Radio 'Touches' Mariah This congratulatory message from All Access to Island Def Jam appears on the site's Net News! MEDIABASE and ALL ACCESS send out congratulations to STEVE BARTELS, ERIK OLESEN, BENNY POUGH, SHARON LEPERE, RICK SACKHEIM and the entire ISLAND DEF JAM MUSIC GROUP team as MARIAH CAREY grabs a record 223 monitored adds this week for her new single "Touch My Body." The previous record was held by INTERSCOPE's MAROON 5 with 177 in APRIL, 2007 with "Makes Me Wonder." |

Well just take a look at what you wrote! Seriously! Even coming from you, that's pretty fucked up, dear! |

Excuse me? What exactly is your fucking problem with what I said? And before you reply, just ask yourself if you really want to do down this particular route. If you don't like her, then why not go and post in another thread? |

I do like her. I think she's made some very good songs but labeling her a "true songwriter" is putting her in the same league as The Beatles, David Bowie and even Madonna. And I really don't think she's up there. And she never will be. |

Those songs she sings didn't write themselves. Many of them are very clever, deceptively simple, catchy songs. To turn your nose up at them and her abilities is a bit lame and tired. People just laugh at her all the time, cos it's the easy thing to do. By the way, it's very amusing to see you suddenly use The Beatles as an example of great songwriting. Ironic, yes?

I used them because of their status as great songwriters, something I don't necessarily agree with. She may be able to write a catchy ballad but then what else can she do? She's been doing those for nearly 20 years now. To me, a "true songwriter" would show more diversity and use more instruments, lyrical themes and so on. But no. |

I'm not saying she's the greatest songwriter of all time. Nowhere did I say that. I just think you and others of your ilk are very adept at underestimating her ability to write very good pop songs. And you'll bitch at me for bringing this up, but why on EARTH do you give Carey such a hard time, whilst simultaneously worshipping the recording career of Paris Hilton. you do see my point, don't you? |

I'm not giving her a hard time. I just don't think she deserves THAT much credit as a songwriter. I admit I was surprised to see that she actually DID write her own songs, but it's not like she's written them all alone or anything. I'm just saying that she isn't exactly expanding her horizons or changing anything up. And, as Gimme has already said, she has been writing the same song for 18 years now. I never said Paris was a great songwriter. |

And Madonna has written all of her songs alone too, has she? As for Gimme's ridiculous statement that Carey has been writing the same song for the past 18 years, well I think most of us are agreed that that's a complete load of nonsense. Her first few albums sound *nothing* like her last few. Even a cursory listen proves that. |

Compare Hero to Anytime You Need A Friend to One Sweet Day to Always Be My Baby to My All to Butterfly to Can't Take That Away to Through The Rain to We Belong Together to Touch My Body. There's hardly a difference. |

You could cherrypick songs from Madonna's career too and imply that she hasn't changed much either. And by the way, why does an arists *have* to sound different anyway? Did Prince change his sound over the course of his career? Nope. Did Billie Holiday? No. Did Frank Sinatra? No. Did Elvis Presley? No. It's not ALL about sounding different and revamping your songs. We love that about Madonna, but it's not for every artist. To think that's what music is all about is to completely and utterly miss the point. |

I didn't cherrypick. I chose her most succesful singles. No, she doesn't HAVE to sound different. I'm just saying that it's the same fucking song. |

Utter bullshit. They are NOT the same song. By the same token, Sheryl Crow has been making the same song since 1993. Get a fucking grip. You're being intentionally ignorant and quite frankly, you're better than that. |
