Like, ALL OF THEM. Live To Tell, Oh father, Playground to mention the top ones. All of them are majestic and not nearly as formulaic and self-affirmation-via-Disney generic like Beautiful is. I am Beautiful no matter what they say, words can't bring me down. Could one possibly put it more bluntly and flatly? I will write a song about what I had for dinner next. |

The following Mallads (Madonna ballads ) shit on Beautiful:Crazy For You Live To Tell The Look of Love Spanish Eyes Oh Father Secret Garden I'll Remember Take A Bow Sanctuary Forbidden Love I Want You You'll See Frozen The Power of Goodbye Paradise (Not For Me) Easy Ride The Devil Wouldn't recognize You Falling Free And yes, a few of those aren't actually ballads, but you get my drift. All of them are musically and melodically superior to Beautiful and most are lyrically superior. I'd even say several are vocally superior to Xtina's howler monkey impression. |

![]() "Crazy for You" forgettable? It's literally one of the Top 3 Recurrent Madonna tracks at US radio (let alone internationally) 27 years after its release. Don't even TRY and say you don't remember what it sounds like, it's literally one of her signature hits. "I Want You" is one of the best cover songs ever, to the point it has gotten mentions on lists and in articles from music critics that normally wouldn't even piss on Madonna if she were on fire. |

Totally agree. M's ballads are by and large, gorgeous and heartfelt. There's more soul in her ballads than most other artists. They're in a completely different league to the generic ballads offered by the big-lunged divas(enjoyable though they may be). |

A big voice can be an artistic detriment. The music of "vocal" (Traditional Pop AND RnB/Pop) acts is all about vocal acrobatics, not the MUSIC itself. Celine Dion is a better singer (from a technical perspective) than Madonna, but only clueless conservative suburban housewives would say she has the better catalog. Same thing with comparing Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson or Johnny Mathis and Jimi Hendrix. Vocal artists are at the bottom of the musical barrel in my opinion, right next to all the by-the-numbers rappers. |

Alright, I do remember Crazy For You, but that don't mean I like it. When I think of a good M ballad I think of Frozen or Easy Ride. The Power of Goodbye, on the other hand, is totally generic. Saying mellow stuff like Oh Father us better than Beautiful is beyond me. And I'm not claiming it's Christina's voice that makes it better. Britney isn't known for her vocal strength, yet I think her voice is perfect for the kinds of songs she does (like Toxic or OIDIA). Edited by Vancho, Oct 24 2012, 03:14 AM.

Does it make me a bad person that I like Dirrrrrrrrrrrty era XTINA best? There are a handful of songs if hers I like from across her career but on the whole I'm a bit unmoved by her either way. She has some fabulous videos though - beautiful, fighter and dirrty are all great. And Your Body of course haha

I have to agree it's a fair comparison. I like both songs but they do have a *lot* in common. Just as much, if not more than BTW and EY I would say. The video was quite unusual / controversial at the time as far as I recall too.. |

Really? Is it that hard to grasp? Louder or more uptempo doesn't mean better. That's like saying Michael Bay's movies are better than Kubrick's or Hitchcock's because they have more loud noises and pretty explosions. There's a beautiful subtlety to songs like "Oh Father" that a tacky, over-the-top screamer like Christina will never understand or be able to replicate, she's not talented enough. It's real artistry, not attempting to make vocal histrionics compensate for the lack of everything else in a song. "Oh Father" is lyrically, musically, melodically and even vocally superior to "Beautiful" as Madonna understood vocal emotion and vocal melody. Christina merely made "Beautiful" another opportunity to bellow her way through a song and many of the lyrics are as cliched as any of the more dubious examples Madonna has written in the last decade. |

Gaga said she consciously let go of the metaphors and decided to be quite literal with the lyrics of BTW in an attempt to bring the point home as strongly as possible. |
