Members of Sugababes have begun a legal battle over ownership of the pop group's name after former member Mutya Buena applied to own the trademark. Buena, a founding member of the group, applied to the European Union trademarks authority in November 2009. Now the current line-up - Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen - have filed a notice of opposition, as have their record company, Island Records. Range has previously told the BBC that their record company owns the name. An Island Records spokesman said: "Contractually we are entitled to the use of the name Sugababes in connection with records and films. We are just protecting that right." But when the last original member, Kiesha Buchanan, left last year, Buena commented: "It just means the Sugababes have ended." Bands who changed their names Continue reading the main story In a letter to the EU body, Universal's Island Records said that because of the "similarity of the goods and services" provided by the applicant - Buena - "there is a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public". Buena is currently working on her second solo album, following the release of her debut Real Girl in 2007. If her application is successful, it could mean that she will own the rights to use the Sugababes name on goods such as CDs, DVDs and books. The Sugababes line-up has changed several times since the original group was formed in 1998 by founding members Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan. Donaghy left in 2001, with Range replacing her. Buena left the band and was subsequently replaced by Berrabah. And last year, it was confirmed that the last original Sugababe, Buchanan, was leaving the group - she was then replaced by former Eurovision contestant Ewen. The Sugababes have enjoyed several UK number one singles, including Freak Like Me and Push the Button. Their latest album, Sweet 7, debuted and peaked at number 14 on the UK chart, making it the group's lowest charting album since 2000's One Touch. The Sugababes are currently recording the group's eighth studio album. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10125165.stm |

Christ, I am so fucking bored of this entire malarkey already. The public voted with their purses and knocked back the new 'Babes - they couldn't be any less "cool". Surely that is the best revenge for Mutley and cohorts rather than some tawdry trawl through the courts. |

I think it's safe to say that Popjustice doesn't like the new single...Let's be absolutely clear on this. The new Sugababes single, 'Freedom', is no good. We need to be completely unambiguous about this. It is a bad song. The vocal performance is just about perfunctory - it still sounds like Sugababes, in the sense that a miserable fart in the bath 'sounds like' a thunderstorm - and the bit where it gets 'exciting' (see clip below) is kitchensinkified enough to catch one's attention. But it's not good enough. It's good enough to put on a Nokia advert, yes, but it's certainly not good enough to have the Sugababes name on it. People seem to take a surprising amount of glee in giving the Sugababes a kicking. The shouting and pointing has been going on for ages, but it's worse now. Maybe it's because the band's music is worse now. Maybe the band's members could be replaced every eight hours and nobody would really care if the music was good. Either way, the hecklers think it's funny that a once great pop group is on its knees. To most people the band is now a joke. We don't think it's very funny. We take no pleasure in seeing one of our favourite pop groups of the last eleven years (in fact, they were Britain's best girlband at various points for almost a decade) in its death throes. As we just posted on the Popjustice forum in a thread dedicated to the band's ongoing struggle, "there is nothing [we] would like more than for the 'Sugababes' to have an amazing single, to show everyone that they're worthy of continuing the band's name, to shut up the sniggering critics, to do justice to the support they get from their fans, to turn in a great and sophisticated twist on modern pop. That's what we all want, isn't it? [We'd] even put up with a great and unsophisticated twist on modern pop." 'Freedom' is not that. It's none of that. It's none of anything. It's just loads of nothing. It's the sound of the end. Read more: http://www.popjustice.com/#ixzz1O74oEJRv |

Sugababes sign three-album deal with Sony The Sugababes have reportedly signed a new three-album deal with Sony. The band, currently comprising Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen, moved to the record company from their old label Universal. A source told the Sunday Mirror: "The Suga*babes are far from over. Sony are very excited about the new material and are putting a lot of money into the new *album. "[New single] 'Freedom' has been picked as the theme tune for a Nokia campaign too. There's even talk about them going to the States with this record too." The Sugababes recently revealed that they will be playing the Chester Rocks music festival on Saturday July 2. |

They have now CANCELLED their ghastly comeback single 'Freedom', after it became apparent that it was going to flop spectacularly. It was due out in just a few days time, but has been withdrawn from pre-order sites and they're now going to give it away for free on Amazon instead. This really is just too much.

it's time for another member departure/replacement. surely they must have realised they can at least remain entertaining with such antics, cause music careerwise they've been declared dead and buried for quite a while now. |
