It's a cracking tune. That chorus is immense.
The chorus of Roar is actually literally 5 notes, with exactly two progressions (B♭–G–F, which gets reversed, and B♭–C–D–C–G–F).

Now, repetition is not a bad thing, the genius Dancing Queen is based on repetition. But I would reserve the word “immense” for something like Only Girl (In The World), which despite the repetitive pattern has both the variability and the range (an octave), and creates a towering effect in contrast with the verse. Now, Roar's chorus does sound better compared to the even more unimaginative verse, but is musically as interesting as California Gurls, if not less.
I hated Cal. Girls, but love this. Only fare criticism probably should be the too basic/'been there' verses, but the chorus is more than ok, imo. It has nods to some songs we've heard, but also kinda improves them and overall interesting.

You can break down many wonderful choruses in the same way...and yet they're still brilliant.

Slice it and dice it any way you like, but there's a reason why "Roar" is a massive worldwide hit and it isn't because people are obsessed with Katy Perry(they aren't), it's because it's a genuinely good song that millions of people love.

Deal with it.

I'm all for pop music slaying the charts, even if its not exactly my favorite song ever. Certainly better than that Avici or however you spell it crap. It's weird to see the Katy slaying the UK though, I always thought she was so American, it would be hard to cross over.

I don't see what's so hard to understand about an extremely catchy song selling well internationally. It was obvious to me on second listen that it was going to smash everywhere, regardless of my own personal opinion on Perry.

That Avicii thing is indeed DIRE.

Some people cannot or refuse to separate the personalty from the track. I love songs for the way they make me feel.

Nah ah! I never liked Miley for instance, but Party in the USA was SUCH a feel good song imo. I may dislike Katy, but the main problem is with the song itself imo.

Lol we're bitter about this :chuckle:

I just wish she'd go back to her older I Kissed a Girl style. That song was so... different from everything released at the time and she showed personality and attitude, even if it wasn't her idea. Hot 'N Cold was great. I can't get into this robotic nonsense she's been doing recently.

Why is it dire? :( The first song that joins country and EDM. Not too shabby in my universe.
If anything it's ways better than any Guetta track, and this comparison is dire.

Both DJs.

Saying something is better than Guetta is like saying something is better than cancer. OF COURSE IT IS.

It's fucking DIRE because it sounds like those godawful, utterly NAFF line dancing techno songs that were hits in the late 90s. Perhaps you think that kind of thing is cool. I don't.

Well, maybe but I can't think of any one similar song from the late 90s. It is really the first time country meets EDM, and the stucture of the song is VERY unusual. Ballad, then rave. It sounded quite fresh to my ears. Not very-very 'cool' but certainly not bad in any way. And he sings it very nicely.

Got your point :chuckle: you're probably right. And I watched the official video, and this is not him singing at all. And sound is yes, very uncool. Still it is better than the song you posted :)
