Oh I have no doubt whatsoever that "critics" will adore it.

In no way does that alter the fact that it is a *dreadful* album. Breathtakingly banal and forgettable. Easily her worst album(and that's really saying something), and the worst album release by a major female artist in living memory.

Let's see how it fares in the long run, when people realise just how appalling it is. Once the surprise of the stunt has worn off, I'd be shocked if it continued to sell.

Actually, this album is so clearly dreadful and devoid of a single memorable song, I'm wondering if the label refused to market and promote it, so she went ahead and released it on iTunes with zero fanfare.

I really couldn't disagree more. And I can see if some may not like it, but to dismiss it as the worst album in a living memory, c'mon :lol2:

Well I said it's the worst album by a major female artist in living memory, and I stand by that. When an album doesn't have a SINGLE memorable tune, what else could I say? It is DIRE. It makes PRISM look like the work of a songwriting genius in comparison.

Imagine if Gaga has released this tuneless tripe? She would be DESTROYED by critics and fans alike. But because the new hipster-wannabe Beyonce releases it by surprise, everyone adores it. Beyonce has the Pitchfork act-it's-cool-to-like-now seal of approval, so how on earth could we slate her album? It's beyond "emperor's new clothes".

Yes she was always loved by the hipsters, pitchfork etc. But I really think she deserves it this time. Well for 4 to, took me ages to appriciate that album, but it's really one of the strongest female releases of the decade. I really can't imagine Gaga going for this sound... Or doing this video album thing. She's editing a video for a month now. And it will most likely be a very simple video of a rapper humping her to a white background (maybe from behind, for the reversed warholian thingie). Imagine if she was editing 17 videos...

I find the idea that "4" turned into some wonderful album, utterly hilarious. The only difference with 4 was that instead of the usual 3 cracking songs and 12 fillers, it was an album full of mediocre songs. Nothing awful, but crucially, nothing as strong as her best stuff either. It's a profoundly mediocre album.

This on the other hand, is stinker after stinker.

Look, I care about melody. Actual music. If that's not what some people are after, that's cool. I'll stick with artists who actually deliver musically.

What "sound" is that? The same generic urban sound that's been around for over a decade? Or the faux hipster sound that Solange has been trying and failing to peddle for years?

Theses bitches don't seem to understand that you have to write MELODIES. All of the other pop bitches know that, from Madonna to Gaga, to Katy Perry to Rihanna(for the most part).

But then as Bulgar says, all some people look for is stylish photoshoots and endoresments from hip websites, and they're happy to gush about an album, despite its profound lack of quality.

as most of u have already noted, what a genius move. marketing wise she - well, not really she, morelike her husband- has completely changed the game about future big releases

this

the album is quite probably the set of songs she handed to her label earlier in the year, which they denied to release and asked her to go back recording it from scratch. what's genius about this whole thing is that it's a win win situation for her. if this turns to a surprise hit, it will get a physical release and be promoted accordingly. if it underperforms, everyone will pretend it was just a buzz album and wait for the proper one to emerge.

I really loved how she released the album. However it isn't game changing because if everyone follows suit, it will not be as successful and wear out over time. It is gimmicky/trendy. Game changing has to be more than that.

I always thought that a major artist should do this for original promo/fun purposes. I think I may have posted here that M should release an album unannounced and have a secret agent theme, just showing up unannounced everywhere for promo. :) It's just smart given the over saturation of big names lately.

I like Haunted a lot and it's funny that the video has some Madonna/Gaga references, heavy on the former. I see Hollywood, Justify My Love, The MDNA Tour, and The Punk Met Gala look, and regarding Gaga I see Paparazzi. Plus it was directed by Jonas A so it's easily one of my favorite new song/video combos.

As far as the bulk of the album, it's on par with Justin T's - brilliant production, a lot of slow/mid tempo, "atmospheric elements."

Good for her!

Absolutely. I really cannot fault the strategy in any way!

Alas, I can't hum a strategy in the shower.

Haven't heard the album yet. With Beyoncé I always expect a snoozefest with a few good songs here and there though.

Ugh. I liked some of 4, but most of it is outrageously overrated. If any of the other bitches recorded such weak-tuned affairs, we would DRAG their sorry asses for filth, so why should Beyonce get away with it? Because she can dance well?

I'm gonna say this too. Her voice. It's technically excellent, but it has NO soul. It's even addressed in the "Dreamgirls" movie. Her voice is passed over for Jennifer Hudson's. Quite rightly too. Bey's voice is very good, but it has nowhere near enough character to sell a song that isn't actually all that great. Other artist's with truly unique voices can sell songs. She can only sell dodgy songs through the incendiary dance performances.

that's quite genius, too
(as in, look, she's bold and making a statement or, oh look, this is not the proper blockbuster album that's yet to be unveiled)

That's what I was expecting too. I've always enjoyed at least some of every album. Alas, this time there aren't ANY good songs. Not even close.
