Muse announce new single 'Madness', delay new album release

Muse have confirmed plans for their new single.

The band will release 'Madness' as the first official single from their upcoming album The 2nd Law later today (August 20).

The song will be available to download across the world following the track's UK radio premiere.

Muse have also confirmed that they have delayed the release of their new album by two weeks.

The 2nd Law was originally scheduled to be released on September 17 in the UK and a day later in the US, but will now be available on October 1.

The record will be followed by a European headline tour, which includes five dates in the UK from October 24.

album cover

The album's cover art, taken from the Human Connectome Project, represents the map of the human brain's pathways, "tracking the circuits in our heads and how we process information with bright, neon colors."

more info on the new album:

According to the band in a track-by-track description of the album in NME, the album incorporates elements of symphonic rock, dubstep and synth pop. :drama:

"Madness", according to NME, features influences which draw from Queen's "I Want to Break Free" and David Bowie's Scary Monsters and Super Creeps album.

Frontman Matt Bellamy has stated that dubstep producer Skrillex was an influence when writing the final two tracks on the album - "The 2nd Law: Unsustainable" and "The 2nd Law: Isolated System".

He also stated that the song "Follow Me" was written about his newborn son, Bingham Bellamy.

"Panic Station" features musicians who performed on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and the song will include funk rock influences.

Opening track "Supremacy" will feature Led Zeppelin-esque guitar riffs as well as strings and will not focus on a particular structure, being more based in progressive rock.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme wrote two songs for the album - "Save Me" and "Liquid State" - about his battle with alcoholism, with him providing lead vocals on both tracks.

In a recent interview Muse reported Nero is helping on the track "Follow Me".

The only song I don't like is "Liquid State". It doesn't even sound like Muse. It's like some naff Foo Fighters-esque band, which Muse are head and shoulders above. Matt doesn't sing it. I can't stand when bands do that, especially when the usual vocalist has an incredible voice like his. It used to piss me off when songs sung by other band members started popping up on albums by Travis years ago. It isn't Matt singing "Save Me" either, but at least that song is better. I really hope they don't let other members start singing more and more.
