a new "X Factor" U.S. episode to get only 5.71 million U.S. viewers, considering that "The X Factor" U.S. is most expensive reality show ever.

To make matters worse for "The X Factor" U.S., on October 23, 2012, NBC's "The Voice" U.S. was No. 1 for the night in the 18-to-49-year-old viewer demographic (the most coveted demographic for advertisers), which is the ratings demographic where "The X Factor" U.S. usually excels. On October 23, 2012, "The Voice" got a 4.3 rating/12 share for this demographic, compared to "The X Factor's" measly 2.3 rating/6 share.

Cowell has made no secret about how much he dislikes "The Voice," so it's got to be a big blow to his ego that "The X Factor" is getting clobbered by "The Voice" in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic. And as expected, "The Voice" easily beat "The X Factor" U.S. in total viewers that night, by getting 11.22 million viewers.

Other prime-time network shows that were televised that night got even higher ratings than "The Voice." As expected, the Top 3 shows of the night were consistent Tuesday-night champs CBS's "NCIS" (17.78 million U.S. viewers), CBS's "NCIS: Los Angeles" (16.53 million U.S. viewers) and ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (12.90 million U.S. viewers).

Instead of insulting "The Voice" and overspending on bimbos like Britney Spears and Khloe Kardashian, what Cowell and company need to do is take note of what "The Voice" is doing right, because the strategies that "The X Factor" U.S. has had so far in Season 2 have been failures. The proof is in the declining ratings for the show.

I watch "The Voice" and "The X Factor," and it's obvious that "The Voice" gets higher ratings because viewers like "The Voice" judges/coaches more, and viewers can see that "The Voice" contestants are treated better than "X Factor" contestants. There is also no fake/scripted/manufactured backstage drama on "The Voice." What it comes down to is that "The Voice" has been better at delivering what the majority of viewers want instead of going for tabloid-like trashiness in a pathetic attempt to increase ratings. "The X Factor" should not underestimate the intelligence of TV viewers and the quality and credibility that viewers want on "The X Factor."

"The X Factor" decision makers incorrectly assumed that Spears would bring in bigger ratings as a judge in the show's second season, but the result has been the exact opposite. Spears' reported $15 million "X Factor" salary has been a complete rip-off/waste for the show. This all-time low in "The X Factor" U.S. ratings is further evidence that Spears is a flop for "The X Factor" because clearly she's not boosting the ratings, no matter now much her fans waste their time embarrassing themselves by screaming about how "popular" she is. She may have made millions from music sales, perfume sales and her lip-syncing concerts, but she's a flop with TV viewers who like to watch talent contests. The ratings are proof that she's been a huge mistake for "The X Factor." That fact cannot be denied or disputed.

If "The X Factor" U.S. doesn't make drastic improvements in Season 3, the ratings are going to continue to go down the toilet. The show has had almost two seasons to figure out what's working with viewers. Millions of viewers have abandoned "The X Factor" U.S., and it's time for "The X Factor" decision makers to wake up and see what isn't working with viewers and fix these problems that have become too obvious to ignore. A lot of viewers aren't fooled by insincere press releases and contrived PR statements that try to hide these problems.

I love that this article is talking about a show that was cut short and rescheduled and that it reads like it was written by a deranged Christina fan. Poor poor 18 year old ( :lmao: ) LUV.

Actually even though Madonna's latest projects have underwhelmed me, I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for her and I certainly wouldn't go around trawling the internet for silly Madonna gifs like a nimrod. Maybe it's because you're so 'young' :lmao:

After Rih's album it sounds sooo dated.

Has a potential to be big in 2009.

I don't generally buy music, but I always support my favorite artists by buying their records. It's a matter of principle.

I'm the same, the only CD's I bought in the past couple of years were Femme Fatale, Born This Way and MDNA ( :shy: ) but I'm absolutely not helping Will.I.Am have another hit, he needs to go away ASAP.

Her interview /w ET on 11/19/2012:

I'm getting used to her croaky voice. The interviewer was so dumb at the end though: "What's the ONE thing you do better than any man?". Is this the 50s? Not that Britney helps it with her answer either: she CLEANS better than all men. Way to promote sexist stereotypes.

Anyways, us Britney fans are at a stage when we're happy with her long as she sounds human, so can't complain :)

I've seen worse, even if she looks like Kitty Brucknall from last year's X Factor UK.

WHy is she pretending to be British though?
