Discipline isn't a masterpiece, but it is the best Janet album in a decade. I think the reason people are cheering Discipline on while bashing Hard Candy is that Janet came off a decade of suckage and released this, her most consistant work since Velvet Rope, while Madonna came off a banner decade and released her weakest album since Bedtime Stories. I think if HC was a Janet album and Discipline was a Madonna album, fan reactions would be the same, HC is the best Janet album in ages, Discipline is Madonna's worst album in ages. They are on such different levels these days, we come to expect so much better from Madonna while Janet really lowered the bar big time with those last few pieces of crap that an "average" album after 20 Y.O. sounds like Rhythm Nation revisited, compared to how Madonna released four back to back to back to back masterpieces from ROL through COADF.

Your arguemenrt lost credibility with that statement.

American Life was one of Madonna's weakest albums ever.

It trluly was not a masterpiece

American Life is, for me, a highlight of Madonna's career and could have been a turning point... but she u-turned and made the amazing follow up we all know and love

Music and AL were good? Holy fuck, they were awful! AL had "some" moments.

Music sounded like a collection of bad b-sides. Only two songs were marginally memorable. I HATE THAT FUCKING ALBUM! What a disaster!

if you want a "bad" Madonna album, look at Bedtime Stories or even half of Hard Candy. American Life and Music are in the Like A Prayer/Ray Of Light zeitgeist in comparison to those two.

People only love to gang up on American Life because it didn't sell. Well, it looks like Hard Candy is going to take that albums place as the uberflop of her career, especially since it's so much more US mainstream than AL was, and still it's selling poor. AL was doomed from the moment the title track was released as a single, 4 Minutes is her biggest American hit since Music and yet people are still not buying the album.

I love Music and American Life and yes, they are up there with the great Madonna albums IMO, so shoot me

Can we all cut the crap about people not liking an album because of its chart performance. That's a tad ridiculous. Look at the musical tastes of people on this board. Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, PJ Harvey, women who hardly make a dent in the charts...I seriously doubt any of us really let commercial impact cloud our judgement. It's insulting.

Many found American Life to be weak, monotone, and boring with only occasional shimmers of a good tune.

I still believe if American Life had done Madonna's then-usual 2-3 million in the US instead of 600,000, it would have a stronger reputation. She tried something different and combined with an "unpatriotic" music video at the height of the conservative pro-war pro-Bush regime in America, people didn't even want to give the album a chance. American Life is easily her most underrated album ever and the only "bad" tracks on the album are the title track and I'm So Stupid IMO.

Anyways, I think people have different standards over Tori, PJ, Bjork, etc... and Madonna. It's just like how everyone loved Discipline by Janet at first but when it turned out to be the latest Janet-sized flop instead of the album that rescued her from the decline, everyone turned on the album. Janet and Madonna are two female artists who people expect to do well, Tori, PJ, Bjork, Aimee Mann, etc... aren't held up to commercial standards.
