I'm just listening to "Black Cat" again. What fantastic, gutsy vocals she has when she wants to. I just wish she wanted to more often, and had the songs to warrant them. *sigh* |

I also *adore* that song on "janet." called "Back". The one with Kathleen Battle and the operatic backing voclas. What a fucking *incredible* track. Now THAT'S the kind of thing she should be doing again, not the generic, fuck-me-senseless, whispery R&B shit. |

Janet Jackson gets disciplined James Hossack Wed, 16 Jan 2008 She may have long ago established herself as one of the most successful divas in the pop music industry, but Janet Jackson still admits that growing up the youngest sister of Michael Jackson was hard. The last of the nine Jackson children, Janet was only a toddler when her five elder brothers started recording number one hit singles as The Jackson 5, giving her a lot to live up to when she made her debut album in 1982. "I was still coming out of their shadow, or at least felt I was when I did 'Rhythm Nation'," in 1989, she told AFP in a recent interview. She only felt she had made it with her 1993 album 'Janet', which sold 20 million worldwide. "Finally when I did 'Janet' I felt, ok I've arrived. I finally made it all by myself to this spot, no coattail hanging, none of that. I felt good about it at that point," she said. Rich musical education But growing up in the shadow of The Jackson 5 also gave her a rich musical education from a young age, she says, adding the experience helps explain the variety of music in her albums. "I was exposed to so many different styles of music and that stemmed from having so many brothers and sisters. Everybody was listening to something different and it all rubbed off on the youngest one for sure," she says. More than 20 years after releasing her first platinum-selling record, Jackson is hoping her 10th studio album 'Discipline', due out next month, can mark a return to form after her two most recent albums saw disappointing sales. 'Discipline' seems to slide effortlessly from house to pop and more soulful slow tracks. Due out in the United States on 26 February, the album is being billed as classic Janet, mixing dance beats, pop and slow tempo tracks. "My music's always been mixed like that. The only thing that I didn't do this time around, which I'll probably do on the next album, is to do a rock record," she said. "There's nothing new that I haven't already done. I know where my lane is. I'm not trying to veer too far off the beaten path," she added. Reversing a downward trend The music industry is already predicting the album could reverse a downward trend in Jackson's career that started with the "wardrobe malfunction" that saw her breast being exposed live on television during the 2004 Super Bowl. But she rejects any idea that the album is a long-awaited comeback, as some in the industry have suggested, saying simply: "I never went anywhere. I think a comeback is when you've been gone and you actually come back." Even if her last two studio albums '20 Y.O.' in 2006 and 'Damita Jo' in 2004 failed to see the massive success of 'Rhythm Nation 1814' from 1989 and 'Janet' in 1993, both albums still sold more than one million copies worldwide. "The music business isn't quite doing what it used to. There are certain people that are doing pretty good numbers but still not the kind of numbers we used to do back then," Jackson said. "If this is the album that takes everything back to the way it used to be that would be great and I'd be excited that it's mine." In a much better space Jackson, now 41, admitted a decade ago to suffering from depression, self doubt and having self-esteem issues, something she says is now long behind her. "I'm in a much, a much better space. I still have my moments when I go back into my little hole but it's never for long. It's never the way that it was and I think we all have days like that." She talks candidly about picking herself up. "It really starts with myself first and foremost," she explained. "I had to see myself in a different light for one, to start to like myself, when I didn't before, to learn to love myself, to stop letting myself get into situations in relationships that weren't very healthy for me." The title track from her 1986 album 'Control' opened with an affirmation stating "it's all about control... control of what I say, control of what I do", but the singer admits that over the years she has loosened her grip. "I guess being older I've realized that we're not really the ones that are in control. It's truly coming from God. He's the main one that's in control of it all," she says, adding that independence is more important for her. Strong sense of sexuality One theme that has remained constant in her albums, and is present in the new record, she says, is a strong sense of her sexuality. "I think the last album was very sexual too. It just turns out like that. I don't set out to say 'I'm going to make a sexual album.' It just happens that way really." Jackson says she is constantly approached by people who say their children were conceived to one of her songs, most popularly tracks like 'Velvet Rope', 'Would You Mind', and perhaps most appropriately 'Any Time, Any Place'. "It makes me feel great because that's what it's all about. It's creating music that moves people and puts them in a certain mood and that's the correct mood that you want them to be in," she said. She says she hopes 'Discipline', the title track of the new album and a slow soulful hip-grinder with breathy vocals, will follow in that tradition. Media obsession But when not being approached by fans, she confides, the pressure of being a public figure can get too much, especially with the media's obsession with celebrities. "It's definitely worse now than it has been in the past, but I think also a lot of celebrities want it that way," she said. "I think there are those that really do shy away from it and then there are others that love the attention, so any chance they can get they're not going to try and avoid it. You can avoid it a lot of times," she added. "But you have moments when you just want to have your down time and kind of be alone and kind of blend in with the rest of the crowd and then somewhere out of nowhere (the paparazzi) come along. "When you come to a red light, they jump out the car and surround your car and then jump back in their car once the light turns green. It becomes too much at times," she admitted. "I think there should be certain guidelines, where it can get too dangerous and that's where it has to stop." http://entertainment.iafrica.com/features/793840.htm |

Here's a review of the Janet and Mariah albums from a guy who was at both listenint parties held today in London: Janet and Mariah - First listen! So, Def Jam were showing off the two female jewels in their crown today with playbacks of the new Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey albums. Label Boss Antonio "LA" Reid seemed very excited about both of them, although that is his job, and mentioned plans for six singles from Mariah's That Chick, which hits the stores in April. First up, though, was Janet's Discipline. If you've heard the single, Feedback, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the album. It's crisp, danceable R&B lavished with Janet's trademark velvet harmonies. The stand-out track was probably Tonight, a bubbling club track which can only be Jackson's response to Rihanna's Don't Stop The Music. Reid mentioned that some of the tracks weren't finished - and this one sounded like it was missing a sample somewhere in the mix. Once that's added, this could be Janet's biggest dance success since Together Again. Love, Love, Love and This Can't Be Good saw the lyrical return of the sweet singer who first raised her head on Let's Wait Awhile - all coy and bashful while falling head over heels in love. But the sleazy siren of 20 YO is also present. Title track Discipline is a gruseome plea for fetishistic S&M sex - with Janet referring to her lover as "Daddy" while asking to be tied up and disciplined. Given that her father is a well-documented control freak who used to beat his kids, this is more than a little uncomfortable. Speaking of family connections, there's long been a rumour that Janet and Michael will team up again (as they did on 1996's Scream) this year. Well, nothing I heard today confirms that rumour - but there is a track called Rock With You that appears to sample the single of the same name from Off The Wall. Could the finished version feature guest vocals by the former King of Pop? I genuinely hope not. The remaining two tracks, Rollercoaster and Greatest Ex Ever, didn't really set my world alight - but you never know what'll happen on repeated listens. The main thing seems to be that Janet is back on form, vocally and lyrically. The record is very safe and commercial, although I'm not sure where they'll go for the third single (Tonight surely has to be the second). But as a first step towards career rehabilitation Def Jam have made a strong play for their newest diva. Their old diva (in terms of contract, not age, of course) is Mariah, who is riding high after the 7xPlatinum-selling Emancipation Of Mimi. We got to hear 10 tracks from the follow-up, That Chick, which I have to say sounded more polished and commercial than Janet's effort. One track in particular is set to make big bucks, and that's Bye Bye - a torch song for people "who lost they grandmothers". I guarantee that Simon Cowell will be sick of hearing badly-realised auditions of it by the end of the year. Lyrics were never Carey's strong point, mind you, so her paean to loss is summed up with not-very-insightful Hallmark platitudes like "I'd give the world to see your face" and "Life goes on". Profound, eh? Still, at least it's better than when she desperately attempts to prove how bang up to date she is. In Touch My Body, she purrs to her lover: "If there's a camera up in here then I best not catch this flick on youtube (youtube)". Not exactly the sexiest boudoir come-on you've ever heard, is it? But there are plenty of good tunes to counter the awesomely bad lyrics. Migrate, about a night out with Mariah while she wears jeans ("yeah, they fit", she informs us) is sure to be a candidate for heavy MTV rotation, although I hope to god they excise T-Pain's hopelessly strained vocals. Lovin' You Long Time, meanwhile, is a strutting uptempo number very much in the style of It's Like That. So, what have we learnt from this listening "event"? Well, I wasn't overwhelmed by the music - despite (or perhaps because of) the fact it was played so ear-splittingly loud that it felt like I was being punched repeatedly in the ears by a cyberman. Both artists have turned in a tuneful, competent set of R&B songs, but I'm not sure that any of them have the charisma or vitality to compete with the Rihannas and Beyonces of this world. Both albums: 6/10 (scores may go up or down after further listens at levels tolerable to the human ear). |

Ooh, another fabulous Janet song is "Where Are You Now?" from "janet.". The best Jacko song he never recorded! There was even a Nelle Hooper remix of it on that shitty "Janet. Remixed" album. Let's ignore the fact that it's actually about her poodle that went missing. |

Oh I totally agree. There's something ultimately far too polished, media-trained and dull about Ri and Bee. |

And it all comes down to the songs. Beyonce has had two solo albums and 4 DC albums and Rihanna has had 3 solo albums right? Apart from crazy in love which was made because of that explosive horn sample I can't really name a 'trademark' Beyonce or Rihanna song. For better or worse Mariah and Janet put their stamps all over their songs. You KNOW when you hear a Mariah or Janet song. |

The second single needs to be STRONG as fuck in order for her to make any sort of impact. Honestly, though, I truly think she's over. I remember people being over her around "All for You", no matter if it was a success or not. People just don't connect with her any longer. |

INDEED!
Yeah, she isn't significant anymore...........even if the album was amazing, it most likely won't sell well until she's proved it, so maybe around her 3rd single if all singles have been STRONG and people are made to feel like they should buy instead of dling the album. |
