A Michael Jackson memorial concert is being planned for August 29 at the O2 Arena in London where the late star had planned to perform 50 dates. Variety is reporting that Randy Phillips, president of the company AEG Live which was promoting the O2 shows, told UK's Sky News that "at some point the world needs to see this production, and I would imagine it could be done as a tribute with the family... and the stars that were influenced by (Jackson). We are discussing with the family so the sooner the better." http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/07/michael-jackson-tribute-show-planned-for-london.html |

The Michael Jackson Movie - the swansong crafted from his This Is It concert rehearsal footage - has been picked up by Sony Pictures. The feature, which will be taken from the 80 hours of footage shot, is expected to be helmed by High School Musical director Kenny Ortega who took the initiative to chronicle the star's preparations for his 50-date London stint and is currently free following the end of the HSM3 term, before kicking off his Sunday shoes to film Footloose early next year. Sony are apparently looking at a $50 million bill for the worldwide rights to the rushes, paid to concert organisers AEG Entertainment who are hurriedly attempting to claw back their losses after the King Of Pop's untimely death last month. Sony pipped other interested studios to the post due to their ties with Sony Music Entertainment who own Jackson's music publishing rights. Also on the market from industrious AEG, is the footage from the MJ tribute concert which will feature sister Janet and Justin Timberlake, taking place on August 29. The footage, originally meant for a behind the scenes movie of the gigs - and which will now be a way to cater for the grieving fans of the star - was tipped to be re-mastered in 3D. The film will also be interwoven with versions of Jackson's videos which were shot especially for airing at the concerts, including an update on the classic Thriller. Sources expect the film to hit the public domain before the end of the year. http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=25355 |

I just the rehearsal footage is of sufficiently high quality. I'm sure when they were filming it, they never expected it would be for a proper release like this. Hopefully it'll be good. |

i think they filmed it having in mind he wouldn't be able to make do with his 50 shows contract. with his death occuring, they'll probably make more money they would have ever wished for. |

A Halloween theatrical release according to The Hollywood Reporter! Jackson Film to Sony for $60 Mil; Halloween Release Set Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire the film that will be made out of Michael Jackson’s rehearsals for his “This Is It” concert tour. The price: $60 million, above initial projections reported elsewhere. Sony and AEG Live have set the release date for Halloween week: Friday, Oct. 30. And to give credit where it’s due, my friends at Hitsdailydouble.com are correct in saying that the split on the money is 90% to the Jackson estate and 10% to AEG Live. The Jackson estate means Michael’s kids and his mother and the eventual charity that will be formed in Michael’s name. I am told, as I reported earlier, that the hoped for Aug. 29 show in London seems to be dead. NBC wasn’t the only network not interested. And the reason? Joseph Jackson shopped his own special to the networks, which confused everything, sources say. “He didn’t even tell Janet that she was supposed to be part of it.” And the beat goes on … |

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article6830553.ece A lavish Michael Jackson tribute concert organised by the late King of Pop’s brother has been cancelled just two weeks before it was due to take place at a Vienna palace. Despite claims from Jermaine Jackson that the gig would be headlined by Mary J Blige, Natalie Cole and Chris Brown, it emerged that none of the stars had formally committed to perform at the September 26 event. Jackson announced today that the concert would instead be staged at London's Wembley stadium in June 2010. “A little more than five weeks ago I began, together with my partners in Vienna, to work on the Tribute Concert. As you can imagine staging a show of this monumental dimension in less than eight weeks is a daunting challenge,” he said. “I personally have spoken to many international artists and invited them to attend The Tribute and perform one of Michael’s songs. Several leading artists immediately agreed to participate in this unique tribute show. Many others told me personally that it would be a great honor to be part of this memorial concert for my late brother – an artist who influenced the music world like virtually no other. “However, due to the short time frame involved it just was not possible for many of them to change their schedule so that they could be on stage in Vienna on September 26th.” He went on to reveal plans for a UK event: "We have therefore decided, after careful consideration, to reschedule The Tribute concert for my brother to June 2010 and to stage this very special music event at Wembley Stadium in London. "Here, over 70,000 fans will have the opportunity to experience the life and music of my beloved late brother. We will hold the concert in the city that he himself chose for his comeback concerts but, due to his tragic death, he was not able to do." In a dig at Austria's widespread disappointment that he failed to secure big-name artists - Madonna, Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder were all initially rumoured to be taking part - Jermaine said: “When artists who have won 8 Grammy Awards and sold millions of records around the world and are able to sell out large stadiums are then called 'B-list artists', are made fun of and generally disrespected, is something I just cannot understand. If these artists are not welcome in Vienna, London is more than happy to have them”. In a packed press conference on Tuesday, Jermaine announced that Mary J Blige, Natalie Cole and Chris Brown would perform for 65,000 Jackson fans in the grounds of Schoenbrunn Palace. But yesterday Blige told an MTV interviewer that she would not be at the tribute. “There’s a lot going on at that time and I’m really, really sorry that I’m not going to be able to be there.” Her spokesperson said the singer had never agreed to appear as she had a previous commitment to appear at a Gucci fashion show in Milan. Cole’s representative dealt another blow to organisers by revealing that the Grammy Award-winner would be attending an event for the Dalai Lama in Tenessee the weekend of the tribute. Maureen O'Connor said concert organisers had contacted Cole, "but she was never committed to do it". Meanwhile, Brown, who is on probation for assaulting his former pop singer girlfriend, Rihanna, would have required the approval of a judge to travel from the US to Austria but a Los Angeles court spokeswoman said he had not applied for permission. In an attempt to halt rumours that the concert was crumbling due to a lack of support from his parents and siblings, Jermaine turned to his mother Katherine. She recorded a video for the tribute website endorsing the event but only added to the confusion by announcing: “I’m looking forward to being there on the 29th to see the show”. The concert was scheduled for September 26. Jermaine had planned to perform a duet with Jackson at the concert by employing video and audio recordings and had secured a deal with CNN to broadcast the concert around the globe. Tickets were on sale for as much as €518 (£543). Ticket holders were advised to return to the outlet where they made their purchase for a full refund. Organisers have promised to e-mail fans who bought tickets on the internet or from a call centre with details of how to claim a refund. The concert is the second tribute event to fail in the past month. AEG, who were due to stage Jackson's comeback residency at London's 02 arena, cancelled two memorial concerts in August after failing to seal deals with artists they had hoped would perform. Tickets for the London event will go on sale on December 1 and will be priced from £44. Jackson was buried in a private ceremony last week, more than two months after his death in Los Angeles. His death has been ruled a homicide and several doctors who treated Jackson are under investigation. |

From Entertainment Weekly: New Michael Jackson song and album due next month Michael Jackson fans will be singing his newest song two weeks before his behind-the-scenes documentary, This Is It, comes out on Oct. 27. Sony will release the single, “This Is It,” on Oct. 12, and a two-disc album featuring classic Jackson tunes will follow on the day of the film’s release. The first disc of This Is It, the album, will include two versions of the new single, and many of Jackson’s greatest hits, arranged as they will appear in the film. (Jackson’s brothers provided the backing vocals on the new song.) The second disc will be composed of previous unreleased versions of Jackson’s classic singles and a poem entitled “Planet Earth.” |

But Latoya has 100 songs, aren't 10 of them decent enough to release a new album? |
