only it looks like she's not getting away with it this time around.
i'm actually pretty glad she's flopping for the time being. if mdna turns to be the hot mess we are suspecting, maybe she'll decide
a. becoming interested in her music or
b. just give it up and save face
i'd rather she never records new music ever again than producing such drivel. there's plenty of hits in her back catalogue that could provide a variety of tourlists for how much longer she wants to bring money to her account as a pop dinosaur act. if touring is all she's interested in, then fair enough, we just don't need more crap to be reminded of how good she once used to be

"Part of Me" entered at #101 in the US this week, but has a strong chance of zooming to #1 next week.

Agreed. I've not wanted to say too much about it because I don't want to annoy people and this *is* a Madonna board but this era has been kind of upsetting for me. I think a lot of people went through this with Hard Candy already but for whatever reason I was fine with that album/era as a change of pace and a not-her-best-but-ok type of thing, however I've reached a point now where I'm really not comfortable with the direction (not just musically) that I feel she's taking, and appears to be quite committed to. On the one hand I feel like I want it to stop now but on the other hand I can't bear the thought of this being her swan song :(

Anyway. off topic.. sorry.

Oh I completely agree with you both. The most crushing thing about all of this is that we all sort of eventually accepted HC as a rare misstepn and could console ourselves with the notion that she would return with something up to her usual brilliant standard. It's the fact this could be two dubious albums in a row, that's making it so difficult to deal with.

But the single is doing OK and the album did quite well on pre-orders. How can she or her deluded fans realize what she's doing is REALLY not enough when the public seems to be buying it?

It's difficult to gauge right now what the public really think. A lead single by her is usually a guarnteed *smash*. GMAYL doing just 'ok' should be a big red flag. We'll know for sure 2-3 months after the album comes out I guess.

Download Derby: Katy Perry Leads Pack of Digital Debuts
February 17, 2012

By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Next week's Billboard Digital Songs and Hot 100 charts will be brimming with massive debuts, surging sales and some intriguing newcomers. A host of songs -- new and old -- will be vying for a position within both charts' top 10s.

Katy Perry's new "Part of Me," which was released digitally to retailers on Monday, Feb. 13, is heading for a debut sales week of around 400,000 to 420,000 downloads by week's end on Sunday, Feb. 19 -- so say industry prognosticators. That would mark the pop diva's best debut sales frame and the highest opening week for any act since Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold 448,000 on the chart dated Feb. 26, 2011, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Perry premiered "Part of Me" in a performance on the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards ceremony -- much like how Gaga launched "Born This Way" a year ago on the Feb. 13 Grammys (two days after the single hit digital retailers). So effectively, Perry's "Part of Me" will sell around the same amount in seven days as Gaga did in three.

Adele, who was the queen of this year's Grammy Awards -- taking home six trophies -- should also find herself with multiple singles near the top of the Digital Songs tally.

"Rolling in the Deep," which she performed on the show and earned both record and song of the year awards, could sell over 250,000 downloads. Meanwhile, her most recent single, "Set Fire to the Rain," may move around 220,000 while "Someone Like You" could sell 170,000.

The late Whitney Houston will likely be among next week's top 10 selling songs for a second week, as "I Will Always Love You" could sell in the range of 250,000 to 300,000.

fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) is still reeling from its positioning in Chevy's Sonic TV commercial, and is aiming for a 250,000 sales week.

Nicki Minaj's new "Starships" is on course to sell perhaps 150,000, while Chris Brown's also just-released "Turn Up the Music" is heading for a start near 150,000 to 170,000 as well. Another new single, from British vocal group One Direction, "What Makes You Beautiful," may debut with 120,000 or so.

The top 10 of the Digital Songs chart will be revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

I simply don't get why this woman is so insanely popular in the US. It's an ok song, but clearly second-rate. She's not particularly good looking. Her videos are hardly amazing. Her voice borders on unpleasant. Why is she so popular???

her lead single off a new studio album has most likely peak at the dizzying heights of number thirty-seven in the uk
it's BOMBED. nicola roberts fared better. kylie's third single off aphrodite fared better.

But that's because they didn't count the initial sales! It's doing great in Spain and Italy!

