Unregulated fur farms are horrific - possibly regulated ones too - and are grotesque / possibly evil. 'Regulated' meat farms (e.g. battery chickens , beef cows so muscular their legs break) are horrific and widespread and everyone who buys meat at supermarkets contributes to enormous suffering of animals. I buy meat in a supermarket so I cant complain about fur wearers. (i dont need to buy meat in a supermarket to survive, I have 1000s of other options - beans, tofu, quorn, fish etc etc). |

Humans need protein. That's just a fact. That's survival. You don't need fur. People who are sick and need to build up their strength are always told to eat protein. Food is essential. Fur is not. We have an alternative. Nothing contains more protein than meat. When it comes to leather, every part of the cow is used. It's not a waste. When's the last time you ate mink, or fox? These furs are used for vanity. It's unnecessary, and barbaric. Leave animals alone. We don't need a conveyor belt for corporate fashion, shit that's going to be thrown away the instant something new comes along: fur clad watches. |

People need protein - doesn't have to be beef or pork or chicken I dont like fur - at the same time I would have no problem eating a mink or a fox if it was killed humanely (or a dog or cat). However I eat steak and ham - and probably the killing of the creature was 'regulated' but there is a high chance it didn't die in a pleasant or humane way. |

You will never get the same amount of protein from another source as you would with meat. Meat = food Secondly, you missed the point. You don't eat mink or fox. The majority don't. That = a waste of a perfectly good animal. You are not going to die without fur. The rate of animals being abused in the fur trade, is much higher than those slaughtered in regulated animal farms. That's just a fact. |

hmmm - i disagree - in fact i think this is impossible given the scale of the farming industry compared to the fur trade... |

It was partly researching what constitutes as humane or free range that turned me vegan. It's not either or though. Of course I don't agree with the fur trade but I also don't think the meat industry is as 'humane' as people alow themselves to think. It's just easier to draw the line in the sand at more obviously extreme things rather than the insidious invisible ones. |

Really weak argument. The animals involved were NOT killed for her to wear. The meat was bought and paid for from a butcher. And it was very much a one-off. You don't see her wandering around in real furs. |

Its exactly the same as wearing fur - even if it is only a one off... If wearing fur is vile - then the meat dress was an abomination |

I wouldn't wear it personally but I also won't buy leather (i say buy because i have a pair of leather boots i still wear that i bought way back) or eat meat. I try not to judge other people on these standards though because I'd be left with a pretty small pool of people to talk to ![]() I think Janet's fur line is kind of extravagantly in your face dickish though

Yet AGAIN, you COMPLETELY and SPECTACULARLY miss the point. The animals that Janet Jackson wears were KILLED precisely for her to wear. The animals that GaGa wore were killed to be EATEN. She merely happened to make a one-off costume from their flesh instead of eating them. They are ENTIRELY different things. |

I do try to be less and less judgemental, but I draw the line at people like her. What she's doing is abhorrent. I also think it's ok to judge people sometimes, when their actions are so vile. |

I'd also say there is a difference between *wearing* fur and owning a fur line. My husband who is now also a vegan has a vintage rabbit fur coat that he still wears because what's the point in throwing out out? I'm not saying that's the same as the meat dress but you know, she doesn't have a meat line ![]() Yet

Any one wear leather? Leather While many people think it is cruel to kill animals for their fur, leather remains a popular consumer item, even though both products require the killing of animals. Most consumers mistakenly assume that leather is merely a by-product of the meat industry, and that buying leather clothing does not increase the number of animals slaughtered. However, this belief ignores the economic interdependence of factory farming and the leather trade. In reality, leather is a co-product of the meat industry, generating significant profits for both factory farms and the leather trade itself. In fact, without the lucrative sale of animal skins for leather, factory farms would not even be able to turn a profit by selling meat alone. Ultimately, buying leather products subsidizes factory farms while providing financial incentive for them to produce more leather. Where Leather Comes From Most leather comes from cattle who are slaughtered for meat, worn-out dairy cows who no longer produce enough milk to be profitable, and veal calves whose soft skin is particularly valuable. Each of these animals suffers a lifetime of cruel confinement and is ultimately harvested for their milk and/or flesh. They also suffer from overcrowding, weather extremes, and lack of food and water on the long trip to the slaughterhouse, with many dying on the way. Much of the leather purchased in the U.S. is imported from India and China, where conditions for animals are particularly cruel and the cows are so malnourished that they yield little if any meat. Old and sick cows are often forced to march long distances, then crammed tightly into illegal transport trucks that take them to the slaughterhouse. Upon arrival, handlers beat and torture weak and injured cows to force them to walk to the killing floor, then slit their throats while they are still fully conscious. Most clothing labels only specify where the product was finished, not where the leather came from, so if you purchase leather you may be supporting this extreme animal cruelty without even knowing it. Other animals used to make leather include horses, sheep, lambs, goats and pigs who are raised and slaughtered for meat, as well as kangaroos, elephants, and sharks who are hunted specifically for their skins. In some countries, even dogs and cats are killed for their skins, yet because the products are deliberately mislabeled, consumers around the world unknowingly buy leather made from former companion animals. |
