Big sales projected for Michael Jackson album
By Ed Christman Ed Christman

NEW YORK (Billboard) – The initial U.S. shipment of Michael Jackson's "Michael," due December 14 on Epic Records, is 900,000, according to retail sources.

Record label Sony is projecting first-week CD sales of 340,000 and digital album sales of 60,000.

That projection is similar to debut-week sales of Jackson's album "This Is It," though that album had the marketing strength of a major motion picture behind it.

"This Is It" sold 373,000 units in its first week and has sold 1.6 million units since its release in October 2009, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Second week projections for "Michael," are set at 280,000 units, while digital sales are expected to slip from its debut week percentage of 15% to 8%.

Both of those percentages are better than the digital sales garnered by "This Is It" in its first week when the format accounted for 5.6% of total sales.

"Michael" will carry a $10.25 wholesale cost and a $13.98 list price. Most music merchants say the controversy surrounding the posthumous single "Breaking News" should stoke awareness and sales for the new album "Michael."

"I think people will come out to buy the album, especially with the controversy," Edge Entertainment Distribution music buyer Danny Cohen said.

The debate on song quality and authenticity will likely be a moot point by November 15, when the Jackson website is scheduled to debut "Hold My Hand," which features Akon.

That first commercially available single from "Michael" will be available for sale the same day at digital stores like iTunes.

Some merchants worry that the quality of the first song being streamed from Jackson's site may not inspire consumers to run out and buy the set on street date. One merchant described "Breaking News" as "an interesting choice to sell an album. It's not a good first look for the album."

Merchants say that Sony sales representatives have told them the single was chosen more because of the lyrical content as a way to herald the news about the upcoming album.

Hmmm...it'll be interesting to see if there's anything truly good on the album, or whether it'll blow up in their faces.

Michael Jackson's New Song 'Keep Your Head Up' Leaks

The late King of Pop rides solo in this slow, uplifting tune which is taken from his December 14 release.

While people are looking forward to the official Michael Jackson first posthumous single "Hold My Hand" which will be released on November 15, what just surfaced on the web is a different MJ song. Still taken from his forthcoming album "Michael", the newly-leaked song is titled "Keep Your Head Up".

Unlike the soon-to-be-released single which features Akon and the buzz track "Breaking News" which contains upbeat tune, this new one is a solo song with slow beat. "Keep your head up to the sky/ We could just rise up, tell me now/ Give me your wings so we can fly," Michael sings softly.

The self-titled album is going to be made available for purchase in the U.S. on December 14. Beside collaborating with Akon, Michael Jackson also makes a duet with 50 Cent in "Monster" and Lenny Kravitz in "(I Can't Make It) Another Day".

I think so too. I seriously doubt there are all these incredible songs just lying around. It'd be lovely to think there are, but I just can't see it somehow.

To be fair, if it's post-Invincible material, I don't have high hopes on it. 50 Cent? ugh. My interest drops big time post-Dangerous when it comes to MJ. HIStory was hit and miss (Earth Song is one of his all time best though), but "Whatever Happens" was the only good track on Invincible.

Yeah, "Invincible" was mostly weak. That's why I doubt there are dozens of great tracks lying around. I think he was already spent.

The new single has premiered on the official site. You can stream it here:

Not bad at all, considering. At least it sounds like a properly finished track and it's very catchy after one or two listens. I can see it doing quite well.

Really? The production was already dated when that album was released.

No it wasn't. The album came out the same time as Brandy's Full Moon. I remember What About Us and some songs on Invincible that had beats that were out of this world.

So your benchmark for cutting edge production is...Brandy?

Oh kayyy.

I clearly remember listening to "Invincible" at the time and thinking how dated it was. Just my opinion!

They had Rodney Jerkins back then. He and Timbaland came with the sickest beats in that period

The album will be a success, as will all of his posthumous albums released once a year for the next 7. Michael's name sells. That's just a fact.

"Invincible" was so goddamn awful!!! That was the most expensive recorded album in history! He took 4 years to record it too. What a horrible album to go out on. "HIStory", has got to be his artistic best! I would love outtakes from those album sessions.
