"Oh Father" is a song for grown-ups. "Beautiful" is a song for...other people.
And Born This Way is for... ?

I'm sorry, but this discussion is so funny :chuckle:

But mainly I came here to post this:

quite a work of art :drama:

too bad youtube didn't exist back in 1989 or else there'd also be a gay video version of oh daddy filmed and floating all over the web. such a lost opportunity, really.

Uh...Oh Father is also vastly superior to Born This Way. Never would I suggest otherwise.

I'm glad you find the discussion funny though. We also find your posts amusing too, for all the wrong reasons.

Christina fans turning in their fan card:

Here's my final thoughts on Christina. Christina says she has nothing to prove, but the producers and the writers say I want to be a popstar again. I think that's what frustrates people the most. I've always considered her this alternative to Pop like Kanye is the alternative to Hip Hop, but this album is screaming mainstream. She needs to figure it out, because it's not fair to the fans. If she is over the pop thing, then be the R&B/Soul artist you want to be. At this rate I won't be able to see her on tour again unless I become a billionaire.

I am not the one to say she owes us more than the music, but she can at least release 4 singles with videos, go on tour this era and be a lot more driven. She has the talent, but lots of people do that never get an ounce of fame. The fans get taken for granted, because we are the ones giving artists these lavish lives by buying their music, seeing them on tour, etc. which leads to great endorsement deals and contracts for them.

I've never felt so neglected and underappreciated by her and I've been riding with her since 1998. I'm finding it harder and harder to be optimistic about her. It just hurts to invest so much time and money into a person who doesn't a give a damn because you already set them for life. It's unacceptable that she gave up only 7 years into her career.

Mariah, Michael, Stevie, Prince, Whitney, Janet and Madonna all gave us 15 or more years of drive and passion. She hasn't had an ounce of drive since 2007 and she's completely sane. I always understood her family and friends were most important to her as should be because that's all you have when the fame is gone, but I just wanted her to give a bit more to her fans. She still has a lot to prove to be a legend and it's a shame because she was on the right path.

To wrap it up, I don't like the stan I've become in regards to her. I've always been the optimistic one, but I can no longer play that game. I think it's best to move on before I become someone who despises her in every thread for years. I will continue to support her by buying her music, but I can no longer be that involved in helping getting her music played and so on. I love you all dearly and wish you well. I've had some great laughs and heartfelt conversations with some of you. Christina is an amazing artist, entertainer and one of the best voices of all-time, but I am retiring my stan card. My motto is you get what you give and Christina hasn't proven that she deserves a diehard stan like me in years.

Love & Lotus

Guys, it's called having an opinion; everyone is entitled to one. Why is it SO HARD for some people to understand?
I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they're usually full of shit."

FACTS have to come in to play eventually, and the fact of the matter is "Beautiful" is a by-the-numbers commercial success-baiting ballad while nothing like "Oh Father" has ever been a smash at mainstream radio. It was a risk to release it as a single and that was proven to be true when it broke Madonna's record streak of 17 consecutive Hot 100 Top 10 singles.

The song being far more musically and melodically interesting is also not a matter of opinion.
Actually none of those are facts. Even if someone says that Britney's Autumn Goodbye is better than Oh Father, there is no factual evidence that states the contrary :)

We can at most use critics' opinions as some kind of measure, but that's about it.

From Digital Spy:

Christina Aguilera's new album 'Lotus': First listen

She's released one of our favourite pop singles of the year with 'Your Body', so here at Digital Spy, we were mightily excited when we were invited to hear the singer's upcoming album Lotus in full at her record label.

Ahead of the LP's official release on November 12, we've posted our thoughts on the record - track by track, of course - below:

1. Lotus Intro
Don't be fooled by the title, this is in fact a full song. Choirs chant over a flurry of electronics as Christina repeats: "This is the beginning" over a heavy, hip-hoppy beat. "To the sky I rise/ Spread my wings and fly" she continues, before running off her spiel about how a lotus is "the unbreakable flower".

2. Army Of Me
Best described as 'Fighter' Pt II. "Now that I'm wiser/ Now that I'm stronger/ Now that I'm a fighter/ There's a thousand faces on me" she sings over a thumping midtempo beat, before belting "We're gonna rise up for every time you broke me" on the chorus. It's nothing we haven't heard from her before, but there's an urgency to it that suggests Christina needed to get it out of her system.

3. Red Hot Kinda Love
A smoky, sultry number with subtle hints of her Latino roots. It's built around the hook: "Baby I'm burning up/ You've got that red hot kinda love." It's relatively care-free for a Christina song in that it's less about big vocals and more about being a bit cheeky.

4. Make The World Move ft. Cee Lo Green
"The time is now/ No time to wait/ Turn up the love/ Turn down the hate," she sings over bonkers arrangement of horn blasts and plinky synths. We'll be honest, this one didn't do much for us.

5. Your Body
Most of you will be familiar with this song by now and be aware that it is in fact very good indeed.

6. Let There Be Love
Essentially a massive clubby raveathon that is ultimately throwaway, but in the best possible way. "Let there be let there be love/ Here in the here in the club" she roars over a wall of trance beats. On first listen this was our favourite of the lot, but given its immediacy will probably end up somewhere around the middle a few months down the line.

7. Sing For Me
We were initially impressed by this ballad purely because she'd managed to hold it off for a full six songs. "I don't care what the world thinks or how I sound," she insists as she shakes off her insecurities. There's lots of words like "destiny" and phrases like "there's no place to hide", which should give you an indication of what we're dealing with here.

8. Blank Page
Another ballad, but a much, much better one. "I know this hurt, I know this pain/ But people change/ Lord knows I've been no saint," she opens with on what is a startlingly honest confessional. "I am a blank page/ Waiting for you to bring me to life," she sings on the chorus. It's basically Christina saying that she's messed some things up in the past and would quite like to start again if that's okay with everyone.

9. Cease Fire
One of the moodier tracks on the record that, fittingly, is set to rumbling bass and a militant marching beat. It includes the rather brilliant line: "I'm tired of fighting for peace/ When I'm alone on this front line" and - as the title suggests - is a plea to her other half to stop the fighting for the greater good.

10. Around The World
We didn't write much down about this track other than that it's her attempt at a party anthem and includes the lyric "international love". Our favourite part was the nod to her Lady Marmalade moment from yesteryear, as she whispers: "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?"

11. Circles
Another one of our immediate favourites. "Spin around in circles on my middle middle finger" she quips on the rawky chorus over a playground melody. The best lyric is: "Why you always trying to get up in my mixture?/ I think you're just bitter" before sounding off a giant "motherf**ker" at the end.

12. Best Of Me
The third and final ballad on the album is a grand, 'Beautiful'-esque affair that even includes the familiar line: "I won't let you bring me down." It also features a lovely spoken-word middle eight that only Christina knows how.

13. Just A Fool ft. Blake Shelton
A soft, country-pop closer that looks obligatory on paper but fortunately isn't so bad in reality. Like most country songs, it's packed with melancholy and includes a sing-songy chorus of: "I had my heart set on you/ Nothing else hurts like you do." Truth be told, we suspect there's a good reason why this has been saved for the back-end of the album.

In short...
Lotus is, like all Christina albums, very different from her others. We think that's a good thing, but it won't be for those that prefer the pick 'n' mix style of Stripped or even Bionic. There are a handful of great tracks to be found here, but this record is very much a pop album, in that most of the songs sound like they've been created with the mindset that they could be a potential single somewhere down the line. And given the precarious position she's in at the moment, this is probably the sort of album she should be releasing right now.
