Good riddance.
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/05/uk.jackson.comeback/index.html LONDON, England (CNN) -- Reclusive pop icon Michael Jackson will perform 10 concerts in London in July in what he described Thursday as a "final curtain call." The summer shows, Jackson's first major live performances in 12 years, will take place at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena from July 8. Jackson, 50, appeared in front of fans and media at the venue Thursday to announce the "This Is It" shows. ![]() "These will be my final shows performing in London. "This Is It" really means this is it," said Jackson, wearing a trademark black military-style jacket with sparkling embroidery and black sunglasses. Jackson blew kisses and saluted his fans as they chanted "Michael! Michael!" "I'll be performing the songs my fans want to hear. I'll see you in July and I love you so much." Video Watch Michael Jackson's announcement » Tickets for the shows will cost £50-75 ($70-105) and will go on sale on March 13. Fans can pre-register to purchase tickets at www.MichaelJacksonLive.com. The O2 Arena has acquired a reputation in recent years for staging "must-see" musical events. Last year it hosted Led Zeppelin's one-off comeback gig and in 2007 Prince staged a 21-night residency there. Britney Spears, the Pet Shop Boys and Lionel Richie are among performers due to play the venue this year. Event promoter Rob Hallett welcomed Jackson's return, saying: "We are delighted to facilitate the return of the king of pop, long may he reign! When Michael Jackson performs the eyes of the world will be watching." Jackson's appearance Thursday was not as slick as some of his signature dance moves. The star was held up in traffic as he traveled from his central London hotel to the venue on a peninsula of the River Thames in southeast London. An exclusive video that was to be shown before his arrival on stage then failed to play on cue. Several hundred Jackson fans had waited up to five hours to show their support for their idol. iReport.com: Show us your Michael Jackson moves "I'm quite excited about him coming back," said Lee Gibson, 36. "He's got great songs despite all his issues. It's going to be massive." Owen Griffiths, 29, said: "It will be interesting to see what he does. If he puts on a good show like he used to do back in the day it will be a turning point for him just like it was for Prince here. If he's playing a greatest hits concert I would definitely pay £50 to see that --- so long as it's "Thriller" and "Off the Wall" only." Jackson, a child star with the Jackson Five who went onto enjoy stellar solo success with classic albums such as "Thriller" and "Bad," has rarely been seen in public since he was acquitted on child molestation charges in the U.S. in 2005. Rumors of financial difficulties and health problems -- in 2008 he was photographed being pushed in a wheelchair -- have swirled around the famously eccentric star in recent years. Last year he sold his iconic Neverland ranch and he has spent much of his time since his acquittal living in Bahrain. The auction house, Julien's, is selling Jackson's Neverland property including the gates, the singer's famed white-jeweled glove and a stretched Rolls Royce. Video Watch what Jackson memorabilia is being sold » advertisement Jackson hasn't recorded a studio album since "Invincible" -- his 10th solo record -- in 2001. His last major series of concerts was a world tour to promote the "HiStory" album in 1996 and 1997. "Thriller," released in 1982 and containing classic Jackson hits such as "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and the title track, is the bestselling album of all time. Jackson is estimated to have sold more than 750 million albums in total. |

His shows were so great, he performed in my city in 1996 and it was spectacular, i loved it. I wonder if he's able to give a good show nowadays. |

I never understood why anyone would want to see a Michael Jackson show. The same tired old dance moves, naff costumes and "sets". His shows were already hugely dated by the 90s. Sure he was a great dancer, but his shows were never in the same artistic or creative league as Madonna's. |

I got dragged along to the History tour at Wembley many moons ago and (Janet Jackson notwithstanding) it was the most boring gig I've EVER been to. As a fan of his music in the 70's and 80's I expected to be enthralled, instead of which it was like watching the Tin Man from Wizard Of Oz shuffling about, screeching and flicking peace signs. A total SNORE. By the 90's Jackson was already an artist so utterly irrelevant that seeing him in the flesh just held no buzz whatsoever. It was like watching your nan do the Macarena at a wedding. |

I agree. Bad was truly "the end" for him IMO. The early 90's was horrible for all 1980's superstars IMO (U2 were the big exception, even Madonna got hit hard a bit) as all the new stars pushed them out of the way, and MJ was probably the most tragic drop. I actually did like a lot of the HIStory album, it was probably his edgiest work but of course, when it didn't sell 30 million plus worldwide (not counting the inflation for 2 discs), he got scared. |

He's a total fraud. He never did anything but have a few good pop tunes. He did that robotic dance crap, and only that robotic dance crap his entire career. He lasted as a top solo artist for a decade -- ten fucking years. The end. "The Final Curtain Call" -- the idiot won't even do it, and if he does, he'll do one show, and then pull out for health concerns. About him needing money and he won't be able to not perform again, listen, he's been in debt for 20 years. He never went back to work to raise funds. Money concerns will not make him work again. He lives in a bubble. Michael Jackson will be known as a pedophile, not some music genius. Jesus Juice was is last greatest hit. |

That is not true. Gems like Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal, Black Or White, Remember The Time, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Scream and fuck, even You Rock My World will never ever be forgotten. No one can do smooth pop like he can. |

Earth Song? Surely you jest. You Rock My World, nobody gives a fuck. And yes, those are the tunes I'm referring to. That's not a million hits. It's from the same stupid decade. People 25 and under, don't give a fuck about Michael Jackson overall, and the majority, when they think of him, sees him as a freak show who likes little boys, (no offense, River). I was with you up to Smooth Criminal... As for tripe like You Are Not Alone, I'm trying not to think of the video and Jarvis Cocker had the best riposte to Earth Song.Edited by Fembot 1, Mar 6 2009, 07:52 PM.

He may be whatever loser nowadyas. But at his time he was the greatest pop artist ever and nobody has achieved his level of fame back then, not even Madonna (although she was pretty near). I agree that nowadays nobody cares about him, but he has an stunning backcatalogue. |

I wasn't the biggest fan of HIStory, but Earth Song was brilliant. Amazing video, powerful song... one of his last great tracks, along with Stranger In Moscow. |

The main problem with MJ is that he set such standards for himself in the 80's that by the time of Dangerous, he was consumed with trying to top himself and by that time, it was a new decade, new stars were coming in vogue and the tracks, while good, weren't amazing like they once were. HIStory was stronger IMO because after the 93 allegations and media backlash, MJ was angry and had something to say, while the album was self-indulgent (especially with the statue), HIStory was probably the edgiest album of his career. It would've been nice if he tried to stay on that path and released a few more "personal" albums where he has something to say, I think he would probably be less of a joke in people's minds. Still, like I said on that other board, I am positive every single person wishing flop on MJ's tour owned a copy of Thriller, Bad or Dangerous in the day. |

I honestly dont LOVE a SINGLE MJ song. I guess they're ok, tightly written and produced but I dont think theres another pop 'legend' that leaves me completely cold like he does. |
