http://www.billboard.com/#/news/michael-jackson-has-earned-72-million-since-1004031711.story Michael Jackson Has Earned $72 Million Since Death Even before the "This Is It" opening, Michael Jackson had earned $90 million in the past year, with most of it coming since his death five months ago. That sizable sum put him third on the Forbes list of dead celebrities making the most money. Jackson earned less than the $350 million that fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent scored in the past year, and the $235 million earned by the songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Forbes counted money earned from October 2008-October 2009, even for Jackson, who died June 25. But about $72 million -- or 80% of the $90 million earned in the past 12 months -- came after Jackson's death, said a spokesperson for GreenLight, a consultancy company that represents "delebs," their term for dead celebrities still earning money. On Wednesday, Jackson -- along with AEG Entertainment and Sony -- began raking in money for next year's list as the concert-rehearsal documentary "This Is It" opened in 3,500 domestic theaters and around the world. As for the rest of the Forbes list, it's the first time at No. 1 for Saint Laurent, who died in June 2008. And Rodgers and Hammerstein, who died in 1979 and 1960, respectively, are high on the list this time around courtesy of a $200 million acquisition of much of their catalog in April. Coming in fourth is last year's No. 1, Elvis Presley, with $55 million; "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien is fifth with $50 million. The rest of the Top 13 -- a Forbes deleb tradition -- consists of Charles Schulz, John Lennon, Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), Albert Einstein, Michael Crichton, Jimi Hendrix, Aaron Spelling and Andy Warhol. Together, the 13 delebs grossed $886 million in the past 12 months, by far the biggest total in the nine years that Forbes has put out its list. Last year, for example, the 13 top earned $194 million; the year before that was $232 million. Those looking for a piece of two of the delebs on this year's list -- Warhol and Jackson -- can bid on the pop artist's silkscreen portrait of the King of Pop that is expected to fetch as much as $700,000 at an auction next month. |

Janet Jackson's new album, Number Ones, is in stores today, and now a source is telling ET that the estate for the late Michael Jackson is at war with Janet over one of the songs on the album. The song in question is called "Make Me" and features a lyric that reads, "Don't stop till you get it up." The source has told ET that Michael's estate is questioning Janet's right to use the lyric because of its similarity to his song "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," featured on Michael's album Off the Wall. We've reached out to Janet's camp, who have not yet responded, while the attorneys representing the estate's special administators John Branca and John McClain tell ET they are unaware of it and will get back to us. The Jackson family has clashed with Michael's estate previously. Back in August, family matriarch Katherine Jackson was allowed to challenge Branca and McClain without risk of jeopardizing her position as a beneficiary in his will. And just earlier this month, Katherine withdrew her objection to Branca and McClain being the administrators of the will, while patriarch Joe Jackson filed a motion claiming that the lawyers have a "conflict of interest" and should be removed as administrators of the late singer's will. http://www.etonline.com/news/2009/11/81110/M |

By Alan Duke, CNN January 28, 2010 5:56 p.m. EST The Recording Academy, which presents the Grammy Awards, will honor the late pop star with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Special Merit Awards ceremony Saturday evening in Los Angeles. Video of the presentation is likely to be included in Sunday night's musical tribute to Jackson during the Grammy telecast, the sources said. While Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, is expected to attend, Joe Jackson, his father, decided not to go because of his anger over the behind-the-scenes talks that led to the agreement to have the children accept the award, family sources said. The decision came just this week, after Katherine Jackson, the legal guardian of the children, complained to Grammy producers that no family members had been invited, the Jackson sources said. Two sources in the family said that she was initially told by producers that the estate's special administrators would decide who would take part in the Jackson tribute. "Can you believe this crap?" one source quoted Joe Jackson as saying when he heard that. The Grammy producers have not responded to a CNN request for comment. A spokesman for the estate administrators said the matter was for Grammy producers to decide. http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/28/michael.jackson.family/?hpt=Sbin |

What an appalling idea. Why would they parade his children at the Grammies like that? Especially seeing as none of his kids are likely to have any musical talent seeing as he's not their biological father. Couldn't Janet do it instead. She needs the work. |

From Entertainment Weekly: Michael Jackson in a posthumous six-way performance of ''Mother Earth.'' If you saw This Is It in the theaters or bought the soundtrack, you know the song, though not with this all-star support cast. The visuals looked very magical and Avatar-on-Earth; too bad viewers without the required 3-D glasses were left feeling like they just developed cataracts. Nearly everyone sounded stellar vocally, but of all MJ’s transcendent pop hits, was this largely unknown track really the best way to celebrate him? Grade: B "Largely unknown track"? "Mother Earth"? WTF?

By RYAN NAKASHIMA (AP) – 48 minutes ago LOS ANGELES — The estate of Michael Jackson has landed the late King of Pop the biggest recording deal in history: a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony Music Entertainment for 10 projects over seven years, according to a person familiar with the deal. The record-breaking contract through 2017 could be worth up to $250 million if certain conditions are met. One of the albums will be of never-before-released Jackson recordings that will come out in November, the person said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement is expected Tuesday. Future projects may also include a DVD compilation of videos and a re-release of "Off the Wall," Jackson's fifth studio album, which first came out in 1979, accompanied by some unreleased material. Before his sudden death in June at age 50, the pop star had wanted to re-issue the album, people familiar with the deal said. One of the projects already counted in the contract was the two-disc album that accompanied "This Is It," the film based on footage of concert rehearsals for what was to have been Jackson's comeback at London's O2 arena. Including the more than 5 million copies of that special release, Jackson has sold some 31 million albums since his death in June, about two-thirds of them outside the United States. "During his life, Michael's contracts set the standard for the industry," said John Branca, the co-administrator of the Jackson estate, in a statement prepared for release Tuesday. "By all objective criteria, this agreement with Sony Music demonstrates the lasting power of Michael's music by exceeding all previous industry benchmarks." Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music's Columbia Epic Label Group, said in prepared remarks, "We're dedicated to protecting this icon's legacy and we're thrilled that we can continue to bring his music to the world for the foreseeable future." http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...zFEDXgD9EFERS03 |

Jackson Five Surprise! 273 New Tracks Discovered Howard Mann, the Toronto entrepreneur who bought a warehouse full of Jackson family paraphernalia, has a surprise for Michael Jackson fans and the singer's estate. He has the masters to 273 unreleased Jackson tracks. Some are Michael alone, some are duets with superstars like Tina Turner, and some are with the Jackson family. A good chunk of them come from the 1975 CBS variety series featuring the whole family. According to Mann, who seems to know his stuff, the Jacksons were between the end of their Motown contract that summer and the beginning of one with Epic Records. "The recordings belonged to the Jacksons. I bought them with the contents of the warehouse," Mann says. Mann feels the recordings therefore do not belong to the Jackson estate, and he can release them any way he sees fit. Meanwhile, Mann has gone into business-he tells me-with Katherine Jackson only, and not with Joseph Jackson. "My arrangements have nothing at all to do with Joe Jackson," he says. Mann also says he did not pay Katherine Jackson an advance for her book, "Never Can Say Goodbye." Rather, they are business partners. It does seem that Mann has become The Man in the Jacksons' life. But he also his largesse is not responsible for the Jackson brothers reportedly all driving new cars. "You'll have to look elsewhere for that answer." he says. http://www.showbiz411.com/2010/06/22/jackson-five-surprise-273-new-tracks-discovered |
