I thought she have had a lot of hits. I mean didn't her songs use to be all over the place?

Christina Aguilera has played her first proper gig since giving birth nine months ago.

The singer performed at the Africa Rising concert on Tuesday, held at London's Royal Albert Hall, alongside Seal and a selection of African bands.

She told Newsbeat she was happy to get back to it: "Mama has to work, mama has to get the job done so you know I'm still who I am."

Aguilera and her husband's first child, Max, was born in January.

"It's important I think, as a mother, not to lose your own identity," she said. "[And] also to share that with my son and show him what Mommy does beside change his diapers and breastfeed him."

I can't believe it's a decade already, I feel really really blessed to have accomplished that in my life
Christina Aguilera on her 10 years in the music business

The concert marked the first time Aguilera's been on the red carpet since she went on maternity leave.

However, the singer seemed to enjoy it, saying: "It's cold here but I like the cold weather, but yes, it's great to be back in the swing of things again."

She wore a brightly patterned Pucci top with her trademark bright lips - this time in pink to match her top.

Africa rocks

The Africa Rising concert in London was the finale of a number of events which have taken place all over the world.

The idea is to raise awareness of African issues through the events which, like Fashion Rocks, mix fashion and music.

The event was hosted by 1Xtra DJ Trevor Nelson. There were performances from several popular African bands, including Youssou N'Dour and Olu Maintain.

Models also strutted the catwalk in clothes designed by some of Africa's biggest talents.

Aguilera said she was honoured to be asked to perform: "I think it's a great cause and I'm here in support of all the talent that comes out of Africa and to be in support of the good that comes [out] of Africa, rather than always hearing sort of negative things about the country."

Seal also took to the stage to perform, saying: "Whenever there's an event like this, obviously, being of Nigerian descent, it's a calling one has to answer."

Former US Secretary of State General Colin Powell then addressed the crowd, explaining how he believes Africa will rise and become a powerful and prosperous continent.

Later, Nigerian band Olu Maintain dragged General Colin Powell on stage and taught him a few dance moves.

Aguilera turned up at the show in a bright top by designer Pucci

Aguilera was the biggest hit of the evening, however. Banners sprang up from the crowd when she came on, and fans screamed out "I love you" at every possible interlude.

She kicked her set off with Ain't No Other Man, looking every inch the superstar in a bright white suit and heels.

However, despite only singing six songs, she managed to change outfits three times.

Aguilera strutted out in a leopard print leotard for Moulin Rouge, perhaps to show she's got her pre-baby figure back.

She later admitted that getting back in shape had been difficult.

The set ended with the singer, in a black lycra catsuit, energetically performing Fighter.

Fourth album plans

The 27-year-old is releasing her greatest hits, Keeps Getting Better, next month, celebrating ten years in music.

She says there's plenty more left, though: "I can't believe it's a decade already, I feel really really blessed to have accomplished that in my life."

The singer also managed to tactfully dodge a question about Britney Spears' comeback, saying: "I'm excited, it's an exciting time for music, there's lots of great new albums coming out and I'm glad to be a part of that."

Aguilera is currently working on her fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2006's Back to Basics.

I'm surprised she didn't cobble up some career retrospective 4 disc box set for her 10 anniversary.

Horrible. She looks like a tranny.

Speaking of Craguilera, I just *love* how she thinks she's a legend despite being in the public eye for about ten years.

Oh XXXXtina - you're so GRITTY and RAW
