I believe she's only the second female British artist after Petula Clark to get 2 #1 singles in the US.

Thats a surprise....actually the only British females that have had more than one Number 1 in Britain (that I can think of) are Geri Halliwell and Melanie C....thats even more surprising...

I wonder how much the album will sell in the US by the end of the year - SLY could be number 1 for ages - 5 million ? 6 million?
she's definitely on course to pass 5m usa sales and 4m uk sales, if not quite more, by the end of 2011

Adele is on course to sell over 13 million copies of her latest album 21 by Christmas.

The record is estimated to reach the impressive milestone by December after tipping the 10 million sales mark earlier this week, seven months after its release.

The singer's manager, Jonathan Dickins, told Music Week: "It's just phenomenal. We knew we had a good record and privately we had some targets, but you can't legislate for this.

"We've taken the whole thing very much one step at a time, but no-one could have anticipated this."

Adele's total dwarfs best sellers from recent years, including Eminem's Recovery in 2010, which sold 5.7 million copies, and Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream in 2009, which sold 6 million units.

The feat makes her the fourth British artist in five years to be awarded the top global selling album, after Boyle, Coldplay's Viva La Vida in 2008 and Amy Winehouse's Black to Black in 2007.

21 currently sits at number two in the UK after 33 weeks in the top five, and is expected to hit the three million sales mark following her appearance on ITV's The Jonathan Ross Show.

Adele's 'Someone Like You' topped the Billboard singles chart earlier this week following a well-received performance at the MTV VMAs.

It just goes to show how making very safe, bland, unthreatening and uninteresting music can really rope in the millions of people who don't normally buy records and use it only as background music at dinner parties. Fair play to her.

I have to disagree - I had no interest in Adele for the longest time - but I finally listened to the album a couple of months ago - and I think its excellent - a classic album. She deserves to win every award going in 2012.

I think it's a good album, nothing more. In no way is it deserving of the projected 13-15 million sales. Filler aside, the songs are decent, but my main issue with her is actually the voice. Yes, she can belt it out and is reasonably solid live, but the actual tone of her voice is deeply uninteresting. Listen to someone like Amy Winehouse. Now THAT'S a voice, not Adele's solid, but unremarkable one. In no way is it a truly great or classic voice. It simply doesn't have enough character or uniqueness, like all the greats' voices have.

Not to mention that even from a technical perspective Adele's upper register is extremely limited and forced as hell. She sound so strained on the latter parts of SLY.

Absolutely. Plus, the supposedly "flawless" performances of SLY are nothing of the sort. There are bum notes littered throughout her Brits and VMAs performances. A singer with a supposedly amazing voice who just stands there and sings has no excuse for hitting flat notes.

The hysteria surrounding her album and vocal talent is weird.

It's because she's white.

Record buyers typically don't expect good voices from white women, especially with all the Britneys and Katys around, so when one with a good voice comes along it's like "OMG! She AMAZEBALLS!! LOL!!"

If Adele were black her voice wouldn't be merely as praised as she would be compared to other black women, and the impressiveness of her voice falls off quickly in those comparisons. Even just among current black female singers everyone from Beyonce to Jennifer Hudson to Yolanda Adams would blow her ass off the stage.

You know what? That is so f*cking spot-on. She's a decent singer for a white girl, but she isn't fit to even be mentioned in the same breath as those singers.

And when you think about it, it really does hold water as Adele and Gaga are the only current mainstream white female singers with notable voices. Overall Adele has no vocal competition, her fans have no reference point.

This probably also explains why more than a few Britney loons say, in all seriousness, that's she's a "better singer than Madonna ever was!" They don't know any better, as there are no vocal standards in pop anymore.

I love the idea that fans of Britney think she's a better singer than Madonna. Imagine Britney trying to sing the Evita songs, or anything on Like A Prayer. :lmao:

As for Adele and GaGa, I genuinely think GaGa is a superior vocalist, but because she's not fat and doesn't perform in a conservative, "I am a serious singer" way, many dismiss her vocal skill.

Gaga's upper register is stronger, just listen to the beginning of "Government Hooker" for example, and her voice is more versatile. She could also belt Adele off the stage and out the rear door.

There's very little difference between Dido and Adele, other than Adele has a voice that's a billion times better. They both make music that appeals to the same demographic.

Pixie Lott, Leona lewis and Alexandra Burke have all had more than one number one.
