Here's some good news for sexually frustrated British guys. If you haven't gotten laid in over ten years, you can now give blood. Think of the free cookies and warm, fuzzy feeling you get from helping out your fellow citizens (no, it's not dizziness) as a consolation prize for your dry spell. The new policy reverses a decades-long protocol that banned all gay men from ever donating blood — a policy that still exists in the United States and Canada. According to England's Health Minister, Anne Milton, the old policy was overturned as a result of concerns that it breached discrimination and equality laws. The ban had been in effect because of fears regarding the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. While all blood is screened, some infections remain undetected because there is a lag in time before they show up in tests. Some still worry about the impact the new ten-year policy will have on public health. It supposedly will increase the risk for HIV in the blood supply by two percent. Others claim this is no cause for concern and that this fear simply proves that years after the height of the AIDS epidemic, there's still much stigma present within the gay community. Regardless, the desire for greater equality and inclusion sounds great on paper until you realize the percentage of gay men (or really any men) who've been sexually inactive for over ten years has got to be pretty slim, so it's doubtful they'll be an increase in blood donors. Though perhaps the new rule gives the notoriously celibate and sexually ambiguous Morrissey a chance to pass along his plasma? what a victory!

Let me play devil's advocate for a second: Say one of us was in hospital and needed a blood transfusion and we were told that we could choose between getting the blood of a sexually active heterosexual man or a sexually active homosexual man. I realise that's not a realistic scenario, but which would you be inclined to choose and why? |

Unicorn's blood, please. The only blood the Blood Service will be getting from me is the blood that pours from the new anus Henry Cavill has torn me. |

Heterosexual. Homosexuals have a higher incidence of contracting AIDS through anal sex. That's just a fact. I'm not going to leave out the fact that as a gay man, I know how many youths now bareback like it's no big deal. |

Indeed. Despite the fact that HIV rates are increasing all over the world. I believe the UK recently announced a huge increase in infections over the past decade. |

In this day and age, contracting HiV through a sexual act (other than rape) is almost unforgivable and completely idiotic. |

I remember I got bitched out at MN *big time* for saying this a few years ago. It was as if I strapped raw bloody meat to myself and then jumped in to a shark tank. All I said was I have no sympathy for people who contract HIV through anything other than rape, a faulty blood transfusion, or something of the like. If you whore it up, meaning you don't practice safe sex with someone you're not in a monogamous relationship with, it's your own damn fault if you contract the virus. (And even then you have to make sure they're HIV negative.) This isn't Africa where the Vatican has spent millions upon millions on teaching abstinence to uneducated people instead of safe sex. Everyone in the industrialized world should know better. They acted as though I had just tried to rape and murder everyone. But I guess that guys on a forum overrun by mincing rubbish gays like bedtimestorynyc would react that way. (He openly bragged about how many guys fuck him and the fact that he doesn't believe in condoms.) |

To be honest though, I think they should ask if you practice safe sex/practice monogamy instead of if you have an active sex life. I honestly don't think a guy like "The Situation" is any more dependable on being clean than your average homo. |