Katy Perry's 'Part of Me' Debuts Atop Hot 100
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | February 22, 2012

Following her appearance at the 54th Grammy Awards on Feb. 12, Perry, who performed "Part" in a medley with her former No. 1 "E.T.," engineers just the 20th No. 1 entrance in the Hot 100's 53-year history. Lady Gaga had last stormed in at the chart's top spot almost a year ago (Feb. 26, 2011) with "Born This Way," which also benefitted from Grammys exposure last year; "Born" reached retail and radio the Friday before last year's event, at which Gaga sang it.

"Part" marks the first start at the pinnacle for a single on the storied Capitol Records label. The song is Perry's seventh career Hot 100 No. 1.

After Capitol released it to radio and retail on Feb. 13, "Part," the lead single from Perry's "Teenage Dream" deluxe edition, "The Complete Confection" (due March 27), blasts in atop the Hot 100 and Digital Songs with 411,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, marking Perry's best career sales week. On Radio Songs, "Part" launches at No. 36 with 35 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS.

"Confection" picks up where the original version of "Dream" left off: producing a Hot 100 No. 1. Dream matched Michael Jackson's Bad (1987-88) by tallying five Hot 100 leaders, the most toppers from a single album over one release in the chart's archives.

After what happened with Gaga - where Madonna mashed up "Born This Way" with "Express Yourself" for her upcoming tour and has called Gaga "reductive" - are you scared of being too inspired by Madonna?

No. I'm inspired by everyone. And you know, I think that the queens love a little catfight every once in a while. It's good for the cocktails and the conversation, I'll tell you that.

On the Rihanna duet:

Obviously, we really want to do it and we want to do it in a big way,

On gay people:

I was set to think that gay people were an abomination, so I was not allowed to speak to anyone who was obviously fabulous and I was never allowed to associate with that type of people.

On her parents views of gay people:

Sometimes people have a really picky way of eating, right? And they don't like certain foods, but a lot of times they haven't even tried those foods. Once they try or know or get educated and have the facts, they're more comfortable and there's no judgment on your shrimp cocktail.

On being a lesbian:

I don't know if it would be appropriate for me to tell you what my straight or gay (experiences) have been in the past. (Laughs)

About having Madonna as a past influence:

Yes, and still continues to.

On her upcoming movie being to be the new "Truth or Dare":

A lot of times, people wanted me to be like someone else or sing like someone else or write like someone else. I wanted to be the first Katy Perry, but they couldn't accept that. So hopefully people can come away from (the film) saying, "I don't have to change myself. I don't have to fit in. I don't have to be what someone else wants me to be in order to reach my goals in life."

About fireworks coming out of her boobs in the video of the same name:

Those fireworks, they come from my spirit. (Laughs) But I know people love going straight to the tits.

Very amusing moment in the movie "Ted" that I saw earlier. Mark Wahlberg's character gets up onstage to sing a song to Mila Kunis. His singing is completely off-key and dire, and it cuts to Ted saying "Still better than Katy Perry".

lulz

Not like it isn't the truth. Unless Katy is sitting or standing stiff as a board she can't sing at all, and even then her range literally consists of just one actual note. The second she tries to go up in pitch it sounds like someone let the air out of a balloon.

Katy Perry is halfway through her third album, the follow-up to “Teenage Dream,” which spawned five Hot 100 No. 1 singles. She has yet to feel any pressure.

“When I put myself on a timeline, when I tell the record company when I want to release the album, that’s when the race starts,” Perry said during a session Thursday at ASCAP’s I Create Music Expo. “That’s when I put pressure on myself.”

So far she has collaborated with many of the producers and songwriters behind “Teenage Dream,” among them Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells.

Wells, she says, “allows me to vomit words. Not that I can’t find that with other but he just lets me [makes retching sound]. Max and Luke push me the most. As a team we have certain strengths. With Max, it’s melody choices, Luke is production and I’m topline and melody.”

She has also written new songs with Sia and continues to work with Bonnie McKee, her collaborator on "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream."

Working with Bonnie McKee "is like an emotional abuse session," she said. "Bonnie and I argue (like) we’re in the ring fighting for the best lyric. We presented ‘Teenage Dream’ three times (before it was recorded).”

At a recent session, Perry went in with a melody and verse to work with Greg Kurstin and McKee. “She came in from a yoga class and said, 'I want to write a song called 'Double Rainbow.'' So we have a song called ‘Double Rainbow.’”

Yey! Another Katy Perry album! Just what I need in my life? As much as another Tick Tock or a veruca.

What's a veruca? And to tie it into the thread, no matter how bad it is, it's still better than Katy Perry :basil:
